Reuters Staff 410 WASHINGTON ― U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor broke her right shoulder in a fall at her home, but will continue performing her duties as usual, a court spokeswoman said on Tuesday. “She will wear a sling for several weeks and will undergo physical therapy,” spokeswoman Kathy Arberg said in a statement. The injury that she sustained on Monday marked the second medical issue that Sotomayor, 63, has faced this year. The lifelong diabetic was treated by paramedics for low blood sugar at her home in Washington in January. Sotomayor, one of the nine-member court’s four liberal justices, was named to the court in 2009 by Democratic former President Barack Obama. World Poland European Union Rule of Law Judicial Independence The European Union on Monday announced it will launch legal proceedings against member state Poland, marking the second time Brussels has sought to sanction Warsaw for undermining judicial independence in the country. A new law targeting Poland’s Supreme Court will come into effect on Tuesday, forcing around 40 percent of the country’s 72 Supreme Court Justices into early retirement. Critics say the new law, which lowered the obligatory retirement age of the country’s Supreme Court judges to 65, is another attempt by the ruling Law and Justice Party (PiS) to consolidate power. PiS will be able to fill the vacant Supreme Court seats with judges loyal to the party. The law will also increase the number of Supreme Court justices from 72 to 120, allowing PiS to fill over two-thirds of the Supreme Court seats with new loyalists. A majority of likely voters were unable to correctly name just one Supreme Court justice, according to the latest C-SPAN/PSB poll. The results, according to the survey: 52 percent of voters overall were unable to name one High Court justice. 48 percent of voters overall said they could or correctly named a justice. 59 percent of voters identifying as conservatives could not name a justice. 57 percent of voters identifying as liberals correctly named a justice. Ruth Bader Ginsburg was the most recognizable justice; she was correctly identified by 25 percent of voters, according to the survey. Anthony Kennedy, the late Antonin Scalia and nominee Brett Kavanaugh were three incorrect responses given by voters who couldn't name a justice, according to C-SPAN. However, 53 percent of voters say they hear the right amount about the workings of the Supreme Court, compared to 44 percent who say they hear too little, according to the survey.
