Active COVID cases cross the 100-mark in Visakhapatnam district

June 23, 2022 by www.thehindu.com

The active COVID-19 positive cases crossing the 100-mark in the district, is a cause for alarm. Though severity has not been seen in the new cases, one cannot be sure of the after-effects, and it’s always better to take proper precautions and to avoid crowds, say health experts. With the advent of the monsoon, seasonal diseases like dengue, malaria and chikungunya are on the rise and people having fever, cold and cough no longer seem to be bothered about the pandemic. “I am not interested in taking the booster dose for COVID-19 as the cases have declined and even those affected by the virus are recovering within a few days,” says a senior citizen, who had taken both the first and second doses. He seems to echo the general feeling among a large number of people “Only three COVID-19 positive patients were admitted to the King George Hospital (KGH) till yesterday (June 21). There are 116 active cases in the district. All of them have shown mild symptoms, and they are undergoing … [Read more...] about Active COVID cases cross the 100-mark in Visakhapatnam district

Abortion access in California isn’t equal statewide. These maps show where clinics are concentrated.

June 25, 2022 by www.sfchronicle.com

California is already home to nearly 20% of U.S. abortion clinics . Now that the Supreme Court has struck down Roe v. Wade , it’s likely that ensuing closures across the nation will mean the state becomes host to a third of U.S. clinics within months. But within California, abortion access is uneven . More than half of the state’s abortion clinics are concentrated in five counties, and 22 counties have no abortion clinics at all. These 22 counties are concentrated along the state’s eastern flank, spanning Modoc in the north to Inyo in the south. To understand the geographic distribution of abortion clinics across the state, the Chronicle obtained data from UCSF’s Advancing New Standards in Reproductive Health program, or ANSIRH. The data includes nearly 800 clinics nationwide that were open and providing abortion services in 2021 — 168 of which were in California (though four are virtual or telehealth clinics with no physical location). Most of the 22 counties with no … [Read more...] about Abortion access in California isn’t equal statewide. These maps show where clinics are concentrated.

Dangers of centralized control

June 22, 2022 by koreajoongangdaily.joins.com

Kim Byung-yeon The author, a professor of economics, is the director of the Institute of the National Future Strategy at Seoul National University. János Kornai, a Hungarian economist and emeritus professor at Harvard University, had been a top expert in socialist economies. He coined the term “shortage economy” in planned economies, reasoning that the excess concentration of government power leads to supply shortages and stagnation in technological development. Since the government pressures enterprises to achieve their target output, they are only interested in having enough supplies for output and have less interest in innovation. He settled in the U.S. after leaving his country at his mid-50s after working as a visiting professor at the Institute of Advance Study at Princeton University. Even as the institute paid for his research, it had not set a timetable for the progress and completion or specified any obligation to deliver the results in the contract. “Heightened alert”: Abortion providers brace for Supreme Court ruling

June 22, 2022 by www.denverpost.com

In her first week on the job at a Philadelphia abortion clinic, Amanda Kifferly was taught how to search for bombs. About a year later, protesters blocked the entrances and exits of the The Women’s Centers, at one point pulling Kifferly into something resembling a mosh pit, where they surrounded her and shoved her around. And on the night of last winter’s arguments before the U.S. Supreme Court in a case that could end the nationwide right to abortion, people gathered outside a clinic in New Jersey with lawn chairs, a cooler and a flaming torch — a sight that brought to mind lynchings and other horrors of the country’s racist past, says Kifferly, who now serves as vice president for abortion access. Such scenes have become familiar for providers and patients across the country over the decades since the landmark 1973 Roe v. Wade ruling legalizing abortion. At times the violence has been far more severe, including bombings, arson and murders — from the 1993 killing of Dr. David Gunn … [Read more...] about “Heightened alert”: Abortion providers brace for Supreme Court ruling

Watch: Pro-Russian forces fire salvos at Ukrainian positions

June 22, 2022 by www.newsweek.com

Images purport to show forces of the pro-Russia Donetsk People's Republic (DPR) firing salvos from multiple rocket launcher vehicles at Ukrainian positions. The footage begins by showing a helicopter crossing the sky before cutting to what appear to be two BM-21 Grad multiple rocket launcher vehicles. One of the vehicles can be seen flying what appears to be a pirate skull and crossbones flag while the other appears to fly the Russian flag, with the Russian coat of arms on it. Both vehicles have a white "Z" daubed on their side. A soldier can be seen speaking into a walkie-talkie, with the vehicles in the background, before they suddenly start firing their missiles at unseen targets. The footage was obtained from the People's Militia of the DPR Wednesday morning, along with a statement saying that the images show "artillerymen of the 9th regiment of the [People's Militia of the] DPR striking at the positions of Ukrainian nationalists." A spokesman for the DPR said: "The … [Read more...] about Watch: Pro-Russian forces fire salvos at Ukrainian positions

Twenty Killed as Russia Rains Rockets on Kharkiv

June 22, 2022 by www.news18.com

Russian forces pounded Ukraine’s second-largest city Kharkiv and surrounding countryside with rockets, killing at least 20 people in what Kyiv called a bid to force it to pull resources from the main battlefield to protect civilians from attack. Inside Russia, a fire tore through an oil refinery just 8 km (5 miles) from the Ukrainian border, after what the refinery described as a cross border attack by two drones. In the main battlefield city of Sievierodonetsk, where Russia has claimed to have Ukrainian forces surrounded since last week, scenes filmed by a freelance journalist made clear the battle was not over, with Ukrainian troops able to resupply their garrison by crossing a river in inflatable rafts. The Russian strikes on Kharkiv, throughout Tuesday and continuing on Wednesday morning, were the worst for weeks in the area where normal life had been returning since Ukraine pushed Russian forces back in a major counter-offensive last month. “It was shelling by Russian … [Read more...] about Twenty Killed as Russia Rains Rockets on Kharkiv

The coronavirus pandemic is “not over anywhere until it’s over everywhere,” the head of the World Health Organization says — and it’s “most certainly not over.” People who work as political signature gatherers found a new way to make a buck during the pandemic: pop-up coronavirus test sites. The mushrooming spread of coronavirus mutations is presenting an unwelcome prospect — that the virus could outrun measles as the most contagious of all known infections.
