CPI State Secretary K. Ramakrishna on Sunday alleged that Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy was trying to rescue MLC Ananta Satya Udaya Bhaskar in the murder case of a 29-year-old youth in Kakinada. On May 19, Udaya Bhaskar had delivered the lifeless body of a Dalit youth, Veedhi Subramanyam, in his car allegedly after the murder. The victim was MLC’s former driver. Udaya Bhaskar was later arrested in the case and is now in judicial remand in the Rajamahendravaram Central Jail. “It is clear that the Chief Minister is attempting to come to the rescue of Udaya Bhaskar. The State police did not file a chargesheet till date only to enable the accused to get the bail. The Chief Minister must speak on the action taken against the MLC,” said Mr. Ramakrishna. … [Read more...] about CM trying to shield MLC in Dalit youth murder case, alleges CPI

Ute Mountain Ute tribe confronts rising youth suicide rates with new mental health center
TOWAOC — The night she lost her teenage cousin to suicide, a boy she considered her brother, Cheyenne Hayes thought her mind was going crazy. As the Ute Mountain Ute tribal community mourned the deaths of two middle school boys — Andrew William Cuch Jr., 14, and Jeit Redrock Height, 15 — on the same January night, Hayes and her friends grieved. She could hear her friends’ pain as they spoke about their own lives. Hayes found her own mind traveling down a similarly dark road. “I told myself I couldn’t go down the same path my brother went down,” Hayes said. “Because that wouldn’t solve anything.” But as the 17-year-old counseled her struggling friends, she scoffed at the idea of seeing a therapist. Most of her friends felt the same way. And the few who did seek help said the professional didn’t understand what they were going through. “I already know what to do on my own,” Hayes said. Republicans blame us for violent crime—while blocking our efforts to fight it | Opinion
America is in the throes of a gun violence epidemic that is driving an increase in violent crime. Horrific acts of violence have permeated every part of our daily lives. We can't go to a concert , a nightclub , a mall , the gym , to schools , celebrate the 4th of July or Pride without fear of a shooting. And as soon as we begin to come to grips with one shooting, another happens. We are four Democratic mayors in red and purple states and we can tell you that contrary to the narrative on the Right, gun violence is not confined to liberal states on America's coasts; it is a national epidemic that requires immediate, national action. While mass shootings capture the headlines and flood our phones with push alerts, as mayors, we know those are only a small fraction of the acts of gun violence that shatter our communities every day. We have attended the funerals and heard the stories of families destroyed because the wrong person had access to a deadly firearm. As … [Read more...] about Republicans blame us for violent crime—while blocking our efforts to fight it | Opinion
Biden’s cancer research reduction act | Opinion
Tom Whitehead continually marvels at the life-saving power of CAR T-cell gene therapy, which rescued his daughter Emily from pediatric leukemia. "To look at her every day and see what a cure for cancer actually looks like––it's pretty amazing," he says. CAR T-cell therapy is a revolutionary treatment, years in the making. It's no surprise it was developed in the United States; more biomedical innovation occurs here than anywhere else in the world. But that's likely to change because of the newly passed Inflation Reduction Act. It's a simple case of incentives. Innovative medicines take about $2.6 billion over 10 to 15 years to complete. Pharmaceutical companies can only afford the trial and error of research and development (R&D) because the successes offset the price of the failures. But by empowering government bureaucrats to set artificial price caps on drugs, the Inflation Reduction Act will remove the incentive to produce innovative therapeutics for patients in … [Read more...] about Biden’s cancer research reduction act | Opinion
Golden retriever’s reaction after seeing he’s at the vet delights internet
A golden retriever's attempt to flee from a veterinarian visit has gone viral online, as pet owners relate to the hilarious and very familiar reaction. Alfie the golden retriever is quite like many other dogs in his hatred for the vet. Unlike others though, he wasn't willing to just grin and bear it. Instead, Alfie's owner captured the moment he decided to run straight away from the dreaded building. "The moment your dog realizes he's at the vets so runs back to the car," the owner wrote on-screen. Alfie, who was still attached to his lead, jumped out of the car and hurtled off, before swallowing his pride and circling back around to the car when he realised exactly where he was. According to a comment by Alfie's owner, it was the sight of the "dreaded building" that made him aware of the location. She joked that Alfie "suddenly felt fine" soon after their arrival at the vet. Alfie isn't alone in his fear of the vet. A study in 2018 found that 41 percent of companion dogs … [Read more...] about Golden retriever’s reaction after seeing he’s at the vet delights internet
Company caught on video drowning live pigeons for student dissection charged with 25 counts of animal cruelty
A company that provides dead animals for study and dissection is facing 25 charges of animal cruelty due to the way they allegedly killed the animals. If found guilty, the owners could face up to $25,000 in fines and/or up to six years in jail. As Newsweek reported in November, the biological supply company Bio Corporation was the subject of hidden video and an investigation into their practices. The video, shown above, was secretly recorded by an undercover representative from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, or PETA. The footage showed workers at the company's Alexandria, Minnesota, facility apparently drowning fully-conscious pigeons, injecting live crayfish with latex and claiming that they sometimes would freeze turtles to death. The complaint, The State of Minnesota vs. Bio Company BDA Bio Corporation, claims that these methods are inhumane and illegal. The company says that most of the animals they acquire are brought to them already dead. But according … [Read more...] about Company caught on video drowning live pigeons for student dissection charged with 25 counts of animal cruelty
Snake given robot legs to walk by inventor: “Cannot believe this works”
A YouTuber has gained millions of views in just a couple of days after he built robot legs to help a snake "walk." The video, released on August 13, was made by Allen Pan, a content creator who uses engineering know-how to create homemade exoskeletons, battlebots and other inventions that often attract millions of views online. Pan said the project's purpose was to prove that he is a "snake lover" after he attracted some criticism from a previous video in which he and some friends appeared to capture a wild snake with the alleged purpose of sneaking it past airport security. (The snake ended up escaping before this could be attempted.) In the new video, Pan said he feels sorry for snakes because "they lost their legs." It's thought that about 100 million to 150 million years ago, snakes roamed on legs before they evolved to the point where they could survive without them. The circumstances surrounding this change have been a topic of debate. Some argue that snakes lost … [Read more...] about Snake given robot legs to walk by inventor: “Cannot believe this works”
