Nervous beginnings My path to Switzerland began with me making an online profile on a site dedicated to connecting au pairs with families looking for them –Great Au Pair (though since coming to Switzerland I have discovered most other people made profiles on a site called Au Pair World). Too terrified to make the first move and contact a family, I just left my profile there on the site. Then a family from Switzerland messaged me, a contract was sent by them to England and signed by me, and suddenly I was set to depart for a country I knew little of beyond neutrality, chocolate and fondue. But what is it really like being an au pair in Switzerland? When we think of skiing, often the only thing we can picture is the bright white mountain peaks, crisp air and exhilarating feeling of carving our way down the slopes. But, in reality, our favourite winter holiday is a lot less clean than we think. As we generally become more aware of our impact on the environment, more news stories have broken of the significant pollution experienced by some of the most popular ski resorts. A few years ago, it was reported that the air quality in Chamonix had become so poor that it was as bad as that of London. In fact, several of the resorts along the French Alps – Megeve and Saint Gervais to name but two – have seen a huge decline in the air quality over recent years. It looks like Saturday November 17th is a day to stay off the roads in France if you possibly can as the so-called "yellow vest" protesters aim to demonstrate their anger over rising fuel cost and taxes by blockading roads, bringing traffic all over the country to a standstill. The protests have come to symbolise a division between France's governing elite in Paris, namely French President Emmanuel Macron, and the country's rural poor who are the hit hardest by increased prices as they rely heavily on cars to get around. In a video that went viral a hypnotherapist from Brittany Jacline Mouraud said: "In a democracy, we are the bosses and they [the politicians] are the employees, they should not forget it ".
