Though the Supreme Court has allowed an extended deadline of August 28 with a bandwidth of seven days until September 4, the preparations to demolish Supertech’s twin 40-storey towers in Emerald Court project, located in Noida, are underway. Explosives have reached the spot, while the test blast of the buildings, namely Apex and Ceyane, has already been carried out. What Is The Issue? Located at Sector 93-A of Noida, the twin towers are close to the Noida-Greater Noida Expressway. One tower has a height of 103 metres, while another is around 97-metre tall. Together, both the towers have a built-up area of about 7.5 lakh square feet. The buildings violate the minimum distance requirement between them and were also built illegally without taking the consent of the individual flat owners as required under the UP Apartment Act. As a result, in August 2021, the Supreme Court ordered the demolition of the structures. Originally, the twin towers were to be razed by May 22, which … [Read more...] about Supertech Twin Towers in Noida: How Demolition Will Take Place; Know Planning In Detail

House Dems Send Sweeping Spending Bill to Biden’s Desk
The most ambitious Democratic legislation since the Affordable Care Act is now officially on its way to President Joe Biden’s desk. On Friday afternoon, the U.S. House passed a $430 billion bill focused on climate change, health care, and tax reform by a margin of 220 to 207, with all Democrats voting for the bill and all Republicans voting against it. With the U.S. Senate having approved the bill on a party-line margin on Sunday, Democrats are heading into the August recess—and the heart of the 2022 campaign season—invigorated, having finally notched a legislative win that had escaped them for over a year. The bill with the midterm-focused name of the “Inflation Reduction Act” is the culmination of Democrats’ tortured quest to see how much of their agenda they could stuff into a bill without losing a single vote in the Senate and more than a handful of votes in the House. The legislation heading to the White House now does not, contrary to its name, do much to … [Read more...] about House Dems Send Sweeping Spending Bill to Biden’s Desk
S.F. has 5 months to convince the state it can build 82,000 housing units. This is the sticking point
San Francisco is used to fighting its housing wars under the gilded dome of City Hall. No longer: Now all eyes are on Sacramento. On Tuesday , in a dramatic one-two punch, the state Department of Housing and Community Development announced that it was initiating a review of San Francisco’s housing approval and permitting process, an intervention meant to cure the city of its addiction to the endless debate, legal wrangling and community process that has made the city dead last in California when it comes to approving projects in a timely manner. In a related matter, HCD also told the city it had to go back to the drawing board on its so-called housing element, that once-every-eight-year residential development plan every California city must provide as a road map to reaching state housing goals. The housing element must be certified by Jan. 31 of next year. While the investigation of the city’s housing practices will likely take more than a year, the housing element is more … [Read more...] about S.F. has 5 months to convince the state it can build 82,000 housing units. Congress OKs Dems’ climate, health bill, a Biden triumph
By ALAN FRAM WASHINGTON (AP) — A divided Congress gave final approval Friday to Democrats’ flagship climate and health care bill, handing President Joe Biden a back-from-the-dead triumph on coveted priorities that the party hopes will bolster their prospects for keeping their hold on Congress in November’s elections. The House used a party-line 220-207 vote to pass the legislation, which is but a shadow of the larger, more ambitious plan to supercharge environment and social programs that Biden and his party envisioned early last year. Even so, Democrats happily declared victory on top-tier goals like providing Congress’ largest ever investment in curbing carbon emissions, reining in pharmaceutical costs and taxing large companies, a vote they believe will show they can wring accomplishments from a routinely gridlocked Washington that often disillusions voters. “Today is a day of celebration, a day we take another giant step in our momentous agenda,” said House Speaker Nancy … [Read more...] about Congress OKs Dems’ climate, health bill, a Biden triumph
The Inflation Reduction Act is about to become law. What it will do for Californians
The Inflation Reduction Act is headed to President Biden’s desk. The House approved the bill , a pared-back version of the original Build Back Better legislation, Friday afternoon, with all 220 Democrats voting for it and 207 Republicans voting against it. Now that the approximately $700-billion package is set to become law, what will it mean for you? Here’s a look at how the bill’s provisions could impact Californians. Healthcare California stands to gain the most from several of the bill’s healthcare provisions because it has the largest number of potential beneficiaries. For starters, the bill would continue for three years the extra premium subsidies for Affordable Care Act insurance policies that last year’s American Rescue Plan inaugurated. Those subsidies — which amounted to $1.7 billion a year for California alone — dramatically lowered premiums for more than 1 million Californians, including middle-income consumers who had not been eligible for aid … [Read more...] about The Inflation Reduction Act is about to become law. Exhibitions at Amritsar’s Partition Museum and in Delhi give us the people’s history of ‘azadi’

