Children ‘disappointed’ after discovering reality of what ‘end of a rainbow’ looks like

March 25, 2023 by www.mirror.co.uk

It's always remained a mystery on what actually lies at the end of a rainbow . According to the old folktale, several people assume that there lies a pot of gold at the end to leave the finder extremely wealthy. The mystery has carried on throughout generations and has left children and adults alike anticipating the day they strike gold with their findings. However, one mum has admitted that her child was left extremely 'disappointed' when they stumbled across the phenomenon. Taking to popular Facebook group Family Lockdown Tips and Ideas - which boasts more than 1.2 members - Kiera Cantwell shared images finally proving what the end of a rainbow really looks like. An old folktale suggests that gold lies at the end of the rainbow (stock photo) ( Image: Getty Images/iStockphoto) Alongside a series of photos, mum Kiera explained: "Both my boys were so excited this afternoon to see a double rainbow and they spotted 'the end of a rainbow'. "Hopefully means some … [Read more...] about Children ‘disappointed’ after discovering reality of what ‘end of a rainbow’ looks like

‘Restless Giant’: The Rich and the Rest

November 6, 2005 by www.nytimes.com

RESTLESS GIANT The United States From Watergate to Bush v. Gore. By James T. Patterson. Illustrated. 448 pp. Oxford University Press. $35. THIS is first-rate history by a first-rate historian. Unlike many of his brethren, James T. Patterson can write, and he understands the value of vivid detail, using "Annie Hall," "Norma Rae" and "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" to help explain the women's movement. What's more, he can think, and he offers analysis and interpretation that is consistently sensible, if sometimes a trifle Panglossian. The events he describes make up the history -- social, economic and political -- of the United States during the final quarter of the 20th century, from Richard Nixon's departure from the White House and America's departure from Vietnam to the bitter partisanship of Bill Clinton's impeachment and Bush v. Gore. In between, he recalls the Ford and Carter administrations and the Iranian hostage crisis, the rise of Ronald Reagan and the resurgence of … [Read more...] about ‘Restless Giant’: The Rich and the Rest

Another One for the Gipper

September 2, 2009 by www.nytimes.com

We’ll know it’s safe to call Barack Obama’s presidency a success if 25 years from now the most interesting arguments about the Obama legacy are happening among his ideological opponents. That’s the way it’s been with Ronald Reagan lately: while Republicans take their fealty to Reaganism for granted, American liberals have been engaged in a low-grade civil war about how their greatest foe ought to be remembered. On one side you have the stalwart Reagan haters, for whom the 40th president will always be an overrated dunce who rode racism and jingoism to power and left behind a legacy of greed, polarization and fiscal irresponsibility. On the other you have those journalists and academics — Richard Reeves, John Patrick Diggins, Sean Wilentz, for example — who have sought ways to recognize Reagan as a consequential president, and possibly even a great one, without ceding too much ideological ground to his conservatism. (The debate even found its way into the 2008 Democratic primaries, … [Read more...] about Another One for the Gipper

Do You Live in a ‘Tight’ State or a ‘Loose’ One? Turns Out It Matters Quite a Bit.

March 29, 2023 by www.nytimes.com

Political biases are omnipresent, but what we don’t fully understand yet is how they come about in the first place. In 2014, Michele J. Gelfand , a professor of psychology at the Stanford Graduate School of Business formerly at the University of Maryland, and Jesse R. Harrington , then a PhD. candidate , conducted a study designed to rank the 50 states on a scale of “tightness” and “looseness.” Appropriately titled “ Tightness-Looseness Across the 50 United States ,” the study calculated a catalog of measures for each state, including the incidence of natural disasters, disease prevalence, residents’ levels of openness and conscientiousness, drug and alcohol use, homelessness and incarceration rates. Gelfand and Harrington predicted that “‘tight’ states would exhibit a higher incidence of natural disasters, greater environmental vulnerability, fewer natural resources, greater incidence of disease and higher mortality rates, higher population density, and greater degrees … [Read more...] about Do You Live in a ‘Tight’ State or a ‘Loose’ One? Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s media battles won’t do them any “favors”

March 29, 2023 by www.newsweek.com

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle should at some point "back off" from their persistent battles with the U.K. media because they are not doing themselves "any favors," a prominent royal biographer has told a new episode of Newsweek 's The Royal Report podcast. Author of the soon-to-be-released George VI and Elizabeth: The Marriage That Shaped the Monarchy and biographer of Princess Diana , Sally Bedell Smith, told chief royal correspondent Jack Royston that Harry and Meghan have been "entwined with their own media outlets," such as Netflix and Spotify, building and maintaining relationships in much the same way the royals have been accused of doing. Since 2019, both Harry and Meghan have launched a series of lawsuits against the U.K. tabloid media, including publishing giants Associated Newspapers Limited whose titles include the Daily Mail , Mail on Sunday and MailOnline. Harry is currently in London, where he has attended hearings connected with his ongoing … [Read more...] about Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s media battles won’t do them any “favors”

Female Mexican drug Cartel assassins fight in new organised crime ‘phenomenon’

March 27, 2023 by www.mirror.co.uk

Female gangsters are the newest organised crime "phenomenon" gripping Mexico as women assassins are completing hits for drug cartels . Officials in the northern Mexican state of Zacatecas have noticed more and more women becoming embroiled in the shady world of Mexican drug gangs. Footage broadcast by Milenio TV shows a unit of balaclava-clad women draped in tactical military uniforms sporting assault rifles as they move with convoys of male cartel members. The reporter claimed "this is a phenomenon that had not been recorded before". "These women have been captured on film in their role as assassins and leaders of these groups," he added. Two female assassins were seen guarding a convoy that stole a batch of motorbikes in Loreto, Mexico ( Image: Supplied) In Loreto, residents filmed two female gangsters thieving motorbikes and stood guard for another cartel burglar on Monday.
