England were 84 for five at stumps on the second day of the rain-hit rescheduled fifth Test against India here on Saturday. Jonny Bairstow and skipper Ben Stokes were batting on 12 and 0 respectively with England still trailing India by 332 runs. Ravindra Jadeja reaffirmed his status as India's most valuable player across formats with a superbly crafted hundred before skipper Jasprit Bumrah took centre-stage, first smashing a world record and then blowing away England top-order on a rain-hit second day of the rescheduled fifth Test. At tea, England were struggling at 60 for 3 as a nicely warmed-up Bumrah first castled opener Alex Lees (6) with a delivery that came in with the angle. Then, in the post-lunch session, he got twice lucky as he removed Zak Crawley (9) and Ollie Pope (10) with the 'seventh' delivery of his third and sixth overs respectively. Both were fuller deliveries which enticed the two right-handers to go for drives as Shubman Gill at third slip and Shreyas … [Read more...] about Eng vs Ind, 5th Test, Day 2 | England 84-5 at stumps against India

Denied bail, Alt News co-founder Mohammed Zubair sent to 14 days in judicial custody
A Delhi court on Saturday denied bail to Alt-News co-founder Mohammed Zubair and remanded the journalist to 14 days in judicial custody, noting the probe was at “the initial stage”, considering the “overall facts and circumstances of the case” and given the “nature and gravity of offences”. Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Snigdha Sarvaria of the Patiala House court here pronounced the order around 7 p.m., almost five hours after the Special Cell (IFSO) DCP K.P.S. Malhotra told the media in a “broadcast” message that Mr. Zubair’s bail had been rejected and that he had been remanded to 14 days in judicial custody. The statement from the police had prompted Mr. Zubair’s counsel, Advocate Soutik Banerjee, to lash out at the police: “It is extremely scandalous and it speaks of the status of rule of law in our country today… How KPS Malhotra knows what the order is, is beyond me and this calls for serious introspection.” Soon after Mr. Banerjee’s statement, Mr. Malhotra said he had … [Read more...] about Denied bail, Alt News co-founder Mohammed Zubair sent to 14 days in judicial custody
Day-night protest planned against KSU leader’s arrest under KAAPA
The arrest and remand of Busher Jamsheer, a Kerala Students Union (KSU) leader under the Kerala Anti-Social Activities Prevention Act (KAAPA) in Kozhikode on Thursday have triggered strong protest against the police, with KSU terming it a politically instigated move to suppress agitations by youth against the LDF government. The KSU district leadership is planning to launch a day-night sit-in in front of the office of the District Police Chief (Kozhikode City) protesting against the “revengeful slapping of inapplicable sections” to permanently lock in political rivals. A meeting of the KSU district committee will be held here on Saturday ahead of announcing a final decision on the protest programme. “It was quite shocking that Mr. Jamsheer, KSU district secretary and law student, was detained under KAAPA for his alleged involvement in political clashes. If this was applicable to all, several leaders from the rival segment would have been in jail,” said KSU district president V.T. … [Read more...] about Day-night protest planned against KSU leader’s arrest under KAAPA

‘Achhe din’ promised by Modi not in sight: Siddaramaiah
The former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Saturday released a 40-page booklet highlighting the “failures” of the BJP government at the Centre on various fronts, and said that “Achchhe din” promised by Prime Minister Narendra Modi was not in sight in the country. The booklet titled ‘Varsha Entu, Avantara Noorentu’ (Years eight, blunders 108) was released ahead of the BJP’s national executive meet in Hyderabad. It highlighted many alleged failures — including the failure to bring back black money and give ₹15 lakh to each family, curb corruption, provide jobs to two crore youth, and not being able to double farmers’ income as promised — over the last eight years. Answers sought “The inflation is high, making the lives of poor people difficult. Mr. Modi during the 2014 election campaign said he would bring ‘Acche din’ in the country but it is not to be seen,” Mr. Siddaramaiah alleged. Stuart Broad takes unwanted record after bowling most expensive over in Test cricket history
