Biomaterial from fungal extract helps heal wounds
The use of antibiotics to control bacterial infections has taken a beating with the emergence of multi-drug resistant pathogens, and researchers are looking to develop other ways of tackling such bacterial infections. In this context scientists have developed a new biomaterial that can be used to disinfect wounds and hastens the process of healing, as seen in mouse models. Reported in a paper in the journal Biomaterials Science , the work is a collaboration between scientists from Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Mandi, IIT Delhi and National Institute of Science Education and Research (NISER) in Bhubaneswar Pullulan polymer The biomaterial is derived from the polymer pullulan which is secreted by the fungus Aureobasidium pullulans . It is an exopolysaccharide, that is, this polymer is secreted by the fungus itself into the medium on which it is growing. “We, as a research group, have a special interest and expertise in exploiting the varied properties of natural … [Read more...] about Biomaterial from fungal extract helps heal wounds

Playlist: The 20 best albums from 1968
After the heady daze and smorgasbord of musical treasures of 1967, 1968 was the year that rock music finally grew up. It was the year that album sales outstripped singles for the first time, with the album cover – following on from 1967’s Sgt Pepper and The Velvet Underground and Nico – becoming an intrinsic part of the whole long player experience. The double album came of age and new genres like heavy rock sprung up. Psychedelia was still a prevailing trend but there were also folk and blues revivals as artists looked to the past as they moved forward. The move towards a more rootsier, stripped-back approach to the music caught on and informed much of the best music of the year. Recommended Playlist: The 10 greatest singles from 1968 Soul music, still reeling from the loss of Otis Redding, was very much in rude health in the form of Stax and Motown, with the latest black music offshoot – psychedelic soul – just about to go stratospheric. In the wider world … [Read more...] about Playlist: The 20 best albums from 1968

Simon Schama: Celebrating Queen Elizabeth’s Diamond Jubilee
Sixty years and three months ago, on Feb. 5, 1952, the heir presumptive to the British throne spent her last night as a princess up a giant fig tree. Treetops Hotel was perched in the game park of Sagana, where a hunting lodge had been given by the "Kenyan people" to Elizabeth and her husband, Philip, as a wedding present five years before. They had stopped in what was still an African colony on their way to Australia to show the flag for Britain and its monarchy, now that Elizabeth's chronically ill father, King George VI, was unable to take trips around what was left of the empire. A violent, bloody Kikuyu insurrection was about to break out in Kenya, but the good looks and easy grace of the princess and her tall, impossibly handsome husband disarmed everyone who saw them in action. Then came the news that her father had died of a coronary thrombosis. There are no reports of how the young woman, instantly become Queen Elizabeth II, took the news. But the duke's equerry, Michael … [Read more...] about Simon Schama: Celebrating Queen Elizabeth’s Diamond Jubilee
Actually, Summer Is Not Tomorrow
Sign up for Kaitlyn and Lizzie’s newsletter here. Lizzie: As inspiration for this newsletter, which is about a birthday party, I started researching well-known birthday moments in movies, to see how the birthday celebrations that I experience in my life stack up to those in the cinematic universe. I found IMDb’s “ 25 Most Memorable Birthday Scene in Movies ,” which offers helpful descriptions of said birthday scenes. Excerpts include “Schindler’s birthday party where he is kissing every woman present” in Schindler’s List , “Damien’s 5th birthday” in The Omen , and “Birds attack on Cathy’s birthday” in The Birds . These are dark birthdays! Even the description of 13 Going On 30 (“Wakes up being 30 years old woman on 13th birthday”) has an air of inevitable trauma. In general, birthdays are not as bad as Hollywood via IMDb makes them out to be. In broad strokes, there’s typically a social element and some kind of dessert, two things that are probably on a hierarchy of … [Read more...] about Actually, Summer Is Not Tomorrow
