White House chief of staff Mark Meadows on Friday sought to clarify President Donald Trump's recent comments about whether he will commit to a peaceful transition of power if he loses the election. "I think he commits to a peaceful transfer as long as it is a fair election," Meadows said Friday morning during an interview with CBS This Morning . The president has frequently raised concerns, without evidence, about widespread voter fraud and has cast doubt on the dependability of mail-in voting, which Americans are expected to use more this year than ever before because of the continuing threats posed by the coronavirus pandemic. Asked Wednesday if he would agree to a peaceful transition of power if Democratic nominee Joe Biden wins the election, Trump told reporters at a White House press briefing, "We're going to have to see what happens." He cited a general concern over ballots and added, "There won't be a transfer, frankly; there'll be a continuation." Trump made similar … [Read more...] about White House chief of staff seeks to clarify Trump’s peaceful transition of power comments

Biden Admin Looks to Force Doctors to Perform Gender Transition Procedures
The Biden administration is appealing a district court decision in order to force doctors to perform gender transition procedures on children. Oral argument for the case took place Thursday morning in New Orleans, Louisiana. After inheriting a court case from the Obama administration over a “transgender mandate” that sought to force doctors to provide what the left describes as “gender-affirming care” to children, the Biden administration is challenging the district court decision to enjoin the Obama-era rule. The Franciscan Alliance, a Catholic healthcare system, challenged the rule that was included as part of Obamacare because it “requires doctors and hospitals across the country to perform gender-transition procedures on any patient, including a child, even if the procedure violates the doctor’s conscience and could harm the patient.” “No medical professional should be forced to participate in controversial and irreversible gender transition procedures that can be … [Read more...] about Biden Admin Looks to Force Doctors to Perform Gender Transition Procedures
How to ease the transition to college when mental health is a concern
The move from high school to college can be a trying one, particularly for students with mental health concerns. But today there are ways to make it easier. "In the last few years, and especially since the pandemic began, campus resources for all students have proliferated, and ahead of coming to campus is when students should be connecting with the resources that they need," says Amy Gatto, director of research and evaluation at Active Minds, an organization that works to make talking about mental health on campus as natural as talking about physical health. A 2021 survey by the American College Health Association of close to 100,000 college students found that 16% of college men and 33% of college women had been diagnosed with anxiety, and 14% of college men and 25% of college women had been diagnosed with depression. A study published in June by the Healthy Minds Network - which conducts research on the mental health of college students - involving more than 350,000 … [Read more...] about How to ease the transition to college when mental health is a concern
Draft Paris agreement disappoints civil society
With world leaders committing to an ambitious Paris deal during the first week of the UN climate change summit, hopes were running high that the concerns of communities suffering the worst impacts of climate change would be addressed in the agreement. However, as the talks conclude and a draft of the agreement to be adopted later this week was released on December 9, gaps between the promises made and what the fine print of the document lays out began to appear, with civil society organisations and people’s movements opposing the dilution of Article 2 of the agreement, which lays down the purpose of the agreement. Annabella Rosemberg of the International Trade Union Confederation, who is attending the summit as an Observer on behalf of ITUC, said that the wordings of the draft agreement prepared in mid-October in Bonn, had included the phrase ‘just transition of the workforce and the creation of decent work’ in Article 2 but now this had been moved to the preamble of the agreement, … [Read more...] about Draft Paris agreement disappoints civil society

‘A Quiet Passion’ Is a Biopic Told With Poetic Scope
Leave it to an intimate biopic of the reclusive 19th-century poet Emily Dickinson to feature the most powerful special effect of the year. The first 20 minutes of A Quiet Passion follow Dickinson as a teenager, played by Emma Bell; she attends a Christian boarding school at which she is not exactly impudent, but certainly eager to challenge and pick apart any dictum her teachers throw at her. She writes with fervor, attends the opera with her family, and astonishes her disapproving aunt with her untamed intellectual curiosity. “I shall pray for you all,” her aunt tuts upon leaving the homestead. “And remember, keep atheism at bay, and watch the clock that ticks for us all.” With that, the writer-director Terence Davies sets the clock ticking, and tilts his film away from this traditional biopic territory and into something far more mesmerizing. One by one, each member of Emily’s family sits for a daguerreotype, and the camera slowly pushes in on them, their features subtly morphing … [Read more...] about ‘A Quiet Passion’ Is a Biopic Told With Poetic Scope
Inside USS Ronald Reagan, U.S. aircraft carrier near Taiwan
As tensions have grown between Washington and Beijing over the potential visit of House speaker Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan, renewed attention has been focused on the U.S. military presence in the South China Sea and the area surrounding the self-governing island claimed by China as part of its territory.
