Drew Brees Weighs Hanging Up His NBC Mic, Returning to the NFL

May 16, 2022 by www.breitbart.com

After only one season behind the mic, former NFL quarterback Drew Brees is weighing his options for the near future and is thinking about putting his broadcast career on hold and going back to the NFL. Brees spent the past season as an NBC Sports analyst, but NBC is less than thrilled with his first year, according to some reports. According to the New York Post , “NBC soured on Brees’ potential after originally believing he could develop into the heir apparent to Cris Collinsworth on Sunday Night Football games.” Indeed, Brees’ performance during the Bengals-Raiders playoff game was panned. But Brees denies the reports that his broadcast career is in jeopardy, and NBC refused to reply to the paper’s requests for comment. On Sunday, Brees tweeted, “Despite speculation from media about my future this fall, I’m currently undecided. I may work for NBC, I may play football again, I may focus on business and philanthropy, I may train for the pickleball tour, senior golf … [Read more...] about Drew Brees Weighs Hanging Up His NBC Mic, Returning to the NFL

Broncos rookie Sebastian Gutierrez looks to make steep climb from Division II Minot State to NFL

May 15, 2022 by www.denverpost.com

Having already succeeded in making the move from tight end to right tackle two years earlier, Sebastian Gutierrez was confident flipping over to left tackle would have a similar result. But then Minot State, a Division II school in northwest North Dakota, traveled to play at  Augustana (S.D.) College in the 2021 season opener. All those practice reps during the 2020 season, when the Beavers’ season was cancelled by coronavirus? It didn’t compare. “I’ll tell you what, the first game was definitely a struggle,” Gutierrez said in a phone interview talking about the 49-0 loss. “But after that, I think I was decent.” The Broncos saw something more than decent when watching Gutierrez’s game tape, enough to sign him as an undrafted free agent ahead of this weekend’s rookie camp. Gutierrez is the first Minot State player to join an NFL team since Randy Hedberg … in 1977. Listed at 6-foot-6, 295, Gutierrez added 105 pounds during his college career.  The Broncos likely signed him … [Read more...] about Broncos rookie Sebastian Gutierrez looks to make steep climb from Division II Minot State to NFL

Tyler Hilinski, Washington State quarterback, had brain damage at suicide

June 26, 2018 by www.denverpost.com

PULLMAN, Wash. — The family of the Washington State football player who died of suicide in January said the 21-year-old quarterback had extensive brain damage that’s been linked to concussions from playing the sport. Tyler Hilinski was found dead in his apartment with a gunshot wound and a suicide note on Jan. 16. The family in those interviews said the autopsy results indicated that their son had signs of extensive brain damage known as chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or CTE, which has been found in hundreds of former NFL players. The sophomore quarterback was last seen alive the same day, when he dropped a teammate off on campus for morning class. Police said the rifle belonged to a teammate and that Hilinski took it without the teammate’s knowledge on or before Jan. 12. Kym Hilinski said they were shocked and numb after finding out that he had shot himself. She said he’d never shot a gun until the day before he died. There were no verbal signs that the young football … [Read more...] about Tyler Hilinski, Washington State quarterback, had brain damage at suicide

Broncos Journal: Showing ability to defend run will increase Nik Bonitto’s role as rookie

May 15, 2022 by www.denverpost.com

During his pre-draft visit to the Broncos last month, outside linebacker Nik Bonitto had a primary talking point. “It was really cool, when he came in, he kept talking about, ‘effecting the quarterback, effecting the quarterback,’ and even if he wasn’t sacking the quarterback, being around them,” coach Nathaniel Hackett said. “When someone talks about that, then you go back and check (the tape). It’s amazing to see how much he was around (the quarterback).” The Broncos liked what they saw from Bonitto during his Oklahoma career and made him their initial draft pick (No. 64). Bonitto was one of 36 players participating in rookie camp practices Friday through Saturday. Bonitto had 18 1/2 sacks in 39 games for the Sooners. “The ability to rush the passer (stood out on tape), the bend off the edge — this guy is a ready-made pass rusher,” defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero said. “Obviously, at this level, it’s going to get harder.” And … “We have to get him better with his … [Read more...] about Broncos Journal: Showing ability to defend run will increase Nik Bonitto’s role as rookie
