Last Public Payphone in New York City Removed, Marks End of an Era

May 25, 2022 by www.news18.com

In what is being deemed as the end of an era, New York City has removed its last public payphone this week. The old payphone is now being headed to the Museum of the City of New York. Matthew Fraser, New York’s commissioner of the office of technology and innovation, in an official statement said, “As a native New Yorker, saying goodbye to the last street payphone is bittersweet because of the prominent place they’ve held in the city’s physical landscape for decades.” Speaking about digital evolution, he said that transitioning from the horse and buggy to the automobile and from the automobile to the airplane, “the digital evolution has progressed from payphones to high-speed wifi kiosks to meet the demands of our rapidly changing daily communications need.” Earlier, there were over 6,000 public payphones active throughout New York. The city has been replacing payphones with public Wi-Fi hotspots which can be used for hopping and even charging a cell phone. Termed as LinkNYC stands … [Read more...] about Last Public Payphone in New York City Removed, Marks End of an Era

Gavin Newsom rages at Supreme Court over New York Second Amendment decision

June 23, 2022 by www.sfgate.com

California Gov. Gavin Newsom had some choice words for the United States Supreme Court after the body struck down a New York law that tightly regulated the act of carrying guns outside the home, setting precedent for the repeal of similar laws in California and other progressive states. "A dark day in America," he tweeted . "This is a dangerous decision from a court hell bent on pushing a radical ideological agenda and infringing on the rights of states to protect our citizens from being gunned down in our streets, schools, and churches. Shameful." The justices ruled 6-3 that the New York law, which required concealed-carry applicants to demonstrate a compelling need to carry a firearm outside the home, infringed on a person's right to keep and bear arms under the Second Amendment. While no specific California laws were directly overturned in the court's ruling, many state and local laws are now vulnerable to legal challenges. For example, California requires applicants to … [Read more...] about Gavin Newsom rages at Supreme Court over New York Second Amendment decision

Joe Biden ‘Deeply Disappointed’ by Supreme Court Striking Down Gun Limits in New York

June 23, 2022 by www.breitbart.com

President Joe Biden expressed frustration Thursday with the Supreme Court’s ruling defending private gun ownership in New York. The Supreme Court ruled 6-3 against a New York law requiring “proper cause” to obtain a concealed carry license in the state. “The constitutional right to bear arms in public for self-defense is not ‘a second-class right, subject to an entirely different body of rules than the other Bill of Rights guarantees,'” Justice Clarence Thomas wrote in his majority opinion. Associate Justice Clarence Thomas sits during a group photo at the Supreme Court in Washington, Friday, April 23, 2021 (Erin Schaff/The New York Times via AP, Pool, File). But Biden issued a statement noting he was “deeply disappointed” by the ruling. “This ruling contradicts both common sense and the Constitution and should deeply trouble us all,” he wrote. The president cited the recent mass shootings in Buffalo and Uvalde Texas as an argument to limit gun rights. “[W]e must … [Read more...] about Joe Biden ‘Deeply Disappointed’ by Supreme Court Striking Down Gun Limits in New York

‘Torso killer’ Richard Cottingham charged with 1968 murder of woman at New York shopping mall

June 23, 2022 by news.sky.com

The death of a woman who was found in the car park of a shopping mall five decades ago in New York’s Long Island has been linked to the so-called "Torso Killer". The suspect, Richard Cottingham, who is believed to be one of America's most prolific serial killers, was arraigned Wednesday on a second-degree murder charge in connection with Diane Cusick's 1968 killing. But from a hospital bed in New Jersey, where he's already serving a life sentence for other killings, Cottingham pleaded not guilty. Authorities believe Ms Cusick, 23, left her job at a children's dance school and then stopped at the Green Acres Mall in Nassau County to buy a pair of shoes when Cottingham followed her out. He is then thought to have pretended to be a security guard or police officer, accused her of stealing and then overpowered the 7st (98 lbs) woman, Nassau County Police Detective Captain Stephen Fitzpatrick said. New York couple faces fines after bringing pet raccoon to pet store for food

