Zinedine Zidane quits as Real Madrid manager five days after winning UEFA Champions League

· May 31, 2018 ·

Jacob Bogage, The Washington Post Published 7:39 am, Thursday, May 31, 2018 Less than a week after his club captured a historic third consecutive European championship, Real Madrid Manager Zinedine Zidane announced he's leaving the team, sending Spain's top side searching for its fourth manager in five years. Since taking over for Rafael Benitez in January 2016, Zidane led Real to a 105-16-28 record in 149 matches, including a La Liga championship and the three UEFA Champions League titles. Real beat Liverpool, 3-1, last week for its most recent banner. Zidane, 45, said at a surprise news conference that he was not tired of coaching, but "it would have been difficult for me to win again next year." He said he is not interested in coaching again in the near future. Future of left-wing mayors of Madrid, Barcelona in balance

· June 14, 2019 ·

Updated 12:37 pm CDT, Friday, June 14, 2019 BARCELONA, Spain (AP) — The future of the left-wing mayors of Spain's two biggest cities is being decided as political parties work against the clock to determine who will govern the country's municipal governments. Ada Colau, a former housing activist, is poised to remain in charge of Barcelona after her party members voted Friday for her proposal to join in a coalition with the Socialist Party. The other option would have been to allow the Catalan separatist party ERC to take over city hall. In Madrid, three right-wing parties are struggling to strike a last-minute deal they need to oust 75-year-old former judge Manuela Carmena. Cities across Spain have until Saturday to choose mayors following May 26 elections. Colau and Carmena came to power in 2015 on far-left tickets. … [Read more...] about Future of left-wing mayors of Madrid, Barcelona in balance

Watch: Battle of the Water drenches residents of Madrid

· July 15, 2019 ·

The annual Vallecas water festival drenched residents of Madrid on Sunday. The spectacle emerged from an ironic demand by locals for a port in the Vallecas neighbourhood, which lies 350 km from the sea. As a light-hearted commemoration of the demand, residents engage in a neighbourhood water-fight every year. Another, more practical reason for the festival was the sweltering heat in Spain, which saw temperatures of up to 40°C last weekend. "The best part is coming here with the family, getting wet and having a great time," said Jose Luis, a local electrician. Demonstrating their commitment to the water, many participants even dressed up as pirates. The annual festival, commonly known as Battle of the Water is now in its 38th year. … [Read more...] about Watch: Battle of the Water drenches residents of Madrid
