Anthony Fenech Detroit Free Press Published 2:00 PM EST Jan 24, 2019 On Thursday afternoon, the Detroit Tigers begin their annual winter caravan across the state. But when the buses leave Comerica Park, heading around the Metro Detroit area and to west Michigan, one of the team’s few recognizable faces won’t be on board. Nicholas Castellanos has been the most-talked about Tiger this offseason – when will he be traded? Where will he be traded to? What will the team get back in return? – but a previously scheduled commitment will prevent him from presumably repeating the company line about the situation for the caravan or Saturday's TigerFest. Last year, Castellanos spoke at TigerFest about his dream of staying in Detroit for the duration of his career and winning a World Series with the team that drafted him nearly 10 years ago. But one year later, with free agency on the horizon and his name swirling in trade rumors, Castellanos sees the writing on the … [Read more...] about Tigers’ Nicholas Castellanos prefers trade sooner than later
Anthony Fenech Detroit Free Press Published 8:08 PM EST Jan 11, 2019 The Tigers entered Friday — the deadline to exchange salary numbers — with five arbitration-eligible players unsigned. But by the end of the night, all but one — Michael Fulmer — were inked to deals. No contract handed out Friday was bigger than the trickiest one, Nicholas Castellanos. According to multiple persons with knowledge of the situation, right fielder Nicholas Castellanos — whose salary calculation was considered difficult given the disparity between his offensive and defensive performance in 2018 — signed a one-year deal for $9.95 million. The Tigers later confirmed the move. Castellanos had been projected to receive $13.8 million in arbitration, according to mlbtraderumors.com, accepted as an industry source. He is coming off a career-best season offensively — hitting .298 with 23 home runs, 46 doubles and 89 RBIs in 2018 … [Read more...] about Detroit Tigers sign Nicholas Castellanos, avoid arbitration
Dec 19, 1:56 AM EST Newsletter Signup BusinessTechnologyWorldNationalMedia & CultureOpinionSportsLuxury World By Himanshu Goenka @HimGoJourno 12/06/17 AT 3:56 AM Among the numerous Christian relics around the world are those said to belong to St. Nicholas, the 4th-century saint who is the inspiration behind the modern-day Santa Claus. While the bulk of his supposed remains are stored in a basilica in Italy, researchers dated a fragment in a private collection in the United States and found it to originate from the same period as his death, as mentioned in historical accounts.According to legends, St. Nicholas was a wealthy man known for his generosity, which explains why he could have inspired the legend of a figure who brings gifts on Christmas. He is thought to have died in Myra (in present-day Turkey) around 343 AD, and his remains were later taken away by a group of Italian merchants, and stored in the Basilica di San Nicola, Bari, in southern Puglia, Italy, since … [Read more...] about Is Santa Claus Real? Anthony Fenech Detroit Free Press Published 8:46 PM EST Dec 11, 2018 LAS VEGAS – It probably won’t happen this week. Might not even happen this month. Maybe, come early February, right fielder Nicholas Castellanos will report to Lakeland, Fla., for his seventh season with the Detroit Tigers. But at some point between now and the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline, the Tigers are going to trade Castellanos. As of Tuesday night, they weren’t close to that point, though general manager Al Avila, without acknowledging Castellanos by name, did acknowledge the Tigers had been discussing possible trades with several teams during the first two days of Winter Meetings. Asked what trades were being discussed and with which teams, Avila said, “I’m not going to tell you all that stuff, but you can imagine.” It doesn’t take much of an imagination to envision Castellanos in another uniform next season. Coming off a career-best season … [Read more...] about Detroit Tigers will trade Nicholas Castellanos. But when?
