During the Sunday game in which the Philadelphia Eagles faced off against the Kansas City Chiefs, Mr Biden tweeted a video of first lady Jill Biden supporting the Eagles, while Mr Musk also showed support for the same team in a now-deleted tweet. While the US president’s tweet garnered about 29 million impressions, Mr Musk’s post got around 9 million, according to Platformer’s Zoë Schiffer and Casey Newton. Following this, the Twitter chief reportedly ordered the company’s remaining engineers to make changes to the platform to ensure his tweets got better engagement. Citing sources close to the matter, Platformer reported that Mr Musk flew to … [Read more...] about Elon Musk changes Twitter algorithm so his tweets get seen by ‘1000 times’ more people than normal, report claims

Kissinger said today that “peace is at hand” in Indochina and that a final agreement on a cease‐fire and political arrangement could be reached in one more negotiating session with the North Vietnamese “lasting not more than three or four days.” The remaining details, he said, would not halt the rapid movement toward an end to the war. “We must remember that, having … [Read more...] about NEW TALK NEEDED
Banks drag European markets lower amid Deutsche Bank woes

Europe’s biggest markets all dropped in value as uncertainty once again rippled through. It came after particular worries about Deutsche Bank caused shares to drop by more than 14% before midday on Friday and credit default swaps – which are used by Deutsche’s bondholders as insurance should it fail – soared. Shares in the company reduced their losses slightly as investors suggested another Credit Suisse scenario was not of the horizon, but sentiment remained dented. Chris Beauchamp, chief market analyst at IG, said: “It looks like the banking crisis isn’t solved. Lawmakers Tour D.C. Jail Where Jan. 6 Defendants Are Held
WASHINGTON — When Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, Republican of Georgia, arranged a tour of the D.C. jail to inspect the conditions of defendants charged in the Jan. 6 Capitol riot, Democrats faced a choice: Boycott or participate. House Democrats had watched last Congress as the Republican leader Kevin McCarthy pulled his members from a Democratic-led select committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, attack, and then found themselves without a voice in the nationally televised hearings. After debating the matter internally, the Democrats were determined not to make that same mistake. So, after a roughly two-hour tour of the jail Friday, when Ms. Greene finished her remarks to news reporters gathered outside, Representative Jasmine Crockett, Democrat of Texas, stepped up to the microphones. “Somebody’s got to be here to tell the truth,” said Ms. Crockett, a first-term member of Congress and a former public defender. “If we weren’t here, there would be no check for whatever … [Read more...] about Lawmakers Tour D.C. EV Fail: Rivian Electric Truck Owner’s ‘Honeymoon Phase’ Ends When It Gets Stuck in Snow
The owner of a Rivian R1S electric SUV was overjoyed to have his dream electric vehicle after waiting for years. But after owning the car for just days, it got stuck in the snow and immobilized by a safety feature, leading to a $2,100 bill to transport it to a repair facility. Business Insider reports that a recent incident involving an owner of a Rivian R1S has forced the maker of the electric vehicles to examine its customer service more carefully and think about making changes to improve the user experience. The owner of an R1S truck, Chase Merrill, encountered a difficult situation when his electric SUV got stuck in deep snow and a safety feature rendered it immobile. George W. Bush said tonight that he was arrested for driving while intoxicated 24 years ago while visiting his family's vacation home in Kennebunkport, Me. After a boisterous rally here, Mr. Bush hastily arranged his first news conference in about a month to confirm reports by WCSH-TV and WPXT-TV in Portland, Me., about his arrest. ''I'm not proud of that,'' Mr. Bush said, clutching the hand of his wife, Laura, as he faced reporters in a driveway. ''I've oftentimes said that years ago I made some mistakes. I drank too much, and I did on that night.'' He said that he had been driving, that he had admitted to a police officer who pulled him over that he had been drinking and that he had paid a fine. ''I regret that it happened,'' he said. ''But it did. I've … [Read more...] about THE 2000 CAMPAIGN: A DRIVING OFFENSE; Bush Acknowledges an Arrest for Drunken Driving in 1976
Foodbanks fear they will run out of supplies for hungry families as crisis bites
Nine in 10 foodbanks fear running out of supplies to hand to hungry families, a heartbreaking study revealed tonight. Seventy per cent of outlets said they were “extremely” or “very concerned” about their “ability to continue to support” those in need amid the cost-of-living crisis. Another 23% who responded to the SurveyMonkey study for the BanktheFood network were “somewhat concerned”. Some 97% of foodbanks which answered the poll reported surges in demand over the past 12 months as the living standards disaster crisis gripped Britain. “It’s a good investment”: Young couple buys and renovates old laundromat
One couple's journey to renovate a tired laundromat has captured viral attention as they finally opened their new and improved community hub. Erin Carpenter, 30, and her husband Jonathan, 33, have been renovating properties for years, and while on the hunt for their next project stumbled on a laundromat in their hometown of Charleston, South Carolina. "A laundromat was never really on my radar personally, but Jon is a very smart entrepreneur and businessman, he's always been interested in the concept of a laundromat," Carpenter told Newsweek . Married in June 2020, the couple had their own experience of using laundromats during their 4-month honeymoon living on the road in an RV: "We worked remotely, so we sometimes needed to work from laundromats. We took so many photos of them," said Carpenter. "They were places we spent a lot of time and there aren't a lot that are cozy and comfortable." In July 2022, the couple purchased the building in Charleston which had been a … [Read more...] about “It’s a good investment”: Young couple buys and renovates old laundromat
Russian charged with “badmouthing” military after private call wire-tapped
A Moscow police officer could face a lengthy prison term after the wiretapping of his phone revealed that he had criticized the Kremlin's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Sergei Vedel, who was originally from Bucha, Ukraine, the scene of alleged Russian atrocities last year, had made disparaging comments about the war in conversations with his relatives, according to an indictment that was reported on the Telegram channel of opposition politician Ilya Yashin. He had worked as a driver for one of the chiefs of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. A month before the start of the war, his phone was wiretapped, which Yashin said could have been as part of an investigation into his boss or because of his Ukrainian origins. It was discovered that during his phone conversations with friends last March, Vedel denied that Ukraine was run by Nazis, a stance that was one of the Kremlin's justifications for its war. He also said that one of the reasons for the war was a bid by Moscow to … [Read more...] about Russian charged with “badmouthing” military after private call wire-tapped
Donald Trump, and the Sordid Tradition of Suppressing October Surprises
Secretive talks in the waning days of a campaign. Furtive phone calls. Ardent public denials. American history is full of October surprises — late revelations, sometimes engineered by an opponent, that shock the trajectory of a presidential election and that candidates dread. In 1880, a forged letter ostensibly written by James A. Garfield claimed he wanted more immigration from China, a position so unpopular it nearly cost him the election. Weeks before the 1940 election, Franklin D. Roosevelt’s press secretary kneed a Black police officer in the groin, just as the president was trying to woo skeptical Black voters. (Roosevelt’s response made history: He appointed the first Black general and created the Tuskegee Airmen.) But the scandal that has ensnared Donald J. Trump, the paying of hush money to a pornographic film star in 2016 , is in a rare class: an attempt not to bring to light an election-altering event, but to suppress one. The payoff to Stormy Daniels that has a … [Read more...] about Donald Trump, and the Sordid Tradition of Suppressing October Surprises
