As the new socially distant reality drags on, hair has become a major topic of conversation on Zoom dates and phone calls. Videos of at-home buzz cuts are inescapable on social media. Celebrities from Ricky Martin to Elle Fanning have dyed their hair pink. Anderson Cooper revealed on air that he accidentally gave himself a bald spot. But not everyone’s feeling the DIY spirit. As cabin fever—and split ends—reach an apex, barbers have begun to offer house calls for those unwilling to pick up scissors themselves. Last month, The Washington Post described a growing “black market of hairstylists” ready to “risk it all” with such visits, but those who spoke to The Daily Beast are not trying to hide their services. Many have taken to advertise on Craigslist and Instagram, charging a bit more than usual for appointments. It helps them keep food on the table and rent paid as salons remain shuttered. “As a professional barber [before coronavirus], I took the risk of getting … [Read more...] about You Can Get a Quarantine Haircut if You Know the Right Barber—and Have the Money

Majority of Black British women suffer side effects from hair relaxers such as burnt scalp, study finds
Two thirds of Black British women have experienced painful side effects – including burnt scalps and hair loss – from using hair relaxers, new research has revealed. A study of 1,024 Black British women aged 25-44, conducted by feminist group Level Up and Black hair care company Treasure Tress, found that over 95 per cent of Black British women do not trust big beauty brands to sell them safe products. Some 97 per cent of respondents believe hair products containing lye – also known as sodium hydroxide – should be banned. The survey, the first of its kind in Britain, sought to understand Black women’s experiences of hair relaxers, uncovering some startling experiences of ailments developed following use of such products. Hair relaxers that contain lye, a harsh chemical used in drain unblockers, have been linked to a range of health problems among Black British women including breast cancer, hormone imbalance, asthma, fibroids and fertility problems. … [Read more...] about Majority of Black British women suffer side effects from hair relaxers such as burnt scalp, study finds
Young enough for a comeback, but old enough not to be picked
The passing of a generation and the advent of a new one is a bitter-sweet experience. You miss the heroes you have grown up with, but you also look forward to where their replacements will take the team. As someone said, if transition isn’t painful, you are not making progress! It doesn’t happen overnight. Over a few years you realise that the team has a new feel to it, a different texture. A change that was in the future is happening now. It is like watching a batsman go about his business without fuss — suddenly you look up and see he has scored 30 or 40 runs. It happened when India’s famed middle order and world-class bowlers bowed out of the scene. Sourav Ganguly and Anil Kumble bid farewell in 2008-09, followed by Rahul Dravid, V.V.S. Laxman, Virender Sehwag, Zaheer Khan, Sachin Tendulkar and Harbhajan Singh. Generational shifts That brought what is referred to as the Golden Age, or the Tendulkar Era, to a close. Many of the next lot — the Dhoni-Kohli generation, if you … [Read more...] about Young enough for a comeback, but old enough not to be picked
Workers in shut-down sectors may never be able to stop working
The devastating effects on the global economy of the coronavirus pandemic are rapidly making their presence felt on a very domestic level. Unless you have been living under a rock – which might not be a bad idea right now – you’ll already know that the first big hits to employment came hurtling through the furlough mist last week to make 11,000 people in the retail and aviation industries unemployed. Meanwhile, accommodation and restaurant businesses have shrunk by 85 per cent. It’s fair to say the people who now don’t have a job to go to have more immediate concerns to grapple with than the state of their retirement savings. But when the short term is over, the long term too could look very different. According to the latest data released from Scottish Widows, even before this once-in-a-generation event blindsided us, the people working in industries that have now been hit the hardest were already falling behind in the race to set enough aside to live on in old age. … [Read more...] about Workers in shut-down sectors may never be able to stop working
“I discovered red ‘dots’ on my skin, a day later I was diagnosed with a rare cancer”
I want to be a dentist in the future, so in late 2021 I was at college in Florida doing pre-dental courses. I was balancing a lot because I was also on the basketball team and often had practice right after class. Originally, I was going to study closer to home, in Iowa, so I was juggling a lot with a new state and new friends. I hadn't been doing a good job of time management, so I was not getting much sleep and I was feeling run down but I wasn't really thinking anything of it. I had swollen lymph nodes and a little bit of a cold that I couldn't get over and I was getting easily bruised, but I'm a basketball player, so again, so I didn't think much of it. What happened next is kind of crazy; I really think it was God. I had been bruised and feeling fatigued for weeks, and in early November, my sister and brother-in-law came to Florida to visit me and watch my first home basketball game. We went out to dinner on Thursday November 11, after practice, and that's when I noticed the … [Read more...] about “I discovered red ‘dots’ on my skin, a day later I was diagnosed with a rare cancer”
At Least 20 Nations Offers Missiles, Arms And Military Training To Ukraine
Some 20 countries offered new security assistance packages for Ukraine to battle invading Russian forces in a meeting of allies on Monday, US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin announced. In their second gathering, nearly four dozen countries and organizations forming the Ukraine Defense Contact Group met online to discuss helping Ukraine, and 20 nations pledged arms, ammunition and other supplies to support Kyiv. The group was briefed by Ukraine Defense Minister Oleksiy Reznikov on the current situation of the three-month-old war, in which the two sides are fighting along a long front line over territory Russia has seized in Ukraine’s east and south. “Today, together with Minister Reznikov and his team, we’ve gained a sharper and shared sense of Ukraine’s priority requirements and the situation on the battlefield,” Austin said. “Many countries are donating critically needed artillery ammunition, coastal defence systems and tanks and other armoured vehicles,” he said. … [Read more...] about At Least 20 Nations Offers Missiles, Arms And Military Training To Ukraine

Director David Cronenberg imagines future of sex in new film
Sci-fi shockmeister David Cronenberg grossed out the Cannes Film Festival Monday (May 23) with an ultra-creepy take on the future of sex starring Kristen Stewart, Lea Seydoux and long-time collaborator Viggo Mortensen. Crimes Of The Future, which sent many queasy viewers running for the exits, is set in a dystopian world in which people look for erotic satisfaction that goes far more than skin-deep. The Canadian filmmaker, 79, behind body horror classics including The Fly, Crash and eXistenZ said that with shifting notions of meaning in human society, physicality told the truth. "Body is reality - that's always been my mantra in one way or another," he told a small group of reporters ahead of the film's red carpet premiere. "Sexuality is an incredibly important, potent part of life because it always involves politics, culture, science, philosophy. We can't have sex like animals because it's always complicated." Surgery is new sex Mortensen is joined by Seydoux, … [Read more...] about Director David Cronenberg imagines future of sex in new film
Pavement Takes the Stage for First Time in 12 Years at Rarities-Filled Tour Warmup Show in L.A.: Concert Review
Click here to read the full article. When the iconic indie-rock forebear Pavement last reunited, for a massive tour in 2010, it was a tale of two bands, depending on when you saw them. At the beginning of the run, the lineup was tighter and mightier than ever, playing Coachella with the grit of a band determined to solidify its legacy while collecting paychecks and playing venues exponentially bigger than those it hit during its initial run. If you saw Pavement at the end of the tour, though, you saw a band going through the same issues that led it to break up in the first place. At the Hollywood Bowl on the second-to-last-night of that run, the tension onstage between Stephen Malkmus and the rest of the band was palpable; it was a miracle they got through that show, not to mention the four that followed it, before calling it quits again, seemingly forever. All of which is to say, just the fact that the band was all on the same stage for the first time in 12 years at the … [Read more...] about Pavement Takes the Stage for First Time in 12 Years at Rarities-Filled Tour Warmup Show in L.A.: Concert Review
