Mary Trump, a political commentator and the niece of former President Donald Trump , issued a warning on Friday to Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg as he faces continued attacks from her uncle. Bragg and his office are currently leading a long-term investigation into allegations of Trump's involvement in a 2016 plan to pay $130,000 in "hush money" to adult film star Stormy Daniels , in exchange for her staying quiet about an affair the two allegedly had a decade prior. Recent moves have indicated to legal experts that Bragg is nearing a criminal indictment against Trump for falsifying business records pertaining to the payment, which would be the first such indictment brought against a former president in American history. Trump, for his part, has denied that the affair with Daniels ever happened and has consistently attacked the legitimacy of the Manhattan district attorney's investigation, accusing Bragg of being a politically motivated "rogue" prosecutor. Russian brigade destroyed and reconstituted up to 8 times after losses: ISW
Russia's 155th Naval Infantry Brigade has been "destroyed and reconstituted as many as eight times" since Moscow's invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022, according to a new report. The claim was made by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), a Washington D.C.-based think tank, in its update on the Ukraine conflict published on Friday. Russian troops are continuing to assault the Donbas town of Bakhmut. They have suffered huge casualties in trying to seize it since August 2022, amidst growing speculation that the Ukrainian military is preparing for a major counter-offensive . Russian efforts to seize Vuhledar, a small town to the southwest of Donetsk, are also continuing, with the 155th Naval Infantry Brigade involved in the battle. However, according to the ISW, the operation has been sharply criticized by Russian military bloggers, or milbloggers, who generally support the war but have sometimes been critical of the tactics used. "The milbloggers claimed that … [Read more...] about Russian brigade destroyed and reconstituted up to 8 times after losses: ISW
Leaked Speech Excerpts Show a Hillary Clinton at Ease With Wall Street
In lucrative paid speeches that Hillary Clinton delivered to elite financial firms but refused to disclose to the public, she displayed an easy comfort with titans of business, embraced unfettered international trade and praised a budget-balancing plan that would have required cuts to Social Security, according to documents posted online Friday by WikiLeaks. The tone and language of the excerpts clash with the fiery liberal approach she used later in her bitter primary battle with Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont and could have undermined her candidacy had they become public. Mrs. Clinton comes across less as a firebrand than as a technocrat at home with her powerful audience, willing to be critical of large financial institutions but more inclined to view them as partners in restoring the country’s economic health. In the excerpts from her paid speeches to financial institutions and corporate audiences, Mrs. Clinton said she dreamed of “open trade and open borders” throughout … [Read more...] about Leaked Speech Excerpts Show a Hillary Clinton at Ease With Wall Street
“It’s a good investment”: Young couple buys and renovates old laundromat
One couple's journey to renovate a tired laundromat has captured viral attention as they finally opened their new and improved community hub. Erin Carpenter, 30, and her husband Jonathan, 33, have been renovating properties for years, and while on the hunt for their next project stumbled on a laundromat in their hometown of Charleston, South Carolina. "A laundromat was never really on my radar personally, but Jon is a very smart entrepreneur and businessman, he's always been interested in the concept of a laundromat," Carpenter told Newsweek . Married in June 2020, the couple had their own experience of using laundromats during their 4-month honeymoon living on the road in an RV: "We worked remotely, so we sometimes needed to work from laundromats. We took so many photos of them," said Carpenter. "They were places we spent a lot of time and there aren't a lot that are cozy and comfortable." In July 2022, the couple purchased the building in Charleston which had been a … [Read more...] about “It’s a good investment”: Young couple buys and renovates old laundromat
‘Powerful Propaganda Tool’: Bill Maher Panelists React To TikTok Ban Proposals
TikTok is a “powerful propaganda tool” that should be banned, a panelist on “Real Time With Bill Maher” said Friday night, calling the Chinese-owned app “a defense threat.” “Imagine a brain jack inserted into the neural network of two-thirds of our youth under the age of 25, who spend more time on TikTok than every other media source combined,” said Scott Galloway, a professor of marketing at New York University. “And then imagine how easy it would be to put your thumb on the scale of anti-American content and recognize that they would be stupid not to elegantly, insidiously, covertly, raise a generation of American civil, nonprofit, military, government leaders, day by day, minute by minute, who just feel a little shittier about America.” (RELATED: ‘He Won’t Protect America’: Gov. Noem Predicts Biden Won’t Sign Ban On TikTok) “If we had that tool with China, we would do the exact same thing,” Galloway continued. “This is a defense threat, it should absolutely be banned.” … [Read more...] about ‘Powerful Propaganda Tool’: Bill Maher Panelists React To TikTok Ban Proposals

In a Roman Tomb, ‘Dead Nails’ Reveal an Occult Practice
When it came to the treatment of diseases, the ancient Romans had no shortage of magical remedies, several of which involved iron nails. To cure epilepsy, the first-century historian Pliny the Elder advised driving a nail into the ground at the spot where the afflicted person’s head lay at the start of the seizure. The Romans hammered nails into doors to avert plagues and pounded coffin nails into thresholds to keep nightmares at bay. Nails from tombs and crucifixions were sometimes even worn around the neck as talismans against fevers, malaria and evil spells. Recently, archaeologists excavated an unusual set of talismanic nails from a mountaintop necropolis on the outskirts of Sagalassos in southwestern Turkey. In an early Roman imperial tomb, 41 broken nails were found scattered among the cremated remains of an adult male who had lived in the second century A.D. and was buried in situ. Twenty-five of the nails were headless and deliberately bent at right angles; the others were … [Read more...] about In a Roman Tomb, ‘Dead Nails’ Reveal an Occult Practice