Stuart Broad has entered the record books for an unwanted reason after bowling the most expensive over in Test cricket history. The England cricketer - whose pub was severely damaged by a fire last month - conceded a whopping 35 runs in one over against India at Edgbaston on Saturday - seven more than the previous record. Moments earlier the 36-year-old had been celebrating after becoming only the sixth bowler ever to take 550 wickets in Test cricket - before his fortunes faded dramatically. Over the course of eight remarkable deliveries - in what is usually a six-ball over - India captain and tailender Jasprit Bumrah hit Broad for 23, including four fours and a six. Broad also served up a wide that went all the way for four and a no-ball that Bumrah top-edged for six. Advertisement Twitter Due to your consent preferences, you’re not able to view this. SL vs Aus, 1st Test | Head, Lyon give Australia 10-wicket win over Sri Lanka
Spinners Travis Head and Nathan Lyon took four wickets each to give Australia a 10-wicket win over Sri Lanka in the first session on the third day of the first cricket Test on Friday. Opting to bat first after winning the toss, Sri Lanka made 212 in its first innings. Australia was still batting in its first innings when play resumed on the third day on 313-8 and fast bowler Asitha Fernando bowled Pat Cummins (26) with a yorker. Fernando later sent an in-swinger to bowl Mitchell Swepson (1) to end Australia's first innings at 321, conceding a 109-run first-innings lead. Sri Lanka made only 113 runs in its second innings leaving Australia five runs to win and David Warner finished the match in four balls. "Our spinners failed to put pressure on the opposition," Sri Lanka coach Chris Silverwood said. "We failed to push them. We found their spinners put pressure on us and made life difficult." Head, bowling his part-time off spinners, took four wickets in the space of 17 … [Read more...] about SL vs Aus, 1st Test | Head, Lyon give Australia 10-wicket win over Sri Lanka
Royal Mail strike – what could happen as union ballots workers to walk out over pay
The summer of disruption could move from the train stations to the postal service as more than 100,000 Royal Mail workers choose whether to join strikes. Right-wing commentators have suggested Britain is returning to the 1970s - a decade when there were three-day weeks to deal with miners and railway workers striking, and a winter of discontent caused by pay row walkouts - due to the number of industrial disputes flaring up. Railway workers crippled the train network three times in a week earlier this month over pay wrangling, while barristers have walked out of courts in protest at their pay. Meanwhile, BA workers at Heathrow have agreed to strike and firefighters are weighing up a below-inflation wage rise offer. Postal workers could become the latest to agree to join what is being dubbed the "summer of discontent" and the largest industrial action seen in a generation. Are postal workers going on strike? The CWU says some Royal Mail workers are being … [Read more...] about Royal Mail strike – what could happen as union ballots workers to walk out over pay
Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission: After tardy start, Karnataka plans full coverage in six months
Karnataka, which ranked low at 14th in India in the number of Ayushman Bharat Health Accounts (ABHAs), has set up an ambitious target of creating the unique health identity cards for the entire population in the next six months. With 800 integrators and over 40 digital health service applications integrated into it, the ABDM aims to digitise healthcare delivery by building an ecosystem that rides on collaboration between the government and the private sector. Eng vs Ind, 5th Test | Tried to disturb bowlers mentally, says Rishabh Pant
His stunning 146 was the cornerstone of India's remarkable recovery on the opening day of the rescheduled fifth Test against England and flamboyant wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant said the secret of his heroics was to "disturb the bowlers mentally". Coming out to bat when India were at a precarious 98 for 5, Pant played a knock for the ages to turn the tables on England and take India to an imposing 338 for 7 at stumps on Friday. His magnificent 111-ball innings had 19 boundaries and four sixes. "In English conditions if a bowler pitches it up, it's important to disturb his rhythm, that's what I feel," the 24-year-old Pant said during the media interaction after the end of day one's play. Be it England pace spearhead James Anderson, who rocked India early on with his 3/52, or skipper Ben Stokes who offered a barrage of short-pitched stuff, Pant looked ridiculously at ease during his blitzkrieg. "I don't try to play unidimensional, rather I try out various shots — sometimes I … [Read more...] about Eng vs Ind, 5th Test | Tried to disturb bowlers mentally, says Rishabh Pant
