In his leaked draft Supreme Court opinion, Justice Samuel Alito argues that overturning Roe v. Wade would allow “women on both sides of the abortion issue to seek to affect the legislative process.” If women in a post-Roe era don’t like state laws that restrict abortion access, or laws that preserve the right to have an abortion, Alito envisions a world in which they can step up and change them. Women can vote, he pointed out, and often do so in higher numbers than men. They can lobby and run for office. But advocates for voting access and civil rights say that Alito’s depiction does not account for the parts of the country, particularly in the South, where laws make it harder for the poor and voters of color to cast their ballots, and where racially polarized voting can make it more difficult for abortion rights candidates to gain ground. Vatican expresses concern over Cardinal Zen’s arrest for ties to pro-democracy fund
The Vatican has expressed concern after 90-year-old outspoken Cardinal Joseph Zen was arrested last week in Hong Kong on charges he had endangered China's national security. The humanitarian activist and religious freedom fighter previously served as bishop of Hong Kong from 2002 to 2009. He was detained along with four others in connection with his role as administrator of the 612 Humanitarian Relief Fund, which supported pro-democracy demonstrations by paying for the legal and medical expenses of protesters. "The Holy See has learned with concern the news of Cardinal Zen's arrest and is following the evolution of the situation with extreme attention," Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni said when asked about Zen's arrest by reporters in Rome. Hong Kong police said Zen had been involved with "collusion with foreign forces" for his role with the fund, which aided protesters starting in 2019. Officials said last year they had embarked on a probe into the fund for possible … [Read more...] about Vatican expresses concern over Cardinal Zen’s arrest for ties to pro-democracy fund
The Right’s Obsession With White Birth Rates Inspired the Buffalo Terrorist
When suspected Buffalo terrorist Payton Gendron began shooting Black patrons at the Tops Grocery on Saturday afternoon, he wasn’t just fitted in cosplay military attire and armed with a semi-automatic weapon , he was also armed with the mainstreamed philosophies of the neo-fascist Republican Party . In today’s conservative media and political ecosystems, white men are fed a steady diet of fear that they are being “replaced” and must “take their country back.” These are the two phrases regularly echoed by Fox News and former President Donald Trump . One of the tenants of replacement theory is the fear over white women not having enough babies. The patriarchal traditionalists of the right blame this in part on feminism, for letting such women believe they have the right to earn their own careers rather than just be white, Christian baby-making machines at their men's disposal. How did replacement theory make its way from the fringes to the mainstream? With the help of the … [Read more...] about The Right’s Obsession With White Birth Rates Inspired the Buffalo Terrorist
Fox News’ Tucker Carlson under fresh scrutiny after Buffalo mass shooting
Fox News personality Tucker Carlson is facing intense scrutiny from extremism experts, media watchdogs and progressive activists who say there is a link between the top-rated host’s “great replacement” rhetoric and the apparent mindset of the suspect in the weekend’s deadly rampage in Buffalo, New York. The white suspect accused of killing 10 people and wounding three others Saturday at a supermarket in a predominantly Black neighborhood apparently wrote a “manifesto” espousing the white supremacist “great replacement” conspiracy theory — elements of which Carlson has pushed on his weeknight show. The theory baselessly holds that a cabal of Jewish people and Democratic elites are plotting to “replace” white Americans with people of color through immigration policies, higher birth rates and other social transformations. The idea circulated on the far-right fringes before moving to the mainstream of conservative media. “Tucker Carlson has made comments that directly … [Read more...] about Fox News’ Tucker Carlson under fresh scrutiny after Buffalo mass shooting
