The answer involves a slow change in the sky that builds up to have a serious impact as the centuries roll on. Let’s start with getting home safely. If you want to find your way, check out the sky for the familiar seven stars of the Plough, part of the constellation Ursa Major (the Great Bear). Extend the line joining the two end stars – Merak and Dubhe – to locate a star of roughly the same brightness. This is Polaris, often known as the Pole Star or the North Star. The name is a giveaway: this star always lies due north, so once you’ve found the North Star you can work out which way you should be heading. Dinosaur-killing asteroid strike on Earth coincided with space rock impacts on Moon, study suggests
Sign up to our free weekly IndyTech newsletter delivered straight to your inbox Sign up to our free IndyTech newsletter Asteroid strikes on the Moon millions of years ago coincided with space rock impacts on Earth, including the one behind the Chicxulub crater linked to the death of the dinosaurs , according to a new study. The research, published on Wednesday in the journal Science Advances , assessed peculiar glass beads formed on the Moon that point to key craters created on the lunar surface by high-velocity meteorite impacts. Scientists, including those from the Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences, say the findings shed more light on the range of space rock collisions that bodies in the inner Solar System endure. Analysing the silicate glass beads, researchers could open a window into the history of meteorite impacts on the Moon. They analysed 215 silicate glass samples taken from the Moon during the Chinese space agency’s … [Read more...] about Dinosaur-killing asteroid strike on Earth coincided with space rock impacts on Moon, study suggests
Earth’s magnetic field could date to formation of the Moon, scientists say
Sign up to our free weekly IndyTech newsletter delivered straight to your inbox Sign up to our free IndyTech newsletter Certain well known properties of Earth ’s magentic field could help scientists better understand the origins of both the Earth and the Moon . In a new analysis conducted by scientists at the University of Chicago and the University of Leeds published Wednesday in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences , the researchers argue Earth’s magnetic field must date back to either before the formation of the Moon, or have arisen during the formation of the Moon. “Our new idea is to point out that our theoretical understanding of the Earth’s magnetic field today can actually tell us something about the very formation of the Earth-Moon system,” University of Leeds mathematicians and paper co-author David Hughes said in a statement . “At first glance, this seems somewhat surprising, and previous theories had not … [Read more...] about Earth’s magnetic field could date to formation of the Moon, scientists say
California teen arrested after violent puppy-snatching; pet returned to owner

Tommy Fury promises to ‘knock Jake Paul out’ as Piers Morgan grills him on baby leak
Tommy Fury says Jake Paul 's "mouth won't save him" when they meet in the boxing ring next month. The former Love Island star, 23, seemingly shut down rumours girlfriend Molly-Mae Hague was "devastated" Jake announced they had welcomed their baby girl Bambi into the world last week , and claimed his boxing rival's tweet was merely "speculation". Speaking to Piers Morgan on Wednesday night, the new dad pledged to "knock [Jake] out" when face off in the ring in Saudi Arabia on Sunday, February 26, after several failed attempts to get a fight confirmed. Tommy went on to declare YouTuber Jake's boxing career would be over once he's done with him in the ring and predicted their clash wouldn't go on longer than four rounds. Supporting Sustainable Development Through Space Exploration
Meet SWOT, the satellite that will teach us more about Earth's water than we've ever known. SWOT is NASA 's Surface Water and Ocean Topography satellite that will survey more than 90% of the planet's water, from small freshwater lakes to vast ocean depths. NASA says SWOT's high-definition instrumentation will provide researchers with an unprecedented view of how water resources are changing and how disaster-preparedness organizations can protect communities. "The satellite will address some of the most pressing climate change questions of our time," according to NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory . Some have said that humans must leave Earth to save it. Actually, we've been doing that for decades. Space exploration played a role in responding to the 1970s U.S. energy crisis , developed a method to produce biofuel from algae , and contributed to water filtration methods . Today, the United Nations ' 2030 Agenda includes 17 Sustainable Development Goals , all of which … [Read more...] about Supporting Sustainable Development Through Space Exploration
Big-Name Donors Are Moving On From Trump
Donald Trump, as expected, announced on Tuesday night that he’ll run for president again in 2024, despite being twice impeached, castigated for fomenting the Jan. 6 Capitol riots, investigated for potential fraud at his family’s business and blamed for Republicans’ weak showing in last week’s midterm elections. But while the former president is counting on faithful Republicans to once again flock to him, he appears to be losing supporters — including deep-pocketed conservative donors who are instead looking for alternatives. Just this morning, Stephen A. Schwarzman of Blackstone , a longtime ally of Trump’s, told Axios that he would back someone from a “new generation” of Republicans. And the attendee list for Tuesday night’s announcement was telling: Loyalists like Roger Stone and Mike Lindell, the C.E.O. of MyPillow, were there, but few members of Congress made the trip. Mr. Trump outlined what a second term would look like. In his meandering 63-minute speech, he focused … [Read more...] about Big-Name Donors Are Moving On From Trump

Newly discovered Earth-sized planet may be ‘promising target’ to look for alien life, study says
Sign up to our free weekly IndyTech newsletter delivered straight to your inbox Sign up to our free IndyTech newsletter A new Earth-sized rocky planet discovered about 31 light years away may be a “promising target” to search for signs of extraterrestrial life , according to a new study. The research, published recently in the journal Astronomy & Astrophysics, describes a planet orbiting its home star – the red dwarf Wolf 1069 – in the habitable zone that may be conducive for liquid water to exist on the planet’s surface. Researchers, including those from the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy in Germany, say the planet is a rocky planet with an Earth-like mass that may also have an atmosphere. These features, they say, make the planet one of few “promising targets” to look for signs of life-friendly conditions as well as life signature molecules. To put the new discovery into perspective, scientists explain that only a dozen of the over … [Read more...] about Newly discovered Earth-sized planet may be ‘promising target’ to look for alien life, study says
Stargazing in December: Mars shines more brilliantly than any of the stars
I t’s bright, it’s red, and it’s high in the sky as we approach Christmas. No, I’m not talking about Rudolph’s nose as he leads Santa’s other reindeer. It’s the planet Mars , swinging by the Earth on 1 December, when it’s only 81 million kilometres away – the closest it’s been in more than two years. Throughout the month, Mars shines more brilliantly than any of the stars , with its unmistakeable reddish glow. And we are in for a rare treat in the early morning of 8 December, when the full moon moves right in front of the Red Planet. It’s surprisingly rare to observe the moon occult a planet: I’ve only seen it happen on a handful of occasions in my lifetime as an astronomer. And this occultation is highly unusual, in that it’s not just Mars, the moon and the Earth that are lined up, but the sun as well. The moon is opposite to the sun in our sky – the moment of full moon – at 4.08am on 8 December; and Mars is at opposition to the sun just 16 minutes later, at 4.24 am. … [Read more...] about Stargazing in December: Mars shines more brilliantly than any of the stars
