New Delhi: Former Mumbai Police Commissioner Sanjay Pandey, arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED), has approached the Delhi High Court seeking bail in a money laundering case related to alleged illegal phone tapping and snooping of national stock exchange (NSE) employees. Besides, he has also filed a separate petition seeking quashing of the FIR lodged by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for the alleged offences of cheating, criminal breach of trust by a public servant, and cheating under the Indian Penal Code, under various provisions of the Information Technology Act, Indian Telegraph Act, and Prevention of Corruption Act. Both the petitions have been listed for hearing on August 16 before Justice Jasmeet Singh. With the road to the All India Congress Committee (AICC) headquarters blocked and heavy police outside party president Sonia Gandhi and former chief Rahul Gandhi’s house on Wednesday evening, the Congress alleged that the principal Opposition party was “under siege”. The scaling up of the security cordon and placing of multiple barricades happened soon after the Enforcement Directorate (ED) temporarily sealed the premises of Young Indian (YI) in the Congress-owned National Herald office in Delhi as part of an ongoing money laundering investigation. Kerala Governor Arif Mohammed Khan was right when he objected to the State Government’s move to reissue 11 ordinances, since the Government was trying to introduce ‘ordinance raj’, rather than get the executive order ratified by the Assembly, Union Minister of State for External Affairs V. Muraleedharan said here on Friday. These ordinances ought to have ideally been passed in the previous Assembly session. The Governor can take a stand on such issues, he being the gatekeeper of the Constitution, since the Government was trying to violate Constitutonal norms. Mining Lease Row: SC to Hear on Aug 17 Pleas of Soren, J’khand Against Court Order for Probe
The Supreme Court on Friday said it will hear on August 17 the separate pleas of the Jharkhand government and Chief Minister Hemant Soren against an order of the high court which accepted the maintainability of a PIL for a probe against the JMM leader who has been accused of granting himself a mining lease as the state’s mining minister. The matter came up for hearing before a bench of Justices U U Lalit and S R Bhat. Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for the Jharkhand government, told the bench it is a “motivated” public interest litigation (PIL) which needs to be “thrown out”. The apex court said a copy of the petition along with annexures and the pleadings exchanged by the parties be placed on record.
