BRUSSELS (AP) — The European Union’s executive arm moved Wednesday to jump-start plans for the 27-nation bloc to abandon Russian energy amid the Kremlin’s war in Ukraine, proposing a nearly 300 billion-euro ($315 billion) package that includes more efficient use of fuels and faster rollout of renewable power. The European Commission’s investment initiative is meant to help the 27 EU countries start weaning themselves off Russian fossil fuels this year. The goal is to deprive Russia, the EU’s main supplier of oil, natural gas and coal, of tens of billions in revenue and strengthen EU climate policies. “We are taking our ambition to yet another level to make sure that we become independent from Russian fossil fuels as quickly as possible,” European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said in Brussels when announcing the package, dubbed REPowerEU. With no end in sight to Russia’s war in Ukraine and European energy security shaken, the EU is rushing to align its geopolitical … [Read more...] about EU rushes out $300 billion roadmap to ditch Russian energy

Giving the government control over interest rates would be a disaster
After inflation hit a 40-year high of 9 per cent today, Conservative MPs, including some ministers, are again pointing the finger of blame at the Bank of England and its governor Andrew Bailey for raising interest rates too slowly. Worryingly, some senior Tories are even raising the question of whether the Bank should lose its operational independence on monetary policy, threatening the 25-year consensus since Gordon Brown ceded the politicians’ control of interest rates to the Bank. Liam Fox, the former cabinet minister, argues the Bank should stick to its “day job” of hitting the government’s 2 per cent inflation target, rather than worrying about political matters such as climate change (though Rishi Sunak added that to the Bank’s mandate last year). Fox said : “There is a distinct feeling that those who should be protecting us from the debasement of our currency, the erosion of our earnings and the devaluation of our savings, have had their minds too much … [Read more...] about Giving the government control over interest rates would be a disaster
One million COVID-19 deaths is a searing indictment of inequality in America | Opinion
The U.S. has now reached the once unthinkable toll of 1 million deaths from COVID-19 . How could this happen in the wealthiest country in the world? In a word, because of poverty—and the policy choices that perpetuate it. Our task now is to make different choices. Americans across the country have suffered during this pandemic. But new research by the Poor People's Campaign strongly suggests the poor and low-income have suffered the most. Even controlling for vaccination rates, they found that COVID-19 death rates in poorer U.S. counties were nearly double those in wealthier counties. During the deadliest phases of the pandemic, it rose to five times as many. White Americans still make up the largest share of America's poor and those who've died from COVID-19. But Black, Hispanic and Indigenous Americans are significantly overrepresented in America's poorest counties, and COVID-19 casualty rates run significantly higher for many communities of color. Poor Americans are … [Read more...] about One million COVID-19 deaths is a searing indictment of inequality in America | Opinion
Tucker Carlson, fierce NATO critic, to speak at ‘CPAC Hungary’ with Orbán
Fox News' Tucker Carlson is set to speak in a video address this week at CPAC Hungary 2022 (Conservative Political Action Conference) alongside Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. CPAC Hungary 2022, the first such conference to be held in Europe, will be hosted by the Center for Fundamental Rights and the American Conservative Union (ACU) on May 19 and 20 in Budapest. As the war between Ukraine and Russia rages on and Finland and Sweden have submitted their NATO applications, it is expected that speakers will reflect on the future of Europe and NATO as well as on conservative issues. Orbán, who is a long-time supporter of Putin and did choose to side with other EU countries in imposing some sanctions on Moscow following the invasion of Ukraine, is to be the keynote speaker at the event. "We know that we are facing serious challenges. CPAC Hungary is looking for the answer to how we can protect Western civilization, true Western values, how we can resist the attacks of … [Read more...] about Tucker Carlson, fierce NATO critic, to speak at ‘CPAC Hungary’ with Orbán
Prince William and Kate Middleton false break-up story spreads
