MADISON, Wis. — Some are handwritten pleas. Others are typed. They come on long pieces of yellow legal paper, other times on post cards. Some include photos. More than 500 have sent letters since November. An additional 540 or so have called. A few dozen have emailed. All are hoping that after eight years of Republican Gov. Scott Walker refusing to consider anyone's request, Wisconsin's new governor will follow through on his promise that the state's top executive will again be issuing pardons and shortening prison sentences through commutations. "The pardon process was designed for me," Elandis Peete wrote to Democratic Gov. Tony Evers in January. "I definitely made a mistake when I was younger, now being older I am much wiser. ... If granted a pardon it will open up many doors of greater opportunity for me and my families' future." "Making a Murderer" subject Steven Avery will have his case re-examined by a Wisconsin court, his lawyer announced this week. Avery, who is serving a life sentence for the 2005 murder of photographer Teresa Halbach, won a motion to appeal, sending his case back to a circuit court. There, the court can either grant a new trial or send the case back to the appellate court, which could potentially reverse his conviction or grant a new trial, his lawyer Kathleen Zellner told Newsweek. Authorities in Wisconsin were expected to provide new details Friday morning about 13-year-old Jayme Closs, who was found alive Thursday after disappearing the day her parents were murdered in October. The Barron County Sheriff's Department said it would be holding a press conference on the case at around 11 a.m. ET. A suspect was taken into custody Thursday. Law enforcement agents from Wisconsin and Michigan arrested 82-year-old Richard Gale Pierce Thursday in his hometown of Cheboygan, Michigan. A criminal complaint charges Pierce with killing 35-year-old Carol Jean Pierce in Sturgeon Bay in Sept.1975. Pierce told police he saw Carol Jean on the morning of Sept. 8 and when he returned home later than day, she was gone, the complaint said, according to the Green Bay Press Gazette.
