Actor Jay Ellis remembers watching the 1986 movie “Top Gun” at an Air Force base in Austin, Texas. He was only 8 or 9 years old, and the blockbuster made him dream about becoming a fighter pilot. Ellis wanted to be part of that military community. Now, he plays Navy fighter pilot Payback in the anticipated sequel “Top Gun: Maverick,” which releases nationwide Friday and in select theaters starting Tuesday. He said he sees the film as a way to say thank you to the real men and women who inspired him as a boy. “I grew up around aviation, and I think about the sacrifice that so many men and women take — they give, rather — just for us to be safe,” he said. “I think we all wrap our arms around this community and we protect it so much. And we understand the responsibility to be amazing on-screen for these folks.” Jay Ellis gets real about pulling midair stunts in ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ May 23, 2022 06:09 Both of Ellis' grandfathers, his … [Read more...] about ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ stars hope the film’s Black pilots will inspire a new generation of fans

How a mysterious Putin ally, the ‘Russian Gatsby,’ moves his billions
On the day Russia invaded Ukraine , Vladimir Putin summoned 37 of his country’s most powerful business leaders to the Kremlin. The Russian president told them the incursion had been “a necessary measure” and asked them “to be understanding of what is going on.” Russia’s stock exchange had just closed at a 33 percent loss, wiping out an estimated $71 billion in wealth, with a raft of new sanctions from the United States and the European Union already in effect and more on the way. For many oligarchs in the room, it would be their first taste of international financial restrictions. But for others, like Suleiman Kerimov, sanctions were nothing new. The enigmatic, Ferrari-driving billionaire and his family have gone to great lengths to shield their assets, documents suggest, an effort that would have helped to insulate him when he and other Russian elites were sanctioned by the U.S. in 2018 for benefitting from the country’s “malign activity around the globe.” … [Read more...] about How a mysterious Putin ally, the ‘Russian Gatsby,’ moves his billions
Daily “Quordle” for May 24: #120 answer and hints to solve puzzle
Quordle, often dubbed " Wordle on steroids, " is considered to be a more intimidating version of the famous brain teaser that has taken the internet by storm. Players searching for more of a challenge are drawn to Quordle , which was created in January, and gives users nine attempts to guess four unique five-letter words daily—rather than Wordle's six attempts for a single five-letter word. Similar to The New York Times ' word game and internet sensation Wordle , a green tile in Quordle indicates that a player has guessed a letter in the right place, a yellow tile means a player has chosen a letter that features in the answers of the day, but in the wrong place. Finally, a gray tile means that the letter is not in the answer at all. The daily brain teaser works differently to Wordle in that users enter their guess for all four words simultaneously. Players find it helpful to pick a word that has as many vowels as possible in their first guess. Quordle Origins … [Read more...] about Daily “Quordle” for May 24: #120 answer and hints to solve puzzle

Wordle is a word game that tests veteran players and newcomers who all try to solve the puzzle within six tries; fortunately, Newsweek is on hand to help those who might want some help to work it out. The rules of the puzzle game are simple and follow a color-coded system that players use in order to work out the five-letter word. In the game, green tiles show the player has chosen the correct letter and that it is in the right place, a yellow tile indicates the letter is right but in the wrong place while a gray tile means the letter is not in the word. Luckily, Wordle resets each day, which means those players who failed to solve the puzzle only need to wait a few hours before they can try again. Today’s Wordle word of the day: #338 answer and hints – May 23
Wordle is the viral word game open to all to solve for just one day on The New York Times website. Wordle's aim is very basic, with the puzzle demanding participants figure out a five-letter word in six guesses or fewer. Working out how to give oneself an edge in Wordle is easy; requiring people to simply focus only on the tiles' color while guessing the solution. When a tile turns gray following each guess, it suggests this particular letter won't feature anywhere in the answer. If the specific letter is included in the word, but in another position, the tile turns a mellow yellow color. But if you strike gold and the tile turns green, you can rest easy in the knowledge the letter is not only included in the word, but it's also sitting in exactly the right place. Wordle players have every right to feel smug should they arrive at the correct answer, and the viral game caters to this sense of achievement by tracking people's vital statistics. The puzzle not … [Read more...] about Today’s Wordle word of the day: #338 answer and hints – May 23
