"We want to play in the NBA Finals," Brett Brown told reporters on the first day of training camp Saturday, laying out the team's goal for the upcoming season. If you were expecting the head coach to come out and dial back expectations after Joel Embiid named the Finals as his goal on media day, think again.Aspirational thinking is an organizational habit at this point. The Sixers expected last year's playoff push before most were prepared to factor them into that picture, their stars talk of winning MVPs and Defensive Player of the Year awards, and their recent GM hire is on some level a swing for the fences, a chance on an up-and-comer many in their position would not have taken.Brown has been to the promised land of the Finals before as an assistant, and he knows exactly what it takes to get there. From his view, that means the Sixers have to start establishing expectations and habits now in order to make it happen."As I've said to you, we feel we could have played in the NBA … [Read more...] about Sixers training camp notes: Brett Brown sets NBA Finals goal for his team
By Tim Reynolds Published 3:36 pm PDT, Friday, September 21, 2018 NBA Commissioner Adam Silver wants all teams to hire more women, especially in leadership and supervisory positions, and is urging them to take some of the mandates that the Dallas Mavericks must now adhere to as an impetus to improve working conditions within their organizations. Silver, in a memo sent to all teams Friday and obtained by the Associated Press, also asked teams to thoroughly review the report that was released this week about the Mavericks. The league stopped short of ordering the 29 other clubs to change their policies, though Silver’s wishes were very clear. “Use this opportunity to make changes and create a dialogue within your organizations about workplace policies, procedures and respectful conduct,” Silver wrote. Silver is expected to speak more about his wishes for NBA clubs and improving workplace conditions later Friday. The league asked clubs to have what they … [Read more...] about NBA commissioner’s memo: Hire more women, improve workplace conditions
The Sixers rather infamously struck out in their quest to go "star hunting" this offseason, but another opportunity to bring in a big-name player may have just risen from nothing. Minnesota Timberwolves star Jimmy Butler has reportedly requested a trade following a meeting with head coach/GM Tom Thibodeau, following an offseason of speculation about his satisfaction with the organization. The reasons for Butler's request seem to center around his relationship with the young players Minnesota has chosen to build their future around, Andrew Wiggins and Karl-Anthony Towns. Towns and Butler have been at the center of rampant reports and rumors this summer, with insiders painting a picture of discontent between the two best players on the Wolves. As part of a video interview conducted earlier this week, The Athletic's Shams Charania suggested Towns had gone as far as to delay a decision on signing a max extension until the Butler situation was resolved. Other reporters, including Wolves … [Read more...] about NBA Trade Rumors: Should Sixers explore a deal for Wolves forward Jimmy Butler?
By Ron Kroichick Published 12:41 pm PDT, Thursday, September 13, 2018 Sports Illustrated released its annual ranking of the NBA’s top 100 players on Thursday — and in a shocking development, the list is littered with Warriors players. Imagine that. Golden State placed two players in the top three ... and three in the top 13 ... and four in the top 22. No, this is not terribly surprising for a team that has won three championships in the past four years. Kevin Durant was No. 2, followed by Stephen Curry at No. 3, Draymond Green at No. 13 and Klay Thompson at No. 22. And if you’re wondering about the Warriors’ presumptive fifth starter — at least when newcomer DeMarcus Cousins recovers from his torn Achilles tendon — he ranked No. 68, according to SI. “If healthy, Cousins would have placed in the top 25, but SI’s Top 100 is a one-year exercise,” Ben Golliver writes in the capsule on Cousins, “and this ranking … [Read more...] about Warriors’ Durant, Curry rank 2-3 in SI list of top NBA players
