A Yazidi victim of the Islamic State and a Congolese doctor won the Nobel Peace Prize on Friday for their efforts to end the use of sexual violence as a weapon of war and armed conflict. Gynecologist and surgeon Denis Mukwege won the prize for his work treating tens of thousands of women and girls affected by rape and sexual violence in the Democratic Republic of Congo, which has one of the worst human and women’s rights records in the world.He lives under the permanent protection of U.N. peacekeepers at his hospital, mainly because of his calls to impose harsher sentences against those who use sexual violence weapon of war. THE 2018 Nobel Peace Prize was awarded today to Denis Mukwege and Nadia Murad. They received their award for their struggle to end the use of sexual violence as a weapon in conflict. Who are Nobel Peace Prize winners Denis Mukwege and Nadia Murad? Denis Mukwege is a doctor and gynecologist who has treated thousands of women and girls affected by rape and sexual violence in the unstable Democratic Republic of Congo. Born in Costermansville in Belgian Congo, 63-year-old Mukwege was the third of nine children born to a Pentecostal minister and his wife. He studied medicine at a medical school in Burundi and decided to travel to France to study gynecology after treating female patients suffering pain and genital lesions after giving birth. DONALD Trump, Kim Jong-un and Edward Snowdon are in line to win the Nobel Peace Prize today. The North Korean leader and his South Korean counterpart Moon Jae-in are favourites to win with Brit bookies Ladbrokes. The duo held three summits this year, leading to a drastic plummet in regional tensions. The prize committee commended the US President for initiating his historic meeting with North Korea's leader. It was interpreted as an olive branch to Jong-un, with the committee deeming the a "huge and important step" for peace. A group of 18 Republican lawmakers wrote to the committee in May, nominating Trump for his "in recognition of his work to end the Korean War".