You Can Get a Quarantine Haircut if You Know the Right Barber—and Have the Money
As the new socially distant reality drags on, hair has become a major topic of conversation on Zoom dates and phone calls. Videos of at-home buzz cuts are inescapable on social media. Celebrities from Ricky Martin to Elle Fanning have dyed their hair pink. Anderson Cooper revealed on air that he accidentally gave himself a bald spot. But not everyone’s feeling the DIY spirit. As cabin fever—and split ends—reach an apex, barbers have begun to offer house calls for those unwilling to pick up scissors themselves. Last month, The Washington Post described a growing “black market of hairstylists” ready to “risk it all” with such visits, but those who spoke to The Daily Beast are not trying to hide their services. Many have taken to advertise on Craigslist and Instagram, charging a bit more than usual for appointments. It helps them keep food on the table and rent paid as salons remain shuttered. “As a professional barber [before coronavirus], I took the risk of getting … [Read more...] about You Can Get a Quarantine Haircut if You Know the Right Barber—and Have the Money
Former Brooklyn Dodgers catcher, Mets coach Joe Pignatano dies at 92
As a big leaguer, Joe Pignatano had a career that was more noteworthy than notable: He played in the last game at Ebbets Field, he homered off three future Hall of Famers and he hit into a triple play with his final swing in the majors. It was out in the bullpen at Shea Stadium, where he tended relief pitchers and tomatoes for the 1969 Miracle Mets, where Pignatano’s legacy really grew. “He was fairly committed to taking care of his tomatoes,” former Mets pitcher Jim McAndrew told The Associated Press. “It was Joe’s thing,” he said. “A lot of love and effort and TLC.” Pignatano, who reached the majors as a catcher with his hometown Brooklyn Dodgers and became a longtime coach, died Monday at 92. The New York Mets said Pignatano died in Naples, Florida, at a nursing home. He had been suffering from dementia. Pignatano had been the last living coach from the 1969 Mets, who made a remarkable run under manager Gil Hodges to reach the World Series and then startled … [Read more...] about Former Brooklyn Dodgers catcher, Mets coach Joe Pignatano dies at 92
Teachers Unions ‘Biggest Budget Winner’ in California’s Record-setting $98 Billion Surplus
Teachers unions are the “biggest budget winner” in California’s projected $98 billion budget surplus, the Wall Street Journal reports, seeing funding for public schools rise even as enrollment has plummeted thanks to closures during the pandemic. Earlier this month, Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) announced a record-breaking surplus, the result of unexpectedly high tax revenues and federal bailout funds from President Joe Biden’s America Rescue Plan, sold as an urgent rescue for blue states. The Journal noted : Mr. Newsom revealed the giant surplus in his updated $301 billion budget plan. State coffers have swelled by 40% during the pandemic thanks to Congress’s Covid spending and a capital-gains revenue gusher from surging asset prices. California’s surplus alone is bigger than the budget of every state besides Texas, Florida and New York. … The biggest budget winner as usual is the teachers unions. Public schools will get $128 billion, a 25% increase over pre-pandemic … [Read more...] about Teachers Unions ‘Biggest Budget Winner’ in California’s Record-setting $98 Billion Surplus
Who’s the villain in “Thor: Love and Thunder”? Meet Christian Bale’s Gorr
Thor: Love and Thunder has released a new trailer that gives Marvel fans their first glimpse of new villain Gorr the God Butcher, played by Oscar-winner Christian Bale. The Thor 4 trailer reveals Gorr as a villain with ashy grey skin, a scarred face and white robes. Gorr the God Butcher is a relatively recent addition to the Thor comics, but has made an impact in his first decade. Selecting Bale as the character continues the tradition of casting Oscar-winning actors to play Thor bad guys, following Cate Blanchett's turn in Ragnarok . Here's what we know about Gorr the God Butcher from the comics, and what the makers of the movie have said about their version of the character. Who is Gorr the God Butcher? In the comics, there is a dark existential question at the … [Read more...] about Who’s the villain in “Thor: Love and Thunder”? Meet Christian Bale’s Gorr
