Members of the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue, also known as the “Quad,” announced plans on Tuesday to launch a maritime initiative meant to combat illegal Chinese fishing in the Western Pacific Ocean, Kyodo News reported. The heads of state of each of the Quad ‘s members (the U.S., India, Australia, and Japan) met in Tokyo on May 24 for the latest summit of the security bloc, which serves as a counter to China’s growing influence in the Indo-Pacific region. The pact’s new plan includes measures to help member states track illegal fishing and other unlawful activities carried out by China in the territorial waters of other nations. The Quad members issued a joint statement on Tuesday citing “the militarization of disputed features, the dangerous use of coast guard vessels and maritime militia, and efforts to disrupt other countries’ offshore resource exploitation activities” as among the actions by China it hoped to curb through the maritime initiative. “Under the … [Read more...] about Quad Security Bloc Vows to Track China’s Illegal Fishing in Western Pacific

U.S. Announces New Plans on Maritime Cooperation with ASEAN, Eyeing China
May 14, 2022 08:14 The United States has announced new plans to expand maritime cooperation with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations as ASEAN leaders gather in Washington for a special summit seen as a show of solidarity in regard to China. ASEAN members Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines and Vietnam claim parts of the South China Sea -- a waterway claimed almost entirely by Beijing, which has landfilled and militarized islets over the past decade. U.S. President Joe Biden's administration is rolling out $60 million in new regional maritime initiatives that include the transfer of ships to Southeast Asian countries to increase the coastal nations' capacity to enforce maritime law and counter illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing. "We need to step up our game in Southeast Asia," a senior administration official told reporters. "We need to work more closely with ASEAN." At a meeting Friday with Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi, Secretary of State … [Read more...] about U.S. Announces New Plans on Maritime Cooperation with ASEAN, Eyeing China
Satellite images hint at China’s Taiwan invasion plans
New satellite imagery from a desert in northwestern China has revealed a dummy missile target shaped like an airplane operated by the Japanese military that could be called into use should China attack Taiwan. Japan , which hosts the largest number of American troops outside of U.S. territory, is the linchpin of Washington's power projection in the Pacific. The U.S. ally is also among the nations most likely to be involved in a potential defense of Taiwan in the future. In the Taklamakan Desert in Xinjiang, researchers believe the airframe mockup used by the Chinese military for target practice is modeled on a Boeing E-767, an airborne warning and control system (AWACS) aircraft operated by the Japan Air Self-Defense Force (JASDF), according to a May 20 report by Nikkei Asia . The satellite photo captured on May 13 in Xinjiang's Ruoqiang county shows the dummy target with twin engines and a large, disc-shaped radar on its fuselage parked on a runway. It appears to be … [Read more...] about Satellite images hint at China’s Taiwan invasion plans
Security tightened in Amritsar ahead of ‘Operation Bluestar’ anniversary
Ahead of radical Sikh outfits giving a call for Amritsar’s ‘shutdown’, launching a campaign to garner support for it, and the holding of a march in the city to mark the 38th anniversary of ‘ Operation Bluestar’ , security across the city has been beefed up. Amid the recent spate of incidents surrounding the ‘Khalistan’ connection in Punjab and its neighbouring States, and the clash in Patiala, the police are leaving nothing to chance. Flag marches are being conducted in the city, apart from intense checking at several places to maintain law and order. To keep an eye on possible troublemakers, CCTV cameras have been installed on all major routes. On April 29, a clash broke out in Patiala between different groups of people over the holding of a march against the backdrop of the call by the banned Sikhs for Justice (SFJ) to mark the foundation day of ‘Khalistan’. “We are a bit extra cautious this year in the wake of the recent Patiala incident. This [the Operation Bluestar … [Read more...] about Security tightened in Amritsar ahead of ‘Operation Bluestar’ anniversary
Central bank has no plans to sell bonds in portfolio
SYDNEY: Australia’s central bank has no plans to sell bonds from its portfolio, assistant governor Chris Kent said yesterday, even as he acknowledged it has now embarked on “quantitative tightening”(QT). Earlier this month, the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) raised its benchmark interest rate by 25 basis points to 0.35% and decided against reinvesting the proceeds of maturing securities in its portfolio. “It is easier to adjust policy and influence financial conditions by calibrating one instrument rather than two in response to evolving conditions,” Kent said, explaining the reason the RBA decided against selling. The RBA initiated quantitative easing in November 2020 as its earlier failure to join international counterparts in bond buying was helping push the Australian dollar higher and hurting the economy. It scrapped the programme three months ago, having abandoned a separate yield-curve control programme late last year. Kent, who oversees financial markets in his role … [Read more...] about Central bank has no plans to sell bonds in portfolio
Buffalo Shooter Planned More Killings, Police Commissioner Says
May 17, 2022 08:03 The white teenage gunman accused of killing 10 Black people in a racist frenzy at a Buffalo, New York, grocery store would have kept on killing if he had escaped the scene, the city's police commissioner said Monday. The gunman, identified as Payton Gendron, 18, had talked about gunning down more people at another store if he'd been able to flee the Tops Friendly Market where he allegedly shot 13 people, 11 of them Black, Police Commissioner Joseph Gramaglia told CNN. "He was going to get in his car and continue to drive down Jefferson Avenue and continue doing the same thing," the Buffalo police official said. The Saturday afternoon mayhem unfolded in a predominantly Black neighborhood in the northeastern U.S. city, an attack that some authorities are describing as a hate crime fueled by what they contend was the shooter's rage at nonwhite people and the racist theory that nonwhite immigrants are moving to the United States to replace white people. … [Read more...] about Buffalo Shooter Planned More Killings, Police Commissioner Says
