Pakistani-Origin Member of UK’s House of Lords Accused of Exploiting Women
London: A Pakistani-origin member of the House of Lords has embroiled in accusations that he used his position to exploit vulnerable women who came to him seeking help. Lord Nazir Ahmed, who is at the forefront of anti-India campaigns including backing pro-Khalistan groups in the UK, is alleged to have conducted a sexual relationship with a woman after she asked him for help, according to a BBC report. Another unnamed woman who had sought Ahmed's assistance also claims he suggested she should spend the night at his London home, it said. "Lord Ahmed used my trust to repeatedly have intercourse with me," Tahira Zaman told Lords' Commissioner for Standards, Lucy Scott-Moncrieff, in a complaint. "I feel I have been preyed upon due to my vulnerability and used by Lord Ahmed," the 43-year-old said. Zaman says she approached Ahmed in February 2017 through a mutual friend, hoping he would help get the police to investigate a Muslim faith healer who she felt was a danger to women. “I discovered red ‘dots’ on my skin, a day later I was diagnosed with a rare cancer”
I want to be a dentist in the future, so in late 2021 I was at college in Florida doing pre-dental courses. I was balancing a lot because I was also on the basketball team and often had practice right after class. Originally, I was going to study closer to home, in Iowa, so I was juggling a lot with a new state and new friends. I hadn't been doing a good job of time management, so I was not getting much sleep and I was feeling run down but I wasn't really thinking anything of it. I had swollen lymph nodes and a little bit of a cold that I couldn't get over and I was getting easily bruised, but I'm a basketball player, so again, so I didn't think much of it. What happened next is kind of crazy; I really think it was God. I had been bruised and feeling fatigued for weeks, and in early November, my sister and brother-in-law came to Florida to visit me and watch my first home basketball game. We went out to dinner on Thursday November 11, after practice, and that's when I noticed the … [Read more...] about “I discovered red ‘dots’ on my skin, a day later I was diagnosed with a rare cancer”

Running an abortion clinic while waiting for court decision
The people who run America’s abortion clinics agree: There’s no job like it. There are the clients -- so many of them desperate, in need, grateful. There are the abortion opponents -- passionate, relentless, often furious. And hovering over it all are legal challenges, and the awareness that your clinic may be just a judicial ruling away from extinction. That reality became more urgent last week with a leaked, draft opinion from the U.S. Supreme Court suggesting a majority of justices support overturning the 1973 Roe vs Wade decision legalizing abortion. If that happens it could spell the end of abortion in about half the states. The Associated Press talked with three women and one man who run abortion clinics in such states about their work. Some came to the work through personal brushes with abortion; for others it started as a job. For all, it has become a calling. ___ Recommended Monkeypox: British tourist tested for virus Boris … [Read more...] about Running an abortion clinic while waiting for court decision

‘Top Gun: Maverick’ stars hope the film’s Black pilots will inspire a new generation of fans
Actor Jay Ellis remembers watching the 1986 movie “Top Gun” at an Air Force base in Austin, Texas. He was only 8 or 9 years old, and the blockbuster made him dream about becoming a fighter pilot. Ellis wanted to be part of that military community. Now, he plays Navy fighter pilot Payback in the anticipated sequel “Top Gun: Maverick,” which releases nationwide Friday and in select theaters starting Tuesday. He said he sees the film as a way to say thank you to the real men and women who inspired him as a boy. “I grew up around aviation, and I think about the sacrifice that so many men and women take — they give, rather — just for us to be safe,” he said. “I think we all wrap our arms around this community and we protect it so much. And we understand the responsibility to be amazing on-screen for these folks.” Jay Ellis gets real about pulling midair stunts in ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ May 23, 2022 06:09 Both of Ellis' grandfathers, his … [Read more...] about ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ stars hope the film’s Black pilots will inspire a new generation of fans

False promises: 6 arrested over “honor killing” of sisters lured to Pakistan from Spain
Cops in Pakistan have arrested six men over the torture and fatal shooting of two sisters with Spanish residency in a suspected double "honor killing." Police in Pakistan's Punjab province made the arrests Sunday over the slaying of the sisters, who are Pakistani citizens and residents of Spain. They believe Aruj Abbas, 24, and Anisa Abbas, 21, were summoned along with their mother Azra Bibi from Catalonia to Pakistan on false pretenses on May 19. They said the victims were strangled and then shot dead as they slept at their maternal uncle's house in Nathia, a village in Gujrat district, on the night of May 20. Gujrat District Police believe the women were killed after they refused to sign documents so they could take their respective husbands to Spain. They believe the sisters wanted to divorce their Pakistani husbands, who are said to be siblings themselves and cousins of the women, so they could marry other men in Spain.
