The 52-year-old man, Stephen McCartan, is a veteran soldier and had gone out that night with a friend. However, they both got separated and McCartan decided to head back home which was three miles from the place. How Fear Spreads the Coronavirus
Photographs by Tony Luong O n a Friday afternoon in mid-April, Gladys Vega received a disturbing message: A woman hospitalized with COVID-19 needed food for the 11-year-old daughter she’d left at home. Worried that the girl would go hungry, Vega rushed out of her office and into the tangle of downtown Chelsea, Massachusetts, a 1.8-square-mile city across the Mystic River from Boston. The 52-year-old Vega, wearing a black tracksuit, a highlighter-yellow T-shirt, and a little bit of matching eye glitter, jumped out of the car so quickly, I could barely keep up. She approached a narrow brick apartment building and asked the people on the stoop to open the front door. “You don’t have to worry; I’m not immigration,” Vega said in Spanish. “Let me in.” Vega was accustomed to convincing fearful Chelsea residents to trust her. More and more restrictive federal immigration measures had motivated some locals—day laborers, food-factory workers, janitors, and other employees now deemed … [Read more...] about How Fear Spreads the Coronavirus
China cuts borrowing rate more than expected to revive housing sector
China cut its benchmark reference rate for mortgages by an unexpectedly wide margin on May 20, its second reduction this year as Beijing seeks to revive the ailing housing sector to prop up the economy. Senior officials have pledged further measures to fight a slowdown in the world's second-biggest economy, hit by COVID-19 outbreaks that prompted stringent measures and mobility restrictions and causing huge disruptions to activity. Many market participants believe the move was also a response to Chinese Premier Li Keqiang's call to decisively step up policy adjustments and let the economy return to normal quickly. "Today's reduction to the five-year Loan Prime Rate should help drive a revival in housing sales, which have gone from bad to worse recently," Julian Evans-Pritchard at Capital Economics wrote in a note. "But the lack of any reduction to the one-year LPR suggests that the PBOC is trying to keep easing targeted and that we shouldn't expect large-scale stimulus of the … [Read more...] about China cuts borrowing rate more than expected to revive housing sector
BJP ended corruption culture in the northeast, says Amit Shah
Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday claimed the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had ended the “corruption culture” prevalent in the northeast during the Congress rule to ensure the proper utilisation of every penny sent to the region. Addressing a public rally in eastern Arunachal Pradesh’s Namsai, he said development funds earmarked for the region used to be siphoned off by middlemen when the Congress reigned supreme. “The northeast saw fast-track development only after Prime Minister Narendra Modi came to power in 2014. But Congress won’t see the development if their leaders keep their eyes closed,” Mr. Shah said after inaugurating a slew of projects and laying the foundation stone of others worth a total of ₹1,000-crore. “Rahul Gandhi, open your eyes and discard Italian glasses and wear Indian ones. You could then see what Modi has done for the region you neglected for 50 years,” he said. “The culture of corruption in the northeast ended under the Modi government. Every penny is … [Read more...] about BJP ended corruption culture in the northeast, says Amit Shah

School trips
H ow walking to school helped us learn important life lessons those days? Watching children commuting in jam-packed school vans, along with a rebuking ayah trying to calm them and a senseless driver trying to flout safety rules, takes me down memory lane to my school days more than four decades ago. School vans were not popular those days, and most children walked to schools, chatting with friends and having lots of fun all the way. Children of the current era, who live in a fast world, will never understand the real fun of school-going, as commuting on vehicles deprives them of opportunities to see the world, watch people and learn essential life lessons schools may not teach them. The first enemy to enjoying the morning walk to school was footwear. We mostly walked barefoot, and the scalding hot asphalt pavements strengthened our feet to walk fast. Sometimes we would dangle our way to school holding on to bullock carts laden with paddy stalks or other agricultural commodities. … [Read more...] about School trips
Remembering the angels
E very year, May 12 is celebrated as International Nurses Day. Nurses have always been the backbone of the healthcare sector. Their contribution to patient treatment outcome often goes unacknowledged as in the pandemic. Their services and placement in critical treatment areas are subject to flexible criteria and dynamics of prevalent situations. Nurses have helped and guided me immensely leading up to becoming a neurosurgeon. I had taken a couple of entrance examinations for neurosurgical training in 2001 after graduating as a general surgeon. The results invariably waitlisted me. Having qualified from a small town, I was initially overwhelmed by the weight of clinical exposure of the competition of big-town applicants. An institute in Thiruvananthapuram, where I had applied for neurosurgery residency, required a clinical examination as part of the entrance examination. Having completed the general surgery course in my hometown Mangalore a few months earlier, I had no medical … [Read more...] about Remembering the angels
