Peacefulness across the world has improved for the first time in five years, but it is less peaceful than a decade ago, according to a major report. The Global Peace Index found that many conflicts that emerged over the past ten years have begun to subside. But, despite the positive change, new domestic and international tensions have since unfolded. Iceland remained unchallenged as the most peaceful country in the world, a title it has held since 2008. It is followed by New Zealand and Portugal, a new entry into the top spots. At the bottom of the list, Afghanistan replaced Syria as the least peaceful country. Syria is now the second least peaceful country, followed by South Sudan and Yemen. The average country score improved by 0.09 per cent, with 86 countries getting better and 76 deteriorating. Bhutan is the most improved country in the top 20, rising 43 places in the past 12 years. The annual report, produced by the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP), looked at … [Read more...] about Which countries are the most peaceful in the world?

Six years of fierce civil war between Muslim rebels and Christian militias combined with a weak government have left the Central African Republic in a desperate state. An estimated 2.4 million people are thought to require urgent humanitarian assistance, many of those are children. _"This is the most dangerous place in the world for children. The most dangerous 'cause the conflict and the violence here prevent supplies from getting through, There is an alarming rate of malnutrition in the country as a result. U.S. First daughter Ivanka Trump appears to be trying to remove the negative connotations of her father President Donald Trump’s “America First” mantra. In promoting a new women’s global empowerment initiative, set to be announced Thursday afternoon, Ivanka Trump said: “‘America First’ does not mean ‘America Alone.’” “We are proud to be the most generous nation in the world,” she also said on a call with reporters on Wednesday, according to The New York Times. However, her words do not match the Trump administration’s track record, for the most part. The administration just last year slashed the United States Agency for International Development’s (USAID) foreign aid budget. But Ivanka Trump's Women’s Global Development and Prosperity Initiative, or W-GDP, will initially utilize $50 million from USAID and work with private companies—including Walmart and UPS—to help 50 million women … [Read more...] about Ivanka Trump Says U.S. Is ‘Most Generous Nation in the World’: ‘America First Does Not Mean America Alone’
LONG lizards scurry up moss-covered craggy rocks and walls, while the deafening courtship calls of cicadas reverberate across the peaks of the Cévennes mountains. This region, a 90-minute drive from Montpellier and Nîmes, lies to the north of the French Mediterranean lowland and although busy with tourists in the summer is under-visited the rest of the year. The delightfully unspoilt landscape of small medieval villages clinging to the steep slopes became known to the young writer Robert Louis Stevenson when he made his celebrated trip with a donkey through the area in autumn 1878. He kept detailed notes of his solo ramble which inspired his classic work Travels With A Donkey In The Cévennes. His donkey, called Modestine, carried food, tools, a lamp and candle, a gun and a bottle of Beaujolais. He wrote that it had ‘"a kindly eye, a determined under-jaw and a sober daintiness of gait". One hundred and forty years on, the area through which Stevenson travelled for … [Read more...] about Travel: Walking through the Cévennes, in the footsteps of Robert Louis Stevenson
