Back in 1994, the year the World Wide Web was actually born, a man by the name of Jean-Noël Frydman was smart enough to buy a domain that would soon become one of the Internet’s most sought-after. The French expat snapped up France.com from Web.com and set up a “digital kiosk” website for French speakers in the US. As the world became increasingly dependent on all things digital, business grew for Frydman, who would regularly be approached by French government institutions to collaborate on campaigns on his coveted website. However, the relationship had soured by 2015, with France’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs launching a lawsuit to expropriate the domain from its owner. Web.com blocked the transfer but French authorities did not desist. In 2017, Paris’s Court of Appeals ruled that France.com was violating French trademark law and by March 2018, Web.com had caved in and abruptly handed over … [Read more...] about French government seizes France.com domain, owner sues

New York Man Sues France After Country Seizes ‘Multi-million Dollar’ France.com Domain Name
World France Internet A New York-based man is suing France over a disputed domain name, which he believes was unfairly seized after more than 20 years of ownership. French-born Jean-Noel Frydman is suing the country for “cybersquatting” on the France.com domain name, CNBC reported. The site was first registered in 1994 but was seized by French authorities in March after a three-year court battle. Frydman claimed that the domain is worth millions of dollars per year and that it was taken without warning or compensation. Frydman spent two decades building his site, which was conceived as a “digital kiosk” for Francophiles in the U.S. The first website included information on French culture and a section on travel to the country. Is Ryan Pace really the NFL’s worst GM? NFL.com’s Gregg Rosenthal defends his stance
NFL.com columnist Gregg Rosenthal knows that critiquing general managers can be a touchy subject, but even he wasn’t quite ready for the reaction from Bears fans when he ranked Ryan Pace last among GMs who have been on the job at least one season.“I definitely got more feedback on that than I would have expected, and this isn’t the first time on something Pace-related,” Rosenthal told the Tribune about the column posted last week. “… Bears fans, they were all fired up.”This isn’t the first time Rosenthal has run afoul with Bears fans. In March, he left Mitch Trubisky off his list of top 32 quarterbacks but included Teddy Bridgewater, whose future viability is questionable given he missed all of 2016 and most of 2017 while recovering from a severe knee injury. But Rosenthal’s not out on a limb with his take on Pace, at least outside of Chicago. A USA Today survey of 25 NFL agents ranked Pace’s staff among the least-prepared … [Read more...] about Is Ryan Pace really the NFL’s worst GM? NFL.com’s Gregg Rosenthal defends his stance

With Backpage.com Prosecution, Left Ties Online Free Speech to Transgender Prostitutes’ Rights
President Trump signed the FOSTA-SESTA anti-sex trafficking bill last Thursday, the same day Backpage.com CEO Carl Ferrer pleaded guilty to a conspiracy charge related to the shutdown of what Attorney General Jeff Sessions called “the dominant marketplace for illicit commercial sex.” Internet activists of both leftist and libertarian orientation quickly connected the two events, despite the fact the shutdown preceded the passage by Congress of the Allow States and Victims to Fight Online Sex Trafficking Act (FOSTA or SESTA after an earlier version of the bill).“Backpage was shut down soon after the passage of FOSTA, a bill passed last month that will make websites more liable for what users do and say on their platforms. Advocates for FOSTA held up Backpage as the poster-villain for why they claimed we need stronger anti-trafficking protection,” the left-wing Motherboard, tech division of Vice News, writes. President Donald Trump however, had yet to sign FOSTA … [Read more...] about With Backpage.com Prosecution, Left Ties Online Free Speech to Transgender Prostitutes’ Rights
