After having spent ₹40.78 crore and completed construction of a multi-level car parking facility on D.B. Road, R.S. Puram, the Coimbatore Corporation finds itself in a spot where it is unable to throw open the space for use. The Corporation sources said the civic body was awaiting power connection and to get to the power connection it needed the completion certificate from the Local Planning Authority. To get the completion certificate, the civic body needed the planning permission, which it did not have. The Corporation had taken up the multi-level car parking construction in 2019. It was supposed to have obtained the planning permission prior to the start of the construction but it did not. By then the State government had framed the Tamil Nadu Combined Development and Building Rules, 2019, which mandated that the Tangedco should give power connection only if there was completion certificate. That the Corporation went ahead with the construction without obtaining the planning … [Read more...] about Coimbatore Corporation in a spot over ₹40.78 crore multi-level car parking facility

Who’s the villain in “Thor: Love and Thunder”? Meet Christian Bale’s Gorr
Thor: Love and Thunder has released a new trailer that gives Marvel fans their first glimpse of new villain Gorr the God Butcher, played by Oscar-winner Christian Bale. The Thor 4 trailer reveals Gorr as a villain with ashy grey skin, a scarred face and white robes. Perhaps the gods made fun of the character's monochrome pallor as a kid, because now he is known as the God Butcher—pretty bad news for the MCU 's favorite god, Thor (played by Chris Hemsworth). Gorr the God Butcher is a relatively recent addition to the Thor comics, but has made an impact in his first decade. Selecting Bale as the character continues the tradition of casting Oscar-winning actors to play Thor bad guys, following Cate Blanchett's turn in Ragnarok . Here's what we know about Gorr the God Butcher from the comics, and what the makers of the movie have said about their version of the character. Who is Gorr the God Butcher? How a mysterious Putin ally, the ‘Russian Gatsby,’ moves his billions
On the day Russia invaded Ukraine , Vladimir Putin summoned 37 of his country’s most powerful business leaders to the Kremlin. The Russian president told them the incursion had been “a necessary measure” and asked them “to be understanding of what is going on.” Russia’s stock exchange had just closed at a 33 percent loss, wiping out an estimated $71 billion in wealth, with a raft of new sanctions from the United States and the European Union already in effect and more on the way. For many oligarchs in the room, it would be their first taste of international financial restrictions. But for others, like Suleiman Kerimov, sanctions were nothing new. The enigmatic, Ferrari-driving billionaire and his family have gone to great lengths to shield their assets, documents suggest, an effort that would have helped to insulate him when he and other Russian elites were sanctioned by the U.S. in 2018 for benefitting from the country’s “malign activity around the globe.” … [Read more...] about How a mysterious Putin ally, the ‘Russian Gatsby,’ moves his billions

Julian Castro has endorsed Elizabeth Warren — so hopefully she knows what to do next
Days after announcing the end of his own bid for the presidency, Julián Castro has endorsed another candidate with similar principles. On Monday morning, the now former Democratic candidate endorsed Elizabeth Warren for president. “The American people need a champion in Washington who will be a president for everyone,” Castro declared in a video accompanying his endorsement. “Someone who’s unafraid to fight like hell to make the big changes we need in the years ahead.” Castro’s endorsement of Warren should be unsurprising to anyone who paid close attention to his well-run but drastically underappreciated campaign. Castro was unlikely to endorse Pete Buttigieg, a man with a much thinner resumé than his but who has white privilege and all the political benefits that entails. And considering his exchange last fall with Joe Biden , it was highly unlikely for Castro to declare, “Yeah, that’s the guy.” Oh, Cory Booker is still there, but while he’s made the most of a … [Read more...] about Julian Castro has endorsed Elizabeth Warren — so hopefully she knows what to do next
All hands on deck: On Centre’s duty cut on petro products
The Union government’s decision on Saturday to cut the excise duty on petrol and diesel by ₹8 and ₹6, respectively, is a belated acknowledgement that April’s multi-year highs in inflation were spurred in significant measure by high fuel prices. Coming more than six months after its last duty reduction — on Deepavali eve — the latest cut is a welcome step to ease the burgeoning cost burden on producers and consumers. With the price of the Indian basket of crude oil having risen by more than 33% since November, and with a bulk of the surge coming in the wake of the Ukraine war in February, state-run oil marketing companies had raised retail fuel prices sharply over a 16-day period starting March 22. Largely as a result of the higher fuel prices and quickening food costs, inflation based on the Consumer Price Index accelerated to a 95-month high of 7.8% last month, while wholesale price gains soared to a multi-decade high of 15.1%. S&P Global’s April PMI surveys showed that both … [Read more...] about All hands on deck: On Centre’s duty cut on petro products