Prince William and Kate Middleton have been hit by a fake break-up rumor picked up and spread by MSN.com. There is nothing to suggest the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are experiencing marital problems and they appeared happy together during a visit to Scotland on May 11. However, an article on French-language website Oh My Mag wrongly suggested Kate had walked out with the couple's three children, the website's publisher told Newsweek . MSN.com then ran a translation hosted on its own website, while a link to the story was posted to its 227,600 Twitter followers on May 17. Outlandish conspiracies about the British royal family appear in the world's media from time to time but what is notable about this example is the role MSN.com played in giving the story the potential to reach a mass audience in Britain and America. A spokesperson for Groupe Cerise, which owns Oh My Mag , told Newsweek : "This story is indeed false and has been published by accident. We are … [Read more...] about Prince William and Kate Middleton false break-up story spreads
Safe and Secure Transportation Systems
Cybersecurity executives in the automotive sector must embrace new organizational and product security standards that drive collaboration across the supply chain. Vehicle communication networks such as the controller area network (CAN) are not designed to authenticate message traffic. Now, rapid shifts in technology have introduced hyper-connectivity and automation that must be securely integrated into vehicles. Vehicles now include Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, satellite, cellular, NFC and other communication stacks that enable vehicle-to-vehicle, vehicle-to-infrastructure and personal connectivity. Hardware is integrated in support of advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) in order to automate functions and safeguard drivers. Without a holistic approach to cybersecurity across the OEMs and myriad tier suppliers, these integrations cannot happen securely. The automotive industry is now moving toward the adoption of cybersecurity standards that enable OEMs and suppliers to better understand … [Read more...] about Safe and Secure Transportation Systems

Delicate limb lengthening surgery performed in Visakhapatnam hospital
A young man, who has spent about 20 years of his life walking with difficulty due to a 2.5 cm variation between his right and left legs, is relieved now. Doctors at Apollo Hospital, Visakhapatnam, have corrected the deformity through a limb lengthening surgery. His parents, who hail from Himachal Pradesh, had settled at Rayagada in Odisha. The boy had a defect in his right leg, since birth. His parents ignored the problem, perhaps, due to fear that surgery could make even the other leg worse. The boy went through school and college and is now a techie in Pune. “The bone is fractured in controlled conditions and is elongated and allowed to heal. The bone can be elongated up to 6 cm without any complications. In this case, we needed only 2.5 cm, but the problem was the single artery going to the limb” Dr. Ravi Chandra, Paediatric orthopaedic surgeon “We performed the surgery in December 2021, and in 25 days the desired leg lengthening was achieved. The bone had healed itself in … [Read more...] about Delicate limb lengthening surgery performed in Visakhapatnam hospital
My method is a mix of Gandhi and Bhagat Singh: Soni Sori
In June last year, Madkam Hidme from Gumpad village in the dense forests of Sukma in South Chhattisgarh, was raped and killed, allegedly by security forces. She was 23. The governing authorities of Bastar celebrated Madkam’s death, calling it the killing of a hardcore Maoist. For the people of Gumpad, this compounded the tragedy. Who could they turn to for justice? They sent a message to Soni Sori, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader in Bastar. Soni quickly launched and led a sustained public campaign to secure justice for Madkam’s family. The case was taken to the Chhattisgarh High Court, which ordered the exhuming of the woman’s body for a second autopsy and, subsequently, a judicial probe. Soni did not stop there. She launched a ‘tiranga yatra’ (tricolour march) from Dantewada to Gumpad — part of the Red Corridor — and hoisted the national flag on Independence Day 2016, something even heavily armed security forces have been unable to do in the past years. How did this former … [Read more...] about My method is a mix of Gandhi and Bhagat Singh: Soni Sori
How young theatre performers are negotiating identity, social belonging
Theatresauce's upcoming play Don’t Like it Here? Then Leave, which opens at KLPac on May 19 examines the different notions of home and our places of belonging, arguably induced by two years of pandemic restrictions and lockdowns. The 80-minute play is directed by the Subang Jaya-based collective’s founder Kelvin Wong. “The play reflects the rhetoric many Malaysians grow up hearing, as if greener pastures are assumed to be found elsewhere. “It sweeps real issues and traumas under the rug by suggesting to flee rather than fight. And when one grows weary of the uphill battle and all is said and done, does it make sense to finally leave? What happens when one can’t, as is the case for many Malaysian millennials and Gen-Zs?” says Wong, 36. Don’t Like it Here? Then Leave, presented in collaboration with KLPac, features Chrystal Foo, Adam Hamizan, Ashvinder Kaur, Murasaki Haru, Timothy Leong, and Visshnu Varman. Chinese theatre veteran Amelia Tan designs the lighting while … [Read more...] about How young theatre performers are negotiating identity, social belonging
