Supreme Court strikes New York gun law, expanding gun rights

June 23, 2022 by www.thehindu.com

The Supreme Court said Thursday that Americans have a right to carry guns in public, a major expansion of gun rights. The justices’ 6-3 decision follows a series of recent mass shootings and is expected to ultimately allow more people to legally carry guns on the streets of the nation’s largest cities — including New York, Los Angeles and Boston — and elsewhere. About a quarter of the U.S. population lives in states expected to be affected by the ruling, the high court’s first major gun decision in more than a decade. The ruling comes as Congress is actively working on gun legislation following recent mass shootings in Texas, New York and California. Guns in paradise: Ruling could undo strict Hawaii carry law

June 25, 2022 by www.sfgate.com

This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 29 HONOLULU (AP) — Megan Kau takes occasional weeklong hunting trips to the Hawaiian island of Lanai, where she enjoys watching the sunrise and hearing the distant rustle of deer and mouflon sheep in the tropical wilderness, a rifle ready at her side. As a gun owner, she also goes to shooting ranges several times a year. Those outings are the only times the attorney and Oahu native sees others with guns in this tourist mecca where strict laws make it harder to purchase firearms and restrict carrying loaded guns in public. Thursday’s U.S. Supreme Court ruling overturning New York's concealed weapon law will likely change things in Hawaii, too, where it's now highly unusual to see people carrying loaded weapons in public. Agnipath a Transformative Scheme; We Will Keep Reviewing It: Rajnath Singh

June 25, 2022 by www.news18.com

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Saturday said that the government will keep reviewing the Agnipath military recruitment scheme annually and if any shortcomings and challenges emerge, then it will address them appropriately. The defence minister said the scheme was finalised after around two years of extensive deliberations among key stakeholders and described the new model as "transformative". The scheme, announced on June 14, seeks to recruit youths between the age bracket of 17-and-half years to 21 for only four years with a provision to retain 25 per cent of them for 15 more years. For 2022, the upper age limit has been extended to 23 years. Several parts of India witnessed violent protests against the scheme with the agitators demanding its rollback as the new model does not provide a job guarantee to 75 per cent of the recruits. "Let the scheme be implemented. We will keep reviewing it every year and if we find any shortcomings or challenges, then we will try to address … [Read more...] about Agnipath a Transformative Scheme; We Will Keep Reviewing It: Rajnath Singh

Spider venom may be the new Viagra

March 8, 2011 by www.news18.com

London: Next time you spot a spider in your bedroom, don't panic, as scientists say one of their species may actually help boost a man's libido. A single bite from the Brazilian wandering spider has been shown to have side-effects including four-hour long erections. Now, researchers at the Medical College of Georgia in the US found that the toxins in the arachnid's venom contains a possible breakthrough for erectile dysfunction, the Daily Mail reported. The eight-legged creature -- also known as the armed spider, banana spider or Phoneutria nigriventer -- is found in South and Central America. Dr Kenia Nunes, a physiologist at the college, said: "The venom of the Phoneutria nigriventer spider is a very rich mixture of several molecules. "These molecules are called toxins, and then we have various toxins in this venom with different activity. "Because of this, when a human is bitten by this spider, we can observe many different symptoms including priapism (or persistent … [Read more...] about Spider venom may be the new Viagra

Nolte: Abortion, Gun Rulings Are Civil Rights Victories That Will Save Lives

June 25, 2022 by www.breitbart.com

Overturning Roe v. Wade and declaring New York’s fascist conceal carry law unconstitutional are not only progress for the cause of human and civil rights–they will also save countless innocent lives. It need not be pointed out how this week’s 5-4 Supreme Court decision concerning Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization finally ended the moral and legal atrocity of Roe v. Wade or how it will save lives. The slaughter of innocent, unborn babies will end in any number of states, come under heavy restrictions in others, and likely save millions of lives. Unfortunately, this mass butchering will likely continue in the demonic blue states. Out of defiance, it might even increase. Overall, though, the infanticide numbers will almost certainly decrease. And those numbers are almost too horrific to comprehend. Since Roe became the law of the land in 1973, 63 million innocent babies have been slaughtered. Sixty-three million lives were snuffed out, almost all for … [Read more...] about Nolte: Abortion, Gun Rulings Are Civil Rights Victories That Will Save Lives

Department Of Justice Denounces Supreme Court Ruling On Guns

The Department of Justice (DOJ) released a statement Thursday disagreeing with the Supreme Court’s ruling in a case involving a New York concealed carry law. “We respectfully disagree with the Court’s conclusion that the Second Amendment forbids New York’s reasonable requirement that individuals seeking to carry a concealed handgun must show that they need to do so for self-defense,” the statement read. Protests and celebrations as Supreme Court overturns Roe v. Wade: Live updates

June 25, 2022 by www.nbcnews.com

Protests continued in cities across the country Saturday after the Supreme Court's decision to overturn the landmark Roe v. Wade ruling that had guaranteed the right to abortion in the United States. As states began to enact abortion bans and clinics stopped offering the procedure, large crowds gathered in cities such as New York, Los Angeles and Atlanta, some jubilant, others dismayed at the decision that stripped away women’s constitutional right to abortion. Both sides predicted the fight over abortion would continue. Key highlights: President Joe Biden called it a “sad day” for the U.S. and said it would be up to voters in November to select candidates who would protect a host of rights — not just abortion but also marriage equality and the right to contraception. Centrist Sens. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., and Susan Collins, R-Maine, suggested they were misled by Justices Brett Kavanaugh and Neil Gorsuch, two key votes in the decision to overturn Roe. Rafael Nadal Missing Old Sparring Partner Roger Federer on Wimbledon Return

June 25, 2022 by www.news18.com

Rafa Nadal returns to Wimbledon for the first time in three years but it will feel a little odd for the Spaniard who, for the first time at the All England Club, will not have sparring partner Roger Federer for company. Their epic rivalry includes three successive Wimbledon finals from 2006 — the first two won by Federer and the last by Nadal in unforgettable fashion in 2008. Federer played in the juniors at Wimbledon in 1998 and has been back every year since, winning a record eight titles and establishing himself as the king of the lawns. But the 40-year-old will be absent this year as the 36-year-old Nadal seeks to continue his quest for the calendar year Grand Slam, having won the Australian Open and French Open to take his haul of majors to a record 22. Federer’s absence because of a knee injury that has sidelined him for a year will leave Wimbledon a little empty. Nadal acknowledges that without the Swiss raising the bar, his own achievements might not have been … [Read more...] about Rafael Nadal Missing Old Sparring Partner Roger Federer on Wimbledon Return

Williams, 40, limped out of her first-round match last year at the grasscourt Grand Slam — where she has claimed seven of her 23 majors — following a leg injury. “I don’t know. I didn’t retire. I needed to heal physically, mentally. Yeah, I had no plans, to be honest. I just didn’t know when I would come back. I didn’t know how I would come back,” Williams told reporters.
