As many as 39 Automatic Weather Stations (AWS), a meteorological station at which observations are made and transmitted automatically, have been set up in the State by the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) ahead of the monsoon, which is expected to set in over by May 27. Already 30 AWSs are functional in the State providing data on weather parameters such as temperature, rainfall, wind, and atmospheric pressure every 15 minutes. With this, 69 AWSs would be operational in addition to the 70 manual rain gauges which are enough for monitoring the weather parameters of a region as per the standard prescribed by the Bureau of Indian Standard (BIS), according to a senior IMD officer. Pre-monsoon rain continues to lash State
Even as the southwest monsoon is slowly advancing into more parts of South Bay of Bengal, which is expected to reach the State by May 27, life in central and northern Kerala was affected on Wednesday as the pre-monsoon became vigorous. For the second consecutive week, heavy rain lashed the State. Cheruthazham in Kannur recorded extreme rainfall of 25 cm during the last 24 hours ended at 8.30 am on Wednesday followed by Mahe 16 cm, Thalassery 13 cm, Kannur 12 cm; Kozhikode 12 cm, Vadakara 10 cm and Vaikom 9 cm. Hunsur faces brunt of rain fury
Several houses in Hunsur town were inundated on Tuesday night as unabated rain has been lashing Mysuru district for the last few days. The low-lying areas of the town were the worst affected and Manjunathpura layout saw water overflowing from storm-water drains and inundating houses. People living in ward numbers 22 and 23 of the town went through sleepless night as they had to flush out water which was gushing into their compounds. There was no respite from rain on Wednesday as parts of the town and the region continued to receive intermittent showers. Parts of roads were washed away and the local Fire Services personnel were engaged throughout the day in the rescue mission. Agricultural tracts surrounding the town were inundated. Micro-level disaster management initiated
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has tasked emergency services, the police, local self-governments and revenue officials to prepare micro-level disaster management plans to mitigate the threat of landslips, mudslides, tidal surges, rough seas, flooding and waterlogging usual during the southwest monsoon. Reviewing the State's monsoon preparedness, Mr. Vijayan said agencies should work in tandem to evacuate people living in disaster zones in advance. The district administration should house them in well-appointed relief camps with sufficient and clean toilet facilities. The administration should ensure that campers have access to hot and nutritious food, potable water and security. Inclement weather has stalled harvesting, procurement of paddy Intermittent heavy showers and rough sea battered parts of Alappuzha on Wednesday. Waterlogging has been reported from several low-lying areas in the district. People living in coastal areas are on the edge after being hit by high tidal waves. Officials said they were keeping a close tab on the situation. "As of Wednesday evening, no relief camp was opened in the district. We have already identified buildings, and camps will be opened if the situation arises," said an official. The inclement weather prevailing for the past few days has stalled the harvesting and procurement of paddy at Edathua, Thalavady, Thakazhi, Mannar, among other places. Unseasonal rain revives tourist flow to Jalagamparai falls in Tirupattur
Unseasonal rain has revived the flow of tourists to Jalagamparai falls near Vaniyambadi in Tirupattur as the district has been receiving continuous rainfall since early this month. Located in Nagalathu reserve forest (RF), the falls, maintained by the Forest Department, is located around four km from the foot of the Yelagiri Hills. As a result, tourists make a halt at the falls before heading towards the hills. A pathway with steel handrailings has been provided for visitors to take shower for a nominal fee to maintain the facility, especially the restrooms and changing rooms that are available there. “During summer, the falls used to be dry but this year it is different.
