An auction of Moon dust, cockroaches that ate Moon dust, and other lunar paraphernalia closed without a sale on 23 June after Nasa lawyers made it clear that the materials still belong to the space agency . “Extraordinary specimen display from an Apollo 11 lunar dust experiment, in which German cockroaches (among other lower creatures) were fed lunar soil material in order to observe potential pathological effects,” read the description of the lot put on auction by the Boston-based Remarkable Rarities. The auction company had estimated the value of the lot at $400,000. But in a letter from a Nasa lawyer, the space agency argued the auctioneer could not sell property that still belonged to Nasa, according to reporting by the Associated Press. “All Apollo samples, as stipulated in this collection of items, belong to NASA and no person, university, or other entity has ever been given permission to keep them after analysis, destruction, or other use for any purpose, … [Read more...] about Nasa demands return of Moon dust and cockroaches

Nasa Mars mission: UK scientists to choose pieces of red planet’s surface to bring back to Earth
Scientists are to select the pieces of Mars that will one day be brought back to Earth. Researchers hope that studying the samples of rock and soil from its surface could help them look for life on the red planet. Nasa 's Mars misssion is scheduled to launch on Thursday, carrying a rover that will explore the surface. It is just one of three crafts to set off in the "Summer of Mars", as missions from the US, China and the UAE all take advantage of the helpful alignment of the planets to set out to study our neighbour. Scientists at Imperial College London and the Natural History Museum will help the Nasa Perseverance rover select the Martian samples to be brought back to Earth, as part of its mission to find ancient microbial life Jezero crater, the 28-mile (45km) wide destination of Perseverance, contains sediments of an ancient river delta, a location where evidence of past life could be preserved if it ever existed on the planet. The mission and the rover finished their "Flight Readiness Review", a key final check before takeoff. The test sees both Nasa and its rocket teams approve the readiness of the spacecraft, and certifies that it is ready to launch. As part of the test, the spacecraft, its rocket, as well as the software and people on the ground are checked and approved. Now the rocket will be ready to launch in its window, which opens at 7.50am local eastern time on 30 July. “Our deepest thanks go to the many teams who have worked so hard to get Perseverance ready to fly during these challenging times,” said Nasa administrator Jim Bridenstine. Recommended Nasa rover images used to let people see what it would be like on Mars "This mission is emblematic of our nation’s spirit of meeting problems head-on and finding solutions together. UK joins US as protests erupt after ‘devastating’ decision to scrap abortion rights
Protests have taken place in the UK after a "devastating" decision to scrap the constitutional right to abortion in the United States was widely criticised. The US Supreme Court has ended constitutional protections for abortion that have been in place for nearly 50 years by deciding to overturn the landmark Roe v Wade ruling . At a protest outside the United States embassy in Vauxhall, south London, the crowds, some in costumes, held signs reading "Our bodies, Our choice". A protestor holds a placard in support of abortion rights outside the US Embassy in London Judith Orr, vice chairwoman of campaign group Abortion Rights, which claims to have organised the demonstration, said protesters were "full of rage and anger". Louisiana and Utah trigger laws banning abortions temporarily blocked by courts
Judges in Louisiana and Utah on Monday temporarily blocked prohibitions on abortion in their states following last week's U.S. Supreme Court ruling that ends a national right to the procedure. The high court on Friday overturned Roe v. Wade , which for nearly 50 years had granted women the constitutional right to an abortion. More than a dozen states set so-called trigger laws which were written to take immediate effect, banning or severely limiting abortions, in the event Roe v. Wade was overturned. A Louisiana judge on Monday issued a temporary restraining order against the state from enforcing its ban on abortions, leading to the immediate resumption of the procedure. Orleans Parish Civil District Court Judge Robin Giarrusso granted the request of plaintiffs Hope Medical Group For Women and Medical Students for Choice. Trigger states immediately enact anti-abortion law June 24, 2022 03:05 Hours later on Monday, Utah Third … [Read more...] about Louisiana and Utah trigger laws banning abortions temporarily blocked by courts
