Cute things are usually vulnerable, fragile, and weak. But cuteness itself is mighty indeed. Morten L. Kringelbach and his colleagues at the University of Oxford recently described cuteness as “one of the most basic and powerful forces shaping our behavior.” And yet, despite its elemental importance, cuteness might be a fluid, evolving concept and trait. The word emerged as a shortened form of the word ‘acute’, originally meaning sharp, clever, or shrewd. Schoolboys in the United States began using cute to mean pretty or attractive in the early 19th century. But cuteness also implies weakness. Mignon , the French word for cute or dainty, is the origin of the English word ‘minion,’ a weak follower or underling. Kawaii , a Japanese word referring to a similar concept, appears to have been first used in the 11th century to mean pitiable. Yet the mascots of Japanese kawaii today are not always so pitiable. Pikachu, a rat-like creature from the videogame franchise Pokémon, can … [Read more...] about How Pikachu Hijacks Your Brain’s Reward System

Mother changes son’s name after tattoo spelling error
A Swedish mother was in dire need of a quick fix when a tattoo artist misspelt her son's name on her arm—so she decided to just rename him. Johanna Giselhäll Sandström, 30, wanted to honor her two children Nova and Kevin by permanently etching their names onto her skin three years ago, but the artist accidentally tattooed "Kelvin" instead. According to Blekinge Läns Tidning , Sandström thought she was going to faint when she left the tattoo studio and realized the mistake. "[My] heart stopped," she said. "I said I wanted the names of my children tattooed on me and I gave the artist their names. The artist drew the design and didn't ask anything about the spelling, so I didn't give it any more thought." When she returned to the parlor, the artist simply laughed and offered her a refund but said there was nothing he could do to correct the error, reported The Local . Sandström said she researched tattoo removals and considered it but decided to just take the easy way … [Read more...] about Mother changes son’s name after tattoo spelling error
Vulgar Florida man with face tattoo arrested after telling kids in playground where babies come from
A Florida man was arrested over the weekend after he scaled playground equipment at a park and shouted a vulgar explanation about where babies come from at children who were playing nearby. At around 3 p.m. on Sunday, Otis Dawayne Ryan, 30, climbed atop playground equipment in Tampa Bay while yelling at a group of children between four and six years old about how babies come from women, according to authorities. An officer, who witnessed the incident, arrested Ryan and charged him with disorderly conduct, reported Tampa Bay Times . "I watched [Ryan] walk over to the busy playground area and climb to the top of one of the children's toys that was being occupied by children between the ages of 4 and 6," the officer wrote in the arrest report. "He then started shouting from the top telling the children that babies come out of women. At that time parents were rushing to the area to remove their children." The officer also said that Ryan was using explicit language. After … [Read more...] about Vulgar Florida man with face tattoo arrested after telling kids in playground where babies come from
Nolte: The Constitution Protects AR-15s, Not Baby Butchering
My favorite part of the post- Roe v. Wade era (other than writing “post- Roe v. Wade era”) is the pure joy that comes with the left’s terrible arguments, especially when the left has known since May that Roe was doomed and had all kinds of time to prepare better arguments. Y’all are not only sore losers; you’re fucking stupid. Maybe I can help. Try this… CTRL+F. This is a very simple procedure where you open up the U.S. Constitution in your favorite Internet browser and hit CTRL+F. This opens a box that allows you to search the U.S. Constitution for specific words and phrases. The Constitution against a flag (alancrosthwaite/Getty) You should try it. It’s really cool. So here’s what I want you crybaby-morons to do… CTRL +F “abortion.” Nothing? Okay, CTRL+F “killing babies.” Nothing again? Okay, try this: CTRL+F “butcher the unborn.” Nothing still? Okay, this time, we’ll broaden things a bit. CTRL+F “right to privacy.” What? Nothing again? … [Read more...] about Nolte: The Constitution Protects AR-15s, Not Baby Butchering
VICTOR DAVIS HANSON: The Cry-Baby Leftist Mind
Modern progressives assume moral and intellectual authority. Consequently, their supposedly superior ends naturally justify almost any means necessary to achieve them. Among the elite, the Democrats’ “blue-wall” states were once considered a testament to the wisdom of the Electoral College. When that wall crumbled in 2016 to Donald Trump, the Electoral College suddenly was blasted as a relic of our anti-democratic founders. The nine-person Supreme Court was once beloved. On issues like abortion, school prayer, same-sex marriage, pornography and Miranda rights, the Left cheered the Court as it made the law and ignored legislatures and presidents. Republican Court picks – Harry Blackmun, William Brennan, Anthony Kennedy, Sandra Day O’Connor, Lewis Powell, John Roberts, David Souter, John Paul Stevens, Potter Stewart and Earl Warren – would often flip leftward. How could they not be swayed by the greater brilliance of their liberal colleagues? From affirmative action to Roe … [Read more...] about VICTOR DAVIS HANSON: The Cry-Baby Leftist Mind

How to maintain clothing over time from downtown abbey vintage supplier
While many of us are looking to be more sustainable when it comes to our wardrobe, it can be easy to fall into the "fast fashion" trap of buying cheap clothes only for them to fall apart in a matter of months. One way of avoiding this is buying second hand or investing in pieces from truly eco-friendly brands, which can often be considerably more expensive than high-street pieces. So, how can consumers who are hesitant about investing in pieces ensure their clothing stands the test of time? Anita Lo, 28, from Cheshire, England, is the founder of Clara's Box—an online vintage store specializing in clothing from the 1800s to the 1990s and antique objects. Her global customer base includes various high-profile clients including the Downton Abbey costume design team and American fashion designer Connor Ives. Internet sobs as kitten with bulging eyes dies soon after birth: “My angel”
A kitten's tragically short life is breaking hearts online after it was born with bulging eyes and no nose. The kitten's owner took to TikTok , where they gained over 14 million views as people watched the young feline's first moments. "My cat just gave birth to an abnormal kitten and I don't know what to do," the owner wrote on-screen, showing herself with her hand covering her mouth. In the clip , the tiny kitten can be seen with bulging red eyes and no nose. Its mother sits in a cardboard box, awaiting their reunion. The owner places the "abnormal" kitten back with its mother, who appears to love it regardless and goes to lick it. There was clearly a serious issue with the kitten because cats are usually born with their eyes closed. They keep them closed for days after to protect their eyes as they develop. "Because newborn kittens are also hypersensitive to light, it's imperative that their eyes remain shielded until they are ready," reports Catster Magazine . … [Read more...] about Internet sobs as kitten with bulging eyes dies soon after birth: “My angel”
The Guerrilla Art of the Yarn Bomb Goes Natural
Culture Art Relax. They didn't come from Mars or some distant, undiscovered galaxy. The 10 aliens (and their 24 tents) that appeared in the backcountry of Santa Barbara, California, in late January were conceived in the backyard of a hedge-fund manager turned yarn bomber. "Yarn bombing," for those out of the loop, is a public and oft-times guerrilla art form in which all kinds of objects, from parking meters to hulking vehicles, get covered in brightly covered yarn. Some may remember the Mexico City bus stitched over in 2008 by Magda Sayeg, often called the "mother of yarn bombing." Typically, yarn bombers ply their craft in urban areas for maximum exposure. But Steve Duneier, a 47-year-old Brooklyn, New York, native, is bringing it to the wild. "My goal is to draw more people into the wilderness, which I do by detonating massive, colorful yarn bombs in nature," says Duneier. (For the record, this project can't really be termed guerrilla, since he got a permit from the Los … [Read more...] about The Guerrilla Art of the Yarn Bomb Goes Natural
