PILGRIMS taking part in an annual Sufi Muslim festival have been performing bizarre acts of torture on themselves to show their devotion. Some of the holy-man are pictured using knives to gouge out their eyeballs while others are seen with metal wire through their tongues and cheeks. One devotee at the Urs Festival is pictured both gouging his eye out and pulling a metal wire through his cheek. Thousands of Muslims travel across India to attend the historic festival every year, held in the city of Ajmer in Rajasthan. The six day festival commemorates the death of Sufi saint Moinuddin Chishti, a preacher and philosopher who died in the 13th Century. It is celebrated in the seventh month of the Islamic lunar calendar with night-long singing and dancing. Men are believed to perform the grisly acts of self-torture as acts of devotion to the saint. Devotees also offer prayers, flowers and food as donations to the shrine where Chishti's tomb lies. CHRISTMAS has come early for a terminally ill two-year-old as neighbours rallied together to bring festive magic to his final weeks of life. Brody Allen was diagnosed with embryonal brain cancer (ETMR) – an extremely rare brain tumour – in May. ASHURA is a festival of remembrance in Islam - but Sunni and Shi'a Muslims celebrate it for different reasons. Here's when the festival is this year. When is Ashura 2018? Ashura falls on the tenth day of Muharram (the first month of the Islamic year) in the Islamic calendar. This year's celebrations begin on the evening of Thursday, September 20 and end on the evening of Friday, September 21. Islamic religious dates are tabular: They begin at sunset on the first evening and ends at sunset the second evening. What does the Ashura festival day commemorate? In Sunni Islam, Ashura follows the traditions of Judaism as Jewish people followed a day of fasting around this time of year (commemorating the parting of the Red Sea for Moses and his followers to escape the Pharaoh.) The Prophet Muhammad thought that this tradition was worth following so he fasted and encouraged his followers to do the same. On this day, Sunni Muslims fast and celebrate by reflecting, showing respect and thanks.
