House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif, is standing by Rep. Elizabeth Esty as the Connecticut congresswoman faces calls for her resignation for her self-proclaimed mishandling of domestic violence allegations against her since-fired chief of staff.“As Congresswoman Esty has acknowledged, her actions did not protect Ms. Kain and should have,” Pelosi said in a written statement. “Congresswoman Esty has now appropriately requested an expedited review by the Ethics Committee.”Esty did not dismiss her top adviser, Tony Baker, for three months after she learned that he had punched and threatened to kill Anna Kain, a former staffer in her office who he had dated. When Baker finally left his job, he was given a $5,000 severance and a recommendation that helped him land a job at Sandy Hook Promise.Democrats in the General Assembly began calling for her to resign on Saturday. Democrats pushing for Nancy Pelosi’s ouster as leader stand down — for now
Democrats who have pushed for Rep. Nancy Pelosi’s ouster as House minority leader are standing down – at least until after November’s midterm elections. Republican Speaker Paul Ryan’s surprise announcement last week that he would retire at the end of his term boosted Democrats’ hopes that they could wrest back control of the House this fall. The possibility of majority control also gave new life to a looming question: Will Pelosi, or someone else, lead the party? Democrats say they are focused on one task – winning – and have clamped down on talk of replacing Pelosi, D-Calif., who has guided the party for 17 years, served as speaker from 2007 to 2011 and is intent on reclaiming the gavel. “We have one North Star: 218 seats. Period,” said Rep. Denny Heck, D-Wash., the chairman of recruitment at the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. Several Democrats have called for a new, younger leadership team, helmed by someone other … [Read more...] about Democrats pushing for Nancy Pelosi’s ouster as leader stand down — for now
Nancy Pelosi: Dems ‘Will Win’ in Fall, Running for Speaker
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said Tuesday she planned to seek the speakership if the Democrats retake the lower chamber of Congress in the November elections. "We will win," Pelosi, 78, who has been representing California since 1987, told The Boston Globe. "I will run for speaker. "I feel confident about it," she said. "And my members do, too." Pelosi, who became the first woman to be elected speaker in 2007, was in Boston for a Democratic fund-raiser hosted by Massachusetts Rep. Katherine Clark. She said her presence was even more critical on Capitol Hill since Hillary Clinton lost the 2016 presidential election to Republican Donald Trump. "It’s important that it not be five white guys at the table, no offense," Pelosi told the Globe. She was referring to the Trump and House Speaker Paul Ryan of Wisconsin and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky. "I have no intention of walking away from that table." Pelosi's determination to remain in the mix has some … [Read more...] about Nancy Pelosi: Dems ‘Will Win’ in Fall, Running for Speaker
CNN: McConnell Becoming GOP’s Nancy Pelosi in Midterms
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., is losing support among Republican candidates in the upcoming midterm elections, much as Democratic candidates have distanced themselves from Senate Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., according to CNN. At a debate for West Virginia Senate candidates, all three GOP contenders refused to back McConnell when asked if they support him for majority leader. "I'm not the product of the liberal establishment," said state attorney general Patrick Morrisey. "I think that's why you're seeing all the conservatives come out for me. I'm going to make the right decision after we get through the general election." Rep. Evan Jenkins added that although McConnell did well to get Associate Justice Neil Gorsuch confirmed to the U.S. Supreme Court, it’s "way too premature" to discuss McConnell’s future as majority leader, noting that the senator "hasn’t even asked for [his] support." Don Blankenship, a former coal executive, accused … [Read more...] about CNN: McConnell Becoming GOP’s Nancy Pelosi in Midterms
