Breaking Down The Hong Kong Crisis: A Fight For Rule Of Law
By: AKSHITA SAXENA 20 Aug 2019 6:06 AM GMT Hong Kong Protest (Image Courtesy : AFP) The Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China, Hong Kong, is now in the third month of anti-government demonstrations that show no sign of abating soon. The massive protests have emerged against a largely despised bill that will allow extradition from Hong Kong to mainland China. How It All Started "The Fugitive Offenders and Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters Legislation (Amendment) Bill 2019", (the Bill) was introduced by the government of Hong Kong to enable extradition between Hong Kong and Taiwan. This bill was proposed in the light of an infamous murder case. Chan Tong Kai of Hong Kong went to Taiwan with his girlfriend, Poon Hiu-Wing on a vacation, where he murdered her. After committing the offence, he returned to Hong Kong and later confessed to having killed her. However, the government of Hong Kong couldn't charge him for murder, because the … [Read more...] about Breaking Down The Hong Kong Crisis: A Fight For Rule Of Law
China: Peaceful Hong Kong Protesters Using ‘Lethal Weapons’
Chinese media is working overtime to paint the Hong Kong protest movement as a gang of violent radicals driven mad by Western propaganda. The latest round of editorial broadsides was fired over charges brought against four protesters for carrying “offensive weapons” to Saturday’s protest at the Yuen Long train station. Yuen Long was the site of an attack by pro-Chinese forces against protesters, bystanders, and reporters the previous weekend. The white-clad mob most certainly was armed with offensive weapons, ranging from bamboo poles to metal rods, and they were employed with gusto, sending dozens of people to the hospital. The four individuals charged with bringing weapons to the Yuen Long protest ranged from 18 to 25 years of age. They were denied bail on Tuesday and will appear in court again on September 3. According to Hong Kong media reports, the four were arrested on Saturday morning wearing “masks, eye shields, and helmets” and carrying … [Read more...] about China: Peaceful Hong Kong Protesters Using ‘Lethal Weapons’
Pro-Independence Party Threatened with Ban in Hong Kong
Hong Kong’s independence-minded National Party could be facing a long-feared ban from politics, and the hints are not subtle: the police actually sent the party a letter on Tuesday giving it three weeks to justify its continued survival. The Associated Press reports an official from the territorial security bureau wrote to 27-year-old Hong Kong National Party leader Andy Chan to inform him a decision has been made to dissolve his party as a threat to “public safety” and “public order” under a national security law last invoked against a political party in 1997. The HKNP has only been around since 2016, formed in protest of Beijing’s growing influence over semi-autonomous Hong Kong.Chan told the Associated Press his party “has always been an enemy of China,” which goes a long way toward explaining why it has been sentenced to political execution with just three weeks to file an appeal. Chan thinks Beijing was enraged by his recent trip to … [Read more...] about Pro-Independence Party Threatened with Ban in Hong Kong
Hong Kong’s Richest Man Lectures Protesters to ‘Love China’
Hong Kong’s wealthiest man, Li Ka-shing, bought multiple front-page newspaper ads Friday encouraging protesters to “love China” and “love [the] rule of law.” The 91-year-old also apparently paid a man known as the “French Spider-Man” to unfurl a large red banner showing a unified Chinese communist and Hong Kong flag and two hands shaking.Li’s front-page ads used cryptic language to discourage Hong Kong residents from protesting against the repressive communist state, as they have been doing by the millions since early June. The ad featured the Chinese character for the word “violence” crossed out by a red circle and the message, “the best intentions can bring the worst results, cease the anger with love,” according to a translation by the Hong Kong Free Press (HKFP). “Love China, love Hong Kong, love oneself; love freedom, love empathy, love rule of law,” the ads read. Another version of the ad alluded … [Read more...] about Hong Kong’s Richest Man Lectures Protesters to ‘Love China’
