The mass shooting of Black grocery shoppers in Buffalo, New York, on Saturday follows a string of similar attacks. Gunmen have targeted worshippers at synagogues and mosques and temples and Bible study; they have opened fire on summer camps and people at festivals. We know the names of these places: Charleston; El Paso; Poway; Pittsburgh; Oak Creek; Christchurch, New Zealand. We know the names of the shooters, too, although I won’t list them here, because adding to their notoriety deepens the problem. Some of us also know by now that although we might think these are attacks on specific victim groups—and they are attacks on Black, Jewish, Islamic, Sikh, Latino, and immigrant populations—the aforementioned examples have all been part of one movement. In each event, a white-power activist was the perpetrator. Several of the assailants wrote extensively about their motivations in manifestos that outlined a coherent political ideology. And in the United States, they have been backed … [Read more...] about White Power, White Violence

Cinematographer Dani Sanchez-Lopez: Sai Pallavi emerging from the tent in camouflage clothing is a powerful moment
Dani Sanchez-Lopez was barely seven when he had made up his mind that he would grow up and be a part of cinema. His initial fascination was for acting until he discovered that actors spoke lines written by others. He grew interested in writing, direction and editing and got an introduction to all of these. It was while studying filmmaking at Chapman University, California, that he realised he enjoyed narrating stories visually. He had found his calling in cinematography. What Dani, of Spanish origin, did not foresee was that he would take up projects in India and work in Telugu cinema. His collaboration with director Nag Ashwin for the Savitri biopic Mahanati had him experimenting with visual textures that complemented every decade of the story. Post Mahanati , Dani came on board for director Gunashekhar’s Hiranya , starring Rana Daggubati as Hiranyakashipu. The project is in the works and, in the meantime, he was roped in for Virata Parvam . Incidentally, his first Indian … [Read more...] about Cinematographer Dani Sanchez-Lopez: Sai Pallavi emerging from the tent in camouflage clothing is a powerful moment
What Facebook and Google Can Learn From America’s First Major News Hoax
In the age of the platform, how can anybody be sure that the news they read is true? Last week, lies, hoaxes, and rumors prevailed on Facebook and Google following the mass murder in Las Vegas. The sites promoted stories claiming that the killer was a Rachel Maddow fan, or an ISIS follower—both false. As gatekeepers of valuable information, the platforms failed , The Atlantic ’s Alexis Madrigal wrote. This was a familiar story. After the 2016 election, Russian propaganda and false memes on Facebook elevated “fake news” in the national lexicon. Today, with two-thirds of Americans getting their news from editor-free social media sites , the veracity of news stories is, itself, a major news story. For Facebook and Google, the rise of misinformation is a Frankenstein monster unleashed by their own technology. How can these companies rein in their dangerous creation? The briefest and most honest answer today is it won’t be easy. But some key lessons of the intractability of bad … [Read more...] about What Facebook and Google Can Learn From America’s First Major News Hoax
Giuliani Sounds Like He’s Ready to Put His Kid on Mount Rushmore
In a virtual press conference Thursday attended by fewer than 30 people—including the PR consultants hosting the event—former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani compared his son, who is hoping to be elected New York’s GOP candidate for governor next week, to Donald Trump, Teddy Roosevelt, Ronald Reagan, and…himself. Giuliani, who appeared to encounter brief technical issues when logging onto the sparsely populated Zoom meeting, described Andrew , 36, as “tough as nails,” boasting that his boy had been endorsed by Trump cronies and convicted felon Mike Flynn and Steve Bannon, who was charged with felony fraud in 2021 but pardoned by Trump hours before the ex-president left office. However, Giuliani also said that Trump’s endorsement could potentially be detrimental to Andrew’s already slim chances, claiming that Trump has withheld his blessing out of his own benevolence. In rambling remarks that focused primarily on his own accomplishments running New York City, Giuliani took a … [Read more...] about Giuliani Sounds Like He’s Ready to Put His Kid on Mount Rushmore
10-day civil rights march from NYC to D.C. marks one year since deadly Charlottesville rally
Civil rights protesters are launching into the first day of a week-long march from New York City to Washington, D.C., on Friday afternoon to mark one year since the deadly Charlottesville, Virginia, rallies erupted. New York civil rights leader Hawk Newsome, who is leading the Agape march, told Newsweek the march will hit 10 cities and six states over a 10-day period. "Nothing has changed in the last year," said Newsome, who is also the president of Black Lives Matter of Greater New York, an unofficial chapter of the movement. "Things have actually gotten worse. That's why we believe that a change in strategy is necessary," Newsome said. The civil rights leader said he wanted to spread a message of "love" with the Agape march to counter the hate espoused by white supremacists during the "Unite the Right" rally that occurred last August 11 and 12 and resulted in the death of counter-protester Heather Heyer. Agape love "Agape," a Greek word for love, was "central" to Martin … [Read more...] about 10-day civil rights march from NYC to D.C. marks one year since deadly Charlottesville rally

Biden administration moves to expand Title IX protections
The Biden administration proposed a dramatic overhaul of campus sexual assault rules on Thursday, acting to expand protections for LGBTQ students, bolster the rights of victims and widen colleges' responsibilities in addressing sexual misconduct. The proposal, announced on the 50th anniversary of the Title IX women's rights law, is intended to replace a set of controversial rules issued during the Trump administration by Education Secretary Betsy DeVos. President Joe Biden's education secretary, Miguel Cardona, said Title IX has been “instrumental” in fighting sexual assault and violence in education. “As we celebrate the 50th anniversary of this landmark law, our proposed changes will allow us to continue that progress and ensure all our nation’s students — no matter where they live, who they are, or whom they love — can learn, grow, and thrive in school," he said. The proposal is almost certain to be challenged by conservatives, and it is expected to lead to new legal … [Read more...] about Biden administration moves to expand Title IX protections
