WASHINGTON — In her first publicly broadcast comments since her husband, Paul Pelosi, was attacked by an intruder at the couple’s San Francisco home, Speaker Nancy Pelosi said his recovery was “going to be a long haul, but he will be well.” “It’s just so tragic how it happened,” Ms. Pelosi said in a video her team posted online on Friday, adding, “We have to be optimistic.” Ms. Pelosi’s brief remarks on her husband appeared to be part of a virtual call to discuss organizing for the midterm elections next week. In the video, Ms. Pelosi appeared seated before a bookshelf decorated with family photos and said she was at her home with her husband, who was surrounded by family. She thanked well-wishers for “your kind words, your prayers and your good wishes for Paul.” Mr. Pelosi, 82, was injured when the intruder hit him on the head with a hammer early in the morning on Oct. 28 before being tackled and restrained by police officers. The intruder demanded to see Ms. Pelosi, who … [Read more...] about Nancy Pelosi Says Her Husband’s Recovery Will Be a ‘Long Haul’

In Visiting Taiwan, Pelosi Capped Three Decades of Challenging China
WASHINGTON — In 1991, a trio of junior House members on a bipartisan trip to Asia was encouraged by a Chinese dissident they visited in Hong Kong to make a gesture of solidarity with government opponents and victims of the Tiananmen Square massacre when they reached Beijing. They quickly embraced the daring idea. “We were all nodding in agreement at the same time,” recalled Ben Jones, then a Democratic congressman from Georgia who made the trip along with John Miller, a Republican from Washington, and Nancy Pelosi, then an up-and-coming Democrat from California. Sneaking away to the huge square where a rebellion had been brutally put down two years earlier, the three American visitors unfurled a banner provided by the dissidents and smuggled to the mainland by Mr. Jones. “To those who died for democracy in China,” read a message embroidered in Chinese and English. The brazen display provoked a quick police response and a diplomatic tiff — though nothing on the scale of the … [Read more...] about In Visiting Taiwan, Pelosi Capped Three Decades of Challenging China
Fox News Expert Insists No Evidence of Pelosi Break-In as Video of Break-In Plays
Criminal defense attorney and regular Fox News guest Brian Claypool was left utterly humiliated on Friday when he suggested there was no evidence that Paul Pelosi’s attacker broke into his home—all despite the release of a security video showing exactly that. In fact, Fox News anchors had to air the actual footage of the break-in for Claypool, who had just appeared on the network the night before to discuss the impending release of the tapes. Debunking a slew of right-wing conspiracies about the brutal attack on former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s husband, Friday’s release of the 911 call, police body-cam video, and security footage showed alleged attacker David DePape violently swinging a large hammer to bust through a door before entering the home through a broken window. The emergency call, meanwhile, featured an initially calm Pelosi telling a dispatcher that DePape came into his home to “wait here for my wife,” adding that he doesn’t know the intruder. When DePape claims … [Read more...] about Fox News Expert Insists No Evidence of Pelosi Break-In as Video of Break-In Plays
Discovery’s ‘Rival Survival’ Is No Brainer PR Move
The dumbest question to emerge from Discovery Channel’s preview event at the National Press Club Thursday came from the Washington Business Journal . In a talk moderated by Politico ‘s now European editor-in-chief John Harris , a reporter asked two senators from opposing parties — Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) and Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.) — if they had to talk their staffs into letting them do a reality show about surviving on a remote island. Seriously? This is PR 101. This is bipartisanship in Washington. Which doesn’t really exist no matter how much anyone pretends it occasionally does. For instance, when two lawmakers from opposing parties can somehow convince reporters that they really are working hard to overcome their differences and find common ground. These story lines are not new. Think stupid sports bets between lawmakers. This one’s just a little more out there and adventurous, not to mention death defying. In some ways, working together is a mirage that … [Read more...] about Discovery’s ‘Rival Survival’ Is No Brainer PR Move
Trump Wants $2 Trillion Stimulus for Manufacturing Jobs, Trade Adviser Says
President Donald Trump would like to see manufacturing jobs prioritized in a new $2 trillion coronavirus relief package, White House trade adviser Peter Navarro said Saturday, adding that Congress would ideally pass the legislation before the August recess begins. Navarro, whom Trump chose as the policy coordinator of the Defense Production Act, which was invoked to help the country navigate the pandemic, discussed the White House's goals for a future economic relief package during an interview with CNN. As tensions between the U.S. and China continued to escalate in recent months, Navarro has frequently advocated bringing more of the U.S. supply chain onto its home turf . According to the trade adviser, manufacturing jobs will be key to reviving the U.S. economy as restrictions put in place because of the pandemic ease. "Put simply, we need to create more manufacturing jobs," he told CNN. "Manufacturing jobs not only provide good wages but also create more jobs both up- and … [Read more...] about Trump Wants $2 Trillion Stimulus for Manufacturing Jobs, Trade Adviser Says
Blinken Postpones Trip to China After Balloon Is Detected Over U.S.
WASHINGTON — Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken on Friday postponed a trip to Beijing after a Chinese high-altitude balloon, described as an “intelligence-gathering” airship by the Pentagon and a stray civilian device by China, was detected floating over the United States this week. The postponement was confirmed by State Department officials, citing the balloon and speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive issues. Mr. Blinken and a deputy spoke with the Chinese Embassy on Wednesday night, and on Friday morning Mr. Blinken told China’s top foreign policy official, Wang Yi , that the balloon’s course was a violation of sovereignty and “unacceptable,” according to a State Department official. There is no new date for Mr. Blinken’s trip to Beijing, the official added. Beijing had sought to defuse tensions with Washington on Friday over the balloon, expressing its regret over the incident, and saying the balloon was for civilian research and had “deviated … [Read more...] about Blinken Postpones Trip to China After Balloon Is Detected Over U.S.

Second Stimulus Check Update: Congress Can’t Agree on Next Relief Package
Partisan bickering and Senate disputes over the HEROES Act have placed doubt on when -- or if -- Americans will receive a second coronavirus relief stimulus check over the coming weeks. Washington lawmakers from both parties are continuing to hash out another round of stimulus payments two weeks after the House passed the $3 trillion Health and Economic Recovery Omnibus Emergency Solutions (HEROES) Act. But the likelihood Americans will receive a broad second round of direct deposits is quickly fading. Several competing pieces of legislation from House Democrats -- including one that featured $2,000 checks for U.S. households -- did not make it into the final bill now sitting before the Senate. Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell asked for a "pause" on all stimulus discussions until some time next month at the earliest. Some Senate Democrats as well as Republicans have criticized another round of $1,200 direct deposits like the one included in the $2.2 trillion CARES … [Read more...] about Second Stimulus Check Update: Congress Can’t Agree on Next Relief Package

Some House Republicans concerned McCarthy speakership would continue ‘past and ongoing Republican failures’
