Boris Johnson Under Fire for Second Holiday in Two Weeks Amid Cost of Living Crisis
Outgoing Prime Minister Boris Johnson drew fresh criticism Monday over his handling of multiple crises afflicting Britain, after taking a second summer holiday just weeks before he leaves office. The main opposition Labour party accused Johnson, who is due to leave office on September 6, of having “one big party” as many Britons struggle with a surging cost-of-living crisis. With inflation at its highest rate in decades and the UK predicted to slump into recession, people across England are also struggling with the impact of a drought officially declared on Friday. But Johnson, who only returned to his Downing Street desk last week after enjoying a five-day belated honeymoon with wife Carrie in Slovenia, opted to take another break this week in Greece. A Greek website posted footage of the British leader shopping at a supermarket in a coastal town near Athens, stocking up on items including food and wine. “It’s all just one big party for Boris Johnson while the country … [Read more...] about Boris Johnson Under Fire for Second Holiday in Two Weeks Amid Cost of Living Crisis
Chip shop meals may rise to £11.50 in cost of living crisis – and use cheap fish
Fish and chip shops might have to use cheaper products and crank up prices by an extra £3 to tackle the cost of living crisis . Chippies have been a popular choice in recent weeks as Brits flocked to the seaside and took advantage of the iconic national dish. But half of them could go out of business across the UK amid an increase in costs and tariffs. A tariff on all seafood imported from Russia has had a devastating impact on the industry. In turn, the price of a meal at a fish and chip shop could be set to increase from an average of £8.50 to £11.50 countrywide, My London reports . Up to 5,000 fish and chip shops could be lost from British high streets and seaside towns. Chippies may also have to replace traditional cod and haddock with hake and other types of cheaper white fish as the tariff on overseas fish has caused an increase in prices. The average cost of a chip shop takeaway could go up by £3 ( Image: Getty Images/iStockphoto) Last week, … [Read more...] about Chip shop meals may rise to £11.50 in cost of living crisis – and use cheap fish

Monkeypox may have made first jump from owners to a dog, report says
The first suspected case of human-to-dog transmission of monkeypox has been reported in Paris, leading the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to update its website to include dogs among animals susceptible to catching the virus. The disease can spread between people and animals, said the CDC, which is studying which animals can contract monkeypox, which the United States declared a public health emergency this month. The CDC lists 10 animals, including dogs, that can be infected with monkeypox. The evidence of spread from humans to dogs, published in the Lancet, could lead to further guidance on how pets should be cared for if they're in a living space with an infected person, Rosamund Lewis, the World Health Organization's lead on monkeypox, told The Washington Post on Monday. Monkeypox usually spreads from human to human through direct contact with infectious rashes, scabs or bodily fluids. Journalists around the world face ‘Repression 2.0’: CPJ report
Press freedom in the U.S. has declined and is part of a "deeper, more enduring and more troubling" trend around the world, according to a new report from the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ). CPJ released its annual Attacks on the Press report on Tuesday, which gauges the state and freedom of the media around the world. Joel Simon, executive director of CPJ, said the U.S. and several countries around the world face "repression 2.0," defined as an updated version of well-worn tactics used against the press: state censorship, imprisoning critics and political control. "Governments might justify an internet crackdown by saying it is necessary to suppress hate speech and incitement to violence," Simon writes. "They might cast the jailing of dozens of critical journalists as an essential element in the global fight against terror." Such tactics resulted in 259 journalists being in jail by the end of 2016, the highest number recorded by CPJ.
