Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene compared the billions of dollars that Congress is rushing to send to Ukraine for humanitarian and military aid to a "money laundering scheme," saying that nonprofits are being funded by the "friends and families" of U.S. elected officials. Speaking Monday on a podcast about the $40 billion package making its way through Congress, the Georgia Republican said that federal lawmakers "fund nonprofits, they fund NGOs, they fund grants, grants that go to people, and if you really look into it, a lot of times it's their friends and families that operate these nonprofits and NGOs, and it's basically like money laundering schemes." Greene is among the 57 House Republicans who have voted twice against sending aid fundi ng to Ukraine during its war with Russia. Both rounds of relief passed overwhelmingly in the House in 368-57 votes, and the Senate is preparing to take up its vote on the second package this week. McDonald’s is getting rid of front counters in huge change for how customers order
McDonald’s is getting rid of traditional staffed counters at hundreds of its UK restaurants as part of a huge shake-up of how customers order their food. The fast food chain will refurbish 200 restaurants this year as part of a £250million Convenience of the Future upgrade programme. The new design will be applied to 800 branches in total over the next four years. McDonald’s has around 1,200 restaurants in the UK. Three restaurants have already been upgraded in Bow, east London, Peckham, south London and Kirkby, Merseyside. Maccies says the refurbs are a result of 50% of people now ordering from touch screens in stores, or through its free app. Instead of having a counter specifically for orders, McDonald’s will have "specific areas for different sales channels" and a large collection window. What do you think about the McDonald's changes? Turkey becomes haven for superyachts owned by sanctioned Russian oligarchs
At least five superyachts owned by Russian oligarchs have docked in Turkey since the start of the war in Ukraine, marking an attempt by the nation's ultra-rich to avoid Western sanctions. For months, Russian oligarchs have scrambled to relocate their assets , including luxury yachts and private jets, to avoid having them seized by the United States and European countries. Turkey has since become a safe haven, as the nation has yet to impose its own sanctions against Moscow for its ongoing invasion. The latest superyacht, a $400 million luxury vessel dubbed the Flying Fox, arrived in Bodrum, Turkey, on Sunday morning, according to Insider. That ship is owned by Dmitry Kamenshchik, chairman of Moscow's Domodedovo airport. Other yachts that have sailed to Turkey belong to former KGB agent Vladimir Strzhalkovsky, steel mogul Alexander Abramov, and billionaire Roman Abramovich. As Newsweek previously reported, Abramovich sent a $600 million yacht named Solaris to Bodrum on … [Read more...] about Turkey becomes haven for superyachts owned by sanctioned Russian oligarchs

India ratifies U.N. Convention against Corruption
India on Thursday ratified the United Nations Convention against Corruption — a politically correct move that ought to take some heat off a government battling serious corruption charges and seen as unwilling to crackdown on black money stashed away abroad. Indeed, in recent days a question often asked was why India had not ratified the Convention when asset recovery is stated explicitly as a fundamental principle of the Convention. Besides, member-countries are bound by the Convention to render mutual legal assistance towards prosecution of offenders as well in tracing, freezing, and confiscating the proceeds of corruption. The Prime Minister's explanation for the delay was that the ratification had been under active consideration since September 2010 and a Group of Ministers was deputed to oversee the process. In a statement issued before his departure for Kabul, the Prime Minister further said: “….the ratification is a reaffirmation of our government's commitment to fight … [Read more...] about India ratifies U.N. New plan to help first-time buyers get cheaper mortgages unveiled – how it works
First-time buyers could be offered cheaper mortgages if they take out an insurance policy, under new plans to help get people with small deposits on the housing ladder faster. The insurance policy would protect banks if they defaulted and would therefore allow them to offer the buyer lower mortgage rates. Michael Gove , the housing secretary, is examining the Canada-style plans to make loans more available for those without big savings,. He raised concerns that restrictive mortgage financing is shutting a generation out of owning their own homes. Gove said that by looking at how other countries have allowed more families to get loans with small deposits , he will "fix our dysfunctional housing market". Banks are less likely to lend to people with small deposits because they are considered risky and are more at risk of defaulting. Gove said that "we need to make access to finance for ownership easier" for young people, pointing out that just a quarter of those aged 25 to … [Read more...] about New plan to help first-time buyers get cheaper mortgages unveiled – how it works

Struggling with the cost of living? The Tories think it’s all your own fault
Scarcely a day seems to go by without some Tory MP making a fool of themselves by wading in and trying to be helpful to people struggling with the cost of living crisis. It’s getting to be like Wordle, a regular little tweet – you know it’s coming, even though you can’t say exactly what it will be – in this case, which particular backbencher or member of the government will come up with some outstandingly patronising piece of “advice”. Unlike Wordle, however, what the Tories say is an insult to intelligence. The latest one is somebody called Rachel Maclean, who is a junior minister in charge of safeguarding and partly responsible for that great public policy success – the Afghan refugee resettlement scheme. Her top tip for folks in poverty is to go out and get a better job , and if you can’t do that then beg your employer to let you work longer hours. In her words: “We have often heard in the past when people are facing problems with their budgets that one of the … [Read more...] about Struggling with the cost of living?
