U.S. midterms bring few changes from social media companies

August 17, 2022 by www.sfgate.com

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Social media companies are offering few specifics as they share their plans for safeguarding the U.S. midterm elections. Platforms like Facebook and Twitter are generally staying the course from the 2020 voting season, which was marred by conspiracies and culminated in the Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol. Video app TikTok, which has soared in popularity since the last election cycle while also cementing its place as a problem spot for misinformation, announced Wednesday it is launching an election center that will help people find voting locations and candidate information. The center will show up on videos about U.S. elections and in the feeds of users who search election-related hashtags. TikTok is also partnering with voting advocacy groups to provide specialized voting information for college students, people who are deaf, military members living overseas and those with past criminal convictions. TikTok, like other platforms, would not … [Read more...] about U.S. midterms bring few changes from social media companies

This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 11 CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — NASA’s new moon rocket arrived at the launch pad Wednesday ahead of its debut flight in less than two weeks. The 322-foot (98-meter) rocket emerged from its mammoth hangar late Tuesday night, drawing crowds of Kennedy Space Center workers. It took nearly 10 hours for the rocket to make the four-mile trip to the pad, pulling up at sunrise. NASA is aiming for an Aug. 29 liftoff for the lunar test flight. No one will be inside the crew capsule atop the rocket, just three mannequins — test dummies swarming with sensors to measure radiation and vibration. The capsule will fly around the moon in a distant orbit for a couple weeks, before heading back for a splashdown in the Pacific. The entire flight should last six weeks. The flight is the first moonshot in NASA's Artemis program. The space agency is … [Read more...] about NASA’s moon rocket moved to launch pad for 1st test flight

We can make the super rich pay their fair share | Opinion

August 17, 2022 by www.newsweek.com

The pandemic brought its fair share of challenges for Americans, including straining household budgets. From spiking unemployment at the start of the pandemic to rising costs this the past year, Memphians tell me every day about the increasing difficulties of stretching their dollars and taking care of their families. Yet even as our challenges have grown, the ultra-wealthy have maintained their jet-setting lifestyles. In fact, billionaires have expanded their fortunes tremendously since the pandemic began. Here in Tennessee, the state's 10 billionaires grew $21 billion , or 85 percent, richer over the first two years of the pandemic. But while billionaires increased their wealth, we were the ones footing the tax bill. Thanks to a skewed tax code that showers tax breaks on those with the greatest means, the average billionaire pays a lower tax rate than middle-class workers . The ultra-wealthy meticulously evade taxes by living off the growing value of their assets, which are … [Read more...] about We can make the super rich pay their fair share | Opinion

August 17, 2022 by www.news18.com

For fourth-grader Leah Rainey, the school day now begins with what her teacher calls an “emotional check-in.” “It’s great to see you. How are you feeling?” chirps a cheery voice on her laptop screen. It asks her to click an emoji matching her state of mind: Happy. Sad. Worried. Angry. Frustrated. Calm. Silly. Tired. Depending on the answer, Leah, 9, gets advice from a cartoon avatar on managing her mood and a few more questions: Have you eaten breakfast? Are you hurt or sick? Is everything OK at home? Is someone at school being unkind? Today, Leah chooses “silly,” but says she struggled with sadness during online learning. At Lakewood Elementary School, all 420 students will start their days the same way this year. The rural Kentucky school is one of thousands across the country using the technology to screen students’ state of mind and alert teachers to anyone struggling. In some ways, this year’s back-to-school season will restore a degree of pre-pandemic normalcy: Most … [Read more...] about New Reports Talk About Whether Schools Are Doing Enough To Help With The Mental Health of Youths
