· June 1, 2004 ·

The work of the Standing Committee on Legal Aid and Indigent Defendants to expand access to civil legal aid and to defense representation for the poor goes a long way toward fulfillment of this goal. The committee, chaired this year by Bill Whitehurst of Austin, Texas, addresses policy and practice issues affecting legal aid programs across the United States. Over the years, it has created standards for the operation of legal aid offices, established standards for auditing/monitoring legal aid programs, and advocated for a strong federal system to support local legal aid programs. In recent years, the committee’s biggest push has been to expand and diversify funding sources for legal aid.Working with the ABA’s Governmental Affairs Office, the committee leads the fight to continue congressional funding for the Legal Services Corp. · May 26, 2018 ·

A legal defense fund set up to help President Donald Trump's former campaign adviser Michael Cavuto has surpassed its goal and will use the additional money to assist others with legal expenses due to the Russia probe of the 2016 presidential campaign, The Washington Times reported Friday. Trustees for the fund issued a statement that said the Michael Caputo Fund had raised over $300,000 in a week. The goal had been to raise $125,000 for Caputo's legal expenses amassed due to his appearances before federal investigators about claims of Russian interference in the last presidential campaign. "With his fees so far paid in full, Michael asked us to consider assisting others caught up in this partisan witch hunt," principal trustee Ralph Lorigo said. "Our articles of trust allow such expenditures, and we believe his donors support this decision." The statement said the next recipient of proceeds from the fund would be J.D. Gordon, a former Pentagon spokesman who was director of national … [Read more...] about Caputo Legal Fund Surpasses Goal, Will Assist Others With Expenses Over Russia Probe

One rule updates requirements under the Vietnam Era Veterans’ Readjustment Assistance Act of 1974 (VEVRAA) and the other rule updates requirements under Section 503 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 (Section 503).The VEVRAA rule requires contractors to establish a metric by which to measure their success in recruiting and employing veterans.  For purposes of VEVRAA, the metric is called a “benchmark” and is either based on the national percentage of veterans in the workforce (currently 8%) or the contractor’s own benchmark based on the best available data.  The rule will require contractors to evaluate yearly the progress they have made on reaching their benchmark.  The new VEVRAA rule also clarifies veteran job listings and subcontract requirements to facilitate … [Read more...] about Long-Anticipated Vietnam Era Veterans’ Readjustment Assistance Act of 1974 (VEVRAA) and Section 503 Regulations Finally Published