When the great migration happened, people fleeing their homes and hearths took those beautiful fabrics across. The khes was often made by women at home. The thick, sturdy cloth had several uses — as dhurrie or something to wrap oneself up in during cold winters. It is long-lasting, as evident from the 80-year-old khes on display at the exhibition. A video show will talk about the journey of The Khes Project, other textile traditions of undivided Punjab and about women-led craft collectives active in the State. Close ties The Partition Museum’s next mammoth project is the launch of another Partition museum in the capital. Set up by TAACHT, the Dara Shikoh Library at Kashmiri Gate, Old Delhi, is being readied for the museum. National Biodiversity Authority chief dismisses concerns about reintroduction of cheetahs
Even as preparations are underway to reintroduce cheetahs in Madhya Pradesh's Kuno-Palpur National Park (KNP), National Biodiversity Authority (NBA) chief Vinod B. Mathur dismissed concerns that this may cause the same problems faced by tigers in the country after breeding. Though the pilot project slated to be carried out in a limited area of the KNP has a substantial scientific basis, there is no need to immediately make this transcontinental experiment a matter of joy or sorrow, the NBA president said. "There may be a difference of opinion among experts on the project to reintroduce cheetahs from Africa in India. But we should keep in mind that cheetahs are being brought to the country on an experimental basis and there is scientific backing for the project,” Mr. Mathur told PTI in Indore. The NBA president dismissed apprehensions that after cheetahs reintroduced in India, their population could spread across the country after breeding, leading to the same problems faced … [Read more...] about National Biodiversity Authority chief dismisses concerns about reintroduction of cheetahs

When ‘Make in India’ was more than just a government slogan
My father, Abhijit Ghose, graduated from IIT Kharagpur in 1973. Engineers are sure of their numbers and he is certain that more than 70% of his batchmates are now overseas. As graduates from India’s premier technological institute, they were welcomed by universities and corporations abroad with handsome offers. As a child, while figuring ‘what I wanted to be when I grew up’, I often asked my father why he wanted to be an engineer. He said it was because he wanted to build things — this was confusing to me because most engineers I knew then, and know now, work in sales or finance. He wanted to make, and he wanted to make in India . Also Read What are the key defence projects under ‘Make In India’ scheme For the first two years after college, he made audio systems at his parents’ Calcutta home with a batchmate, commissioning local carpenters to build cabinets to encase them. Though they had one ‘celebrity client’ — Sharmila Tagore’s sister Tinkoo Tagore — this was … [Read more...] about When ‘Make in India’ was more than just a government slogan
Tribal students’ first date with airport, beach
A group of students from various tribal hamlets in and around Nilambur had a once-in-a-lifetime experience when they took out an excursion to the Calicut airport and Kozhikode city on Friday. The 130 tribal students from 26 hamlets spread between Edakkara and Karuvarakkundu were on cloud nine as they watched in awe flights land and take off at the airport. Most of them saw the airport for the first time and experienced the joy of watching flights take off and land. Their joy doubled when they landed at the Kozhikode beach after an awesome experience at the Regional Science Centre and Planetarium in the city. Thanks to Jan Sikshan Sansthan (JSS) headed by its chairman P.V. Abdul Wahab, MP, most tribal students had their first beach experience in life. Mr. Wahab flagged off their picnic at GUP School, Chandakkunnu, where they had their breakfast. Most of them ate ‘noolputtu’ and ‘appam’ for the first time in life as most tribal communities, particularly the Kattunaikar, Paniyar and … [Read more...] about Tribal students’ first date with airport, beach
