Former Wimbledon champion Simona Halep soared into the fourth round of the Championships on Saturday with a commanding 6-4 6-1 victory over Poland’s Magdalena Frech. The 30-year-old Romanian, who returned to the All England Club this year for the first time since winning the grasscourt major in 2019, came into match having beaten Frech in both their previous meetings. Despite a stiff breeze blowing across Court two, Halep started in aggressive fashion to build up a 4-0 lead and although the 92nd-ranked Frech managed to get a break of serve back, it was not enough to stop her opponent from winning the first set. Playing her maiden third-round match at a major, Frech also cancelled out an early break at the start of the second set but Halep regained the lead immediately and celebrated with a clenched fist and repeated slaps on her thigh. Pride in London has returned to the capital for the first time since 2019, celebrating 50 years since the very first march took place in 1972. More than one million people are expected to descend on the capital for the parade, which begins from 12pm on Saturday (2 July). According to the organisers, 30,000 people have registered to join the march from more than 600 LGBT+ community groups. The parade is an “opportunity for expression of celebration, joy and triumph but also the voice to rightly express the continued fight for those injustices and inequalities that exist among us,” Pride in London said. Those marching today will be calling on the UK government to ban conversion therapy for all LGBT+ people, reform the Gender Recognition Act, and provide equal protection for LGBT+ communities against hate crime. Swiss-based Gurit group has established an advanced composite solutions plant at Oragadam at an investment of ₹250 crore on plant and machinery. It was inaugurated by Gurit group chairman Rudolf Hadorn and CEO Mitja Schulz. It is spread over 16 acres of land at Greenbase Industrial and Logistics Park, it said in a statement. The constructed area of the plant is more than 3,80,000 sqft. for composite materials, core kitting, tooling & manufacturing solutions and structural profiles business to serve the wind industry. Gurit Wind Pvt. Ltd. will provide direct employment to 300 people. The current cotton season is expected to end on September 30 with 39.27 lakh bales as closing stock. The Committee on Cotton Production and Consumption had estimated the closing stock at almost 41.27 lakh bales at its meeting held in May. After a meeting on Friday, the Committee said imports were expected to be 15 lakh bales, production 315.43 lakh bales and opening stock 71.84 lakh bales. With this, the total availability for the season was estimated at 402.27 lakh bales. On the consumption side, textile mills (non SSI units) were likely to consume 285 lakh bales against 289 lakh bales the Committee estimated at its meeting in May. With weak demand for yarn, demand for cotton had reduced, industry sources said here. Consumption by SSI units were likely to be 20 lakh bales whereas 16 lakh bales were to be non textile consumption. Exports were estimated at 42 lakh bales, said the Committee. Water from Harangi dam near Kushalnagar in Kodagu was released into the river through the four crest gates on Saturday following an increase in the inflow into the dam due to heavy rains in its catchment area. Madikeri MLA Appachu Ranjan offered ‘bagina’ to the brimming dam and 1,200 cusecs was discharged into the river after opening all four gates of the dam. A flood alert was issued on Friday after the inflow went up in view of heavy downpour in the catchment area. The dam engineers are expected to increase the outflow based on the extent of inflow and therefore the people living on the banks of Cauvery have been asked to move to safer places as a precautionary measure. Speaking to reporters, Mr. Ranjan said he had offered ‘bagina’ to the dam on July 16 last year. India will have 122 new unicorns in the next two to four years and these unicorns currently have a cumulative value of $49 billion, as per Hurun India Future Unicorn Index 2022 released by Hurun Research Institute here on Wednesday. Bengaluru, the start-up capital of the country, alone would add 46 new unicorns, to its existing tally of 33, in the next two to four years. Delhi NCR would add 25 new unicorns, Mumbai 16, Chennai 5, Pune 3 unicorns while the rest are expected to come from 20 other cities, according to the unicorn index. Venture Capital firm Sequoia Capital invested in 39 of these future unicorns followed by Tiger Global which holds stake in 27 of them. The 15th edition of the FIH Women’s World Cup is already underway. Spain hosted Canada in the opening fixture of the tournament. The quadrennial tournament is being co-hosted by two nations, Spain and the Netherlands. This is the first major global tournament in Women’s Hockey since the Tokyo Olympics.