June 24, 2022 by www.nbcnews.com

A New York man and his girlfriend each face a $500 fine after they brought a pet raccoon to an Erie County pet store for food, officials said. The unidentified couple was charged for unlawfully possessing a wild animal, the state Department of Environmental Conservation said in a news release . The agency noted that it is not only illegal to have wild animals as pets but also dangerous. "Rabies test results for the raccoon were negative. DEC urges the public to leave wild animals alone," the release states. "Once a rabies infection is established, there’s no effective treatment."The pair brought the animal to the store on June 2 so they could pick up food and supplies, according to the agency. A store employee called the authorities. The same day, Environmental Conservation police officers got an "urgent call" to help locate a "potentially rabid raccoon." They were able to track the couple back to a location in Attica in Wyoming County. The couple handed over the … [Read more...] about New York couple faces fines after bringing pet raccoon to pet store for food

Manhattanhenge: New Yorkers Throng to Capture Sun’s Sorcery on Manhattan Streets

June 22, 2022 by www.news18.com

Twice a year, a spot in New York’s Manhattan offers a view into a spectacular sunset. The term used to describe this sunset which is viewed between the two skyscrapers is called Manhattanhenge. Most recently the streets of Manhattan saw a big gathering of people as they all reached out for their smartphones to capture the event. American astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson is often credited for discovering this modern-day phenomenon. Astrophysicist and director of the Hayden Planetarium, Tyson described this event as a special day that comes twice a year, when the setting Sun “aligns precisely with the Manhattan street grid, creating a radiant glow of light across Manhattan’s brick and steel canyons, simultaneously illuminating both the north and south sides of every cross street of the borough’s grid.” You may have noticed that the term Manhattanhenge is a portmanteau of Manhattan and the ancient landmark in England’s Salisbury Plain, the Stonehenge. According to Tyson. The … [Read more...] about Manhattanhenge: New Yorkers Throng to Capture Sun’s Sorcery on Manhattan Streets

Hochul: SCOTUS NY Gun Law Decision Shows ‘Inconsistency’ of the Court — ‘Seems Like a Very Political Agenda’

June 24, 2022 by www.breitbart.com

Friday on CBS’s “Mornings,” New York Gov. Kathy Hochul (D) weighed in on the Supreme Court’s 6-3 decision ruling that her state’s proper cause requirement for concealed carry permits was unconstitutional. Hochul, who described the ruling as “reprehensible,” said the decision showed the “inconsistency of the Supreme Court.” She lamented the court deemed that law unconstitutional while also soon ruling that abortion should be left to the states, as seen in a leaked draft opinion. “We’re protecting our abortion providers from lawsuits brought by someone in another state,” Hochul said of her state’s package of bills providing protections for women seeking an abortion. “A place like Texas, for example — they give people a private right of action so someone else, who’s not even affected, can sue an abortion provider. I wanted to make sure that our providers in New York are protected. We passed that law. Also, to make sure that our providers have the resources they need because there … [Read more...] about Hochul: SCOTUS NY Gun Law Decision Shows ‘Inconsistency’ of the Court — ‘Seems Like a Very Political Agenda’

‘I Got Shot’: New Chilling Footage Captures A Child Pleading For Help During Uvalde Massacre

May 31, 2022 by dailycaller.com

A child pleaded for help on an emergency call inside Robb Elementary School during the shooting that killed 21, including 19 children, according to newly released audio. CNN obtained footage of the recording from an anonymous individual who recorded the call on his Facebook Live, CNN correspondent Nick Valencia said. The audio is reportedly part of radio traffic of Customs and Border Protection, who turned down the audio once they realized the anonymous person could hear it. “Are you injured?” an adult inside the building asked. “I got shot,” a child said. “Where? Where?” the adult asked. The rest of the recording is inaudible. Valencia told hosts Poppy Harlow and Jim Sciutto that the timing of the call is currently unknown and added that it shows there were victims inside that could have been saved if law enforcement took quicker action. Adobe Photoshop is Adding New Authentication Tool to Fight Misinformation

October 20, 2020 by www.news18.com

Adobe is adding a new authentication tool on its photo editing software, Photoshop in a bid to combat misinformation. According to the company, the authentication tool will provide a secure layer of tamper-evident attribution data to photos, including the author’s name, location and edit history that help customers understand the content available online. All the changes made to the image will appear on Photoshop as well as on Adobe-owned art sharing website Behance in a dedicated panel. The new feature will be available to select Photoshop and Behance customers via a beta release in the coming weeks and the company yet to share details about its global rollout. The attribution tool coming to Adobe Photoshop is part of the company’s open-source Content Authenticity Initiative (CAI) that was introduced last year to address the challenges of deepfakes and “other deceptively manipulated content.” The first CIA was launched last year in collaboration Twitter and the New York Times to … [Read more...] about Adobe Photoshop is Adding New Authentication Tool to Fight Misinformation
