Weather News Updates: Incessant rains in Karnataka have caused waterlogging in various parts of Bengaluru. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has sounded orange and red alerts (heavy to very heavy rainfall) in all districts of coastal Karnataka on Wednesday and Thursday. Two labourers were found dead at the Kaveri Pipeline work site in Bengaluru after heavy rains last night. As floodwaters entered fresh areas of Assam, the number of affected people has doubled to over four lakh since the previous day, while three more persons died due to the calamity taking the toll to eight, a government bulletin said on Tuesday. Landslides triggered by incessant rain snapped rail and road links to Barak Valley and Dima Hasao district of Assam and neighbouring states of Tripura, Mizoram and Manipur. HYDERABAD: Researchers from Hyderabad have 3D-printed an artificial cornea and transplanted it into a rabbit’s eye. A team of clinicians and scientists from the LV Prasad Eye Institute (LVPEI), Hyderabad, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Hyderabad, and Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB), have collaborated to develop the 3D-printed cornea from the human donor corneal tissue which would have otherwise been discarded for not meeting optical standards for clinical transportation. The printed corneas need to undergo further clinical testing and development before they can be used in patients, which could take several years. The team is hopeful of a positive outcome. Funding sources While corneal substitutes are being actively researched throughout the world, they are either animal-based or synthetic. Odisha is bracing for a possible flood-like situation in several districts, with the water level of the Mahanadi river swiftly rising following heavy rain in the catchment areas over the last few days, officials said. As part of efforts to deal with the circumstances, the state government has closed eight more gates in the Hirakud reservoir, they said. Torrential rain in the upper and lower catchment areas has led to the rise in water levels in all tributaries of the Mahanadi, the officials said. Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) P K Jena said more water is entering the Hirakud reservoir due to heavy rainfall in the upper catchment areas in Chhattisgarh. The situation has deteriorated with the Tel river discharging over three lakh cusecs into the Mahanadi river instead of the expected 1.5 lakh cusecs, he said.
