SACRAMENTO — State lawmakers on Thursday approved legislation that would allow some Californians with criminal convictions to have those records sealed if they maintain a clean record, a move cheered by criminal justice reform advocates and harshly criticized by law enforcement. Sen. Maria Elena Durazo, a Los Angeles Democrat who wrote Senate Bill 731, said sealing the records would remove burdens on previously incarcerated individuals who face discrimination once they reenter society, including when applying for jobs and places to live. Because California law keeps criminal records public, even long after a person’s sentence ends, those convictions often surface during background checks. “About 75% of formerly incarcerated individuals are still unemployed after a year of their release ,” Durazo said. “So something’s wrong there. We expect them to get back on their feet, but we’re not allowing them the resources to get jobs and [have] careers.” The Senate approved the bill … [Read more...] about A bill that would seal certain criminal records could open doors for millions of Californians

Mumbai Records 975 Covid-19 Cases, Highest in 47 Days
Mumbai on Wednesday recorded 975 Covid-19 cases, the highest since July 1 (978), and a 12 per cent daily positive rate suggesting an increase in transmission. The city saw a nearly 100 per cent jump in cases on Wednesday as compared to Tuesday, accounting for 55 per cent of the cases in the state as well. Dr Mangala Gomare, BMC’s executive health officer said, “there is clearly a surge again in the city and we are monitoring it closely,” adding that a combination of factors could be contributing to the rise. “There is the mingling of people due to festivities, the incessant rain and the rapid emergence of newer variants every few weeks,” Dr Gomare told the Times of India . The city may have to learn to live with rises and falls in cases as Covid becomes endemic. As per the last genome sequencing, Omicron variants BA.2.74 , BA.2.75 and BA.2.76 were found in over 65 percent samples in Mumbai. While state experts have said that BA.2.75 could be spreading faster than other … [Read more...] about Mumbai Records 975 Covid-19 Cases, Highest in 47 Days
California advances broadest US law sealing criminal records
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California would have what proponents call the nation's most sweeping law to seal criminal records if Gov. Gavin Newsom signs legislation sent to him Thursday by state legislators. The bill would automatically seal conviction and arrest records for most ex-offenders who are not convicted of another felony for four years after completing their sentences and any parole or probation. Records of arrests that don't bring convictions also would be sealed. It would take effect in July, and excludes those convicted of serious and violent felonies, and felonies requiring sex offender registration. Proponents say about 8 million Californians have a criminal or arrest record, or about one of every five state residents. A criminal record can trigger nearly 5,000 legal restrictions in California, many of which can limit job opportunities as well as the ability to get housing and educational opportunities, supporters said. They estimate that 70 million people … [Read more...] about California advances broadest US law sealing criminal records

Met Police officer tells mum ‘I’d like to search you’ in creepy phone call she recorded
A mum was left terrified after a serving Met Police officer made a series of creepy comments - including telling her he would "love to conduct a search on her". PC Andrew Turner made inappropriate remarks about 28-year-old Marwa Mohammed's body, told her he "really liked" her and asked if she had “enough Nando's for two”. He also told the mum he "would have loved to conduct a search on her in custody" in a phone call that she recorded because she was so sickened by his conduct. The officer was slapped with a final warning after a misconduct panel ruled his actions were "inappropriate and fell far below the standards expected". But Marwa says she is “shocked” that PC Turner was allowed to keep his job and she has seen him on patrol since. The shocking story comes as London's police force battles a wave of allegations of sexism and violence against women following PC Wayne Couzens' kidnap and murder of Sarah Everard in 2020. PC Turner told Marwa his inappropriate calls … [Read more...] about Met Police officer tells mum ‘I’d like to search you’ in creepy phone call she recorded

The Chilean marathon and ice swimmer - nicknamed ‘The Ice Mermaid’ - had just completed the most difficult challenge of her career to date. At the end of last month she swam the North Channel between Northern Ireland and Scotland - a distance of 35km, or around 21 miles - as part of a wider challenge to swim the seven oceans. This crazy and legendary challenge is not for the faint of heart, but if anyone is going to achieve it then it will be Hernández. She has already achieved some incredible things in her career, becoming the first Latin American swimmer to be crowned a world champion ice swimmer and being ranked number one in the world for three consecutive seasons by the International Winter Swimming Association. She also has a number of world records to her name including becoming the first person to swim three nautical miles (5.5km) between the Pacific and … [Read more...] about The record-breaking ‘Ice Mermaid’ who swims the world’s coldest and most dangerous waters
California heat persists, but no call for power cutbacks
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 5 SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Heat advisories remained in effect Thursday in the Sacramento and San Joaquin valleys and adjacent areas but managers of California’s power grid did not repeat the previous day’s call for voluntary conservation of electricity. Widespread triple-digit temperatures were again predicted, along with high humidity, raising the risk of heat-related illnesses, the National Weather Service said. On Wednesday, the California Independent System Operator asked residents to voluntarily reduce electrical use from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. to avoid stress on the grid that can lead to power failures. A surge of monsoon moisture created extensive cloud cover that kept the day’s high in the low 90s in the Sacramento area, but temperatures soared elsewhere in California’s interior. The Redding airport hit a record 110 degrees (43.3 Celsius), Bakersfield baked at … [Read more...] about California heat persists, but no call for power cutbacks
