Labour MP Rosena Allin-Khan has has told Parliament of her family’s heartbreak when they feared her dad was being mistreated in a care home. The MP said her father was found “bloodied, bruised, and unconscious in suspicious circumstances” in a home they had been told was safe, with no explanation for how he got these injuries. She said: “The final nail in the coffin, and the point of no return, was when we found my father unconscious on the floor, with blood on the walls and the floor, and a carer’s set of keys left next to him. “Following this, he spent one month in hospital.” ( Image: Steve Bainbridge) Her struggle to get answers has left her worried for others in the same situation. “If two young professionals can endure what happened in the following months in pursuit of answers I fear deeply for the elderly in our community, such as the 80-year-old woman who herself is frail, who is caring for her husband with dementia, and who is too fearful to speak out.” … [Read more...] about Rosena Allin-Khan MP describes finding her dad bruised and bleeding in a care home

Dangerous Criminal Deportations Hit All-Time Low due to Legal Challenges
Deportations of rapists, murderers and burglars have fallen to an all-time low thanks to legal challenges based on European human rights law. Legal challenges leveraging human rights law are allegedly preventing the deportation of extremely dangerous criminals from the UK, with the number of Category A felons being removed from Britain reportedly falling to all-time lows as a result of the trend. It comes as Britain struggles to enforce a whole host of other immigration reforms, with the country’s government failing to remove its first batch of illegal migrants to Rwanda thanks to a ruling from the European Court of Human Rights. According to Home Office data seen by The Telegraph , only 956 of the highest category migrant criminals were deported from the UK last year. This marks a sizable reduction in the number of deportations over the previous year, peaking at 2,555 in 2016, a trend the publication puts down to foreign criminals using human rights law to legally … [Read more...] about Dangerous Criminal Deportations Hit All-Time Low due to Legal Challenges

Surge in Ukrainians who fled after the invasion returning home, data shows
Ukrainians who left the country to escape the war with Russia are increasingly making their way back as the fighting enters its fifth month. More than 8 million Ukrainians, out of the prewar population of 44 million, left their homes and crossed into neighboring countries such as Poland and Romania to seek safety after the invasion. Since mid-May, that count has been particularly close, per an NBC News analysis. “We came back because we really wanted to go home,” said Julia Fedosiuk, an attorney from Kyiv who returned to Ukraine earlier this month after spending more than three months in Poland. She fled the capital Feb. 25, the day after Russia invaded. For Fedosiuk, 37, leaving her home country was a “forced measure” to keep her children, Ivan and Vera, safe, but she said she always knew they would return home. Kiszla: Welcome home, Stanley! 500,000 Avalanche fans raise Cup to the rebirth of Denver.
Welcome home, Stanley. “This is for you, Denver. We (bleeping) love you!” captain Gabe Landeskog declared to a crowd of 500,000 spilling out of Civic Center Park as rain began to fall on a summer day when the Avalanche marched the Stanley Cup through town. Nobody loves a victory parade more than Denver. But know what was so cool about this particular Thursday in June? It was a love letter to a city in need of a big hug. The Avs brought life back to a downtrodden city that has felt abandoned since the outset of COVID-19. Nathan MacKinnon snuggled a baby to his fuzzy face. Cale Makar ran down the street exchanging high-fives. Artturi Lehkonen drank a toast from his own shoe. Raise a Cup to the rebirth of Denver, y’all. “You want a beer?” Tivis Alexander asked me at 8:04 a.m., shortly after he plopped a chair down at a prime spot on the parade route and cranked up “All the Small Things” on his cellphone. “If you’re not a beer guy, I have gin and whiskey in this cooler.” … [Read more...] about Kiszla: Welcome home, Stanley! 500,000 Avalanche fans raise Cup to the rebirth of Denver.
