June 29, 2022 by www.thestar.com.my

Paris (Reuters) - Tadej Pogacar will be the man to beat as he targets his third consecutive Tour de France title when the race sets off on Friday, with the 23-year-old Slovenian looking to become one of the sport's all-time great riders. Dubbed the "Baby Cannibal" for his similarities to former five-time winner Eddy "The Cannibal" Merckx, Pogacar has already won the UAE Tour, the Tirreno-Adriatico and Tour of Slovenia stage races this season as well as the Strade Bianche one-day classic. Only the Jumbo-Visma team armada seem able to dent Pogacar's armour. The Dutch outfit has two leaders - Slovenia's Primoz Roglic and last year's runner-up Jonas Vingegaard of Denmark - in a team that also boasts the formidable Wout van Aert. They will be trying to control the race and isolate Pogacar, who has already shown that he fears no-one on any terrain. Cycling-Olympic champion Van Vleuten to retire at the end of 2023 season

June 30, 2022 by www.thestar.com.my

(Reuters) - Olympic champion Annemiek van Vleuten will retire from professional cycling after the 2023 season, the Dutchwoman announced on Wednesday. The 39-year-old, who races for Movistar, won Olympic gold in the time trial and silver in the road race at the Tokyo Games last year. "The main reason, as I explained, to retire in 2023 is to do so while on top of my game, to round out that improvement process we and the team took up in 2021, and look for new challenges in life," Van Vleuten said in a statement. Van Vleuten's win in Tokyo completed a remarkable turnaround after she had suffered three fractured vertebrae and a concussion following a horrifying high-speed crash during the road race at the 2016 Rio Games. She also won the world time trial title in 2017 and 2018 and the road race in 2019. COPENHAGEN (Reuters) - Fans of the Tour de France took to the streets early on Friday in anticipation of this year's first stage, a time trial through the streets of Copenhagen, a city with more bikes than people. More than six hours before the start, spectators clad in yellow or polka-dotted jerseys had set up chairs and tables on their preferred spot along the route. "I arrived this early because I had to make sure I could see it up close," said Morten Morup, 36, who has been a fan of the Tour since early childhood. "I've always remembered the sound of summer on the terrace, and I've also been to see the Tour several times, in the Pyrenees and the Alps," Morup said. Watching the first stage go through his hometown was a no-brainer. "It's huge, it's once in a life-time." The 13km time trial through the capital, known as the world's most bike-friendly city, will take riders past several tourist hot spots, including a statue of the Little Mermaid from the fairy tale of … [Read more...] about Cycling-The ‘sound of summer’: Fans flock to Copenhagen to witness Tour de France start
