WASHINGTON — The goal of a diplomatic meeting set for Thursday seemed simple: Nail down a plan for a second summit between President Trump and the North Korean leader, Kim Jong-un. But finalizing the meeting itself — between Mike Pompeo, the secretary of state, and one of Mr. Kim’s top compatriots — proved harder than expected. The State Department announced early Wednesday that it had been canceled. “Ongoing conversations continue to take place,” the statement said tersely. The cancellation leaves little doubt that the diplomatic process between the United States and North Korea is now mired in quicksand after peaking in Singapore with the initial summit between the two leaders. There are mismatched demands and expectations on both sides, and the pitfalls have only gotten more obvious in recent weeks. At the White House later Wednesday, Mr. Trump said the meeting would be rescheduled and insisted that “we’re very happy with how it’s going with North Korea.” “We’re in … [Read more...] about Diplomacy Appears Stalled With North Korea, Despite Trump’s Declarations

They always had Mike Pence . Deeply religious, strait-laced and unfailingly loyal, the vice president was supposed to be an insurance policy for the social conservatives and evangelical Christians who found President Trump too crude, domineering and politically unreliable. But Mr. Trump’s hospitalization for complications from Covid-19 raised an unsettling question about Mr. Pence, and more broadly about the future of the party, for Republicans who have grown used to the alpha, tweet-first, consider-precedent-later leadership of the president. In recent days, no Republican, including Mr. Pence, was able to fill the giant void left by the president’s brief disappearance from the public eye. Mr. Pence remained largely out of sight as Mr. Trump refused to delegate his powers, denying the man next in line to the presidency a moment to shine. Ahead of the vice-presidential debate on Wednesday evening, the highest-stakes event Mr. Pence has faced in a political career he does … [Read more...] about Mike Pence Brought Conservatives Home. Former Vice President Mike Pence said Monday that former President Donald Trump should “apologize” for hosting white nationalist Nick Fuentes and Kanye “Ye” West at Mar-a-Lago. NewsNation host Leland Vittert questioned Pence on whether hosting a dinner with West and Fuentes, a Holocaust denier and labeled a white supremacist by the Department of Justice (DOJ), would disqualify from him running for re-election in 2024. West came under fire for anti-semitism after stating that he was “going death [sic] con” on Jewish people in an Oct. 9 tweet. “Of course there is Leland and let me say this, anti-semitism is a real issue in the world today and there’s a rising tide of anti-semitism in many countries around the world,” Pence said. “When I was in Congress I co-founded the anti-semitism caucus as I write about in the book with the only Holocaust survivor ever to serve in Congress, a Democrat, the late Tom Lantos and as I said in another forum in Chicago earlier today, President Trump … [Read more...] about Mike Pence Calls On Trump To ‘Apologize’ For Dinner With Nick Fuentes And Ye
[Follow our live vice presidential debate updates between Harris and Pence .] There usually isn’t much drama about the seating arrangements at vice-presidential debates . But what would 2020 be without a little back-and-forth over how much of the same air is shared by Vice President Mike Pence and Senator Kamala Harris of California? This week, as the scope of the White House coronavirus outbreak became clear — with positive tests now for President Trump , Melania Trump and at least eight aides , along with his campaign manager, the Republican National Committee chairwoman and three Republican senators — Mr. Pence’s aides have publicly mocked Ms. Harris for seeking protection from the air breathed out by the vice president during Wednesday’s debate at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City. The Commission on Presidential Debates will allow Ms. Harris and the debate’s moderator, Susan Page, the Washington bureau chief for USA Today, to surround themselves with … [Read more...] about What Are the Rules for Tonight’s Debate? Vice President Mike Pence and Senator Kamala Harris sat a dozen feet apart on Wednesday, separated by plexiglass and an ideological chasm, for a 90-minute debate that for all the hype seems unlikely to affect the trajectory of presidential campaign . Ms. Harris wanted to talk about President Trump. Mr. Pence wanted to talk about Joseph R. Biden Jr. And neither had much interest in answering any of the questions posed by the moderator — or by the other candidate — leading to a mostly staid series of two-minute set pieces. It was civil. It was conventional. It was not especially scintillating or revealing. But that was still a vast improvement over the unruly shout-out that Americans suffered through last week in the first presidential debate. It even felt normal — minus the plexiglass plates erected onstage — as neither candidate focused on the most compelling news development in the nation: Mr. Trump’s contracting of the coronavirus, his hospitalization and return to the … [Read more...] about Six Takeaways From the Vice-Presidential Debate

U.S. Coronavirus Pandemics Donald Trump U.S. military Even as President Trump says he tested negative for coronavirus, the COVID-19 pandemic raises the fear that huge swaths of the executive branch or even Congress and the Supreme Court could also be disabled, forcing the implementation of "continuity of government" plans that include evacuating Washington and "devolving" leadership to second-tier officials in remote and quarantined locations. But Coronavirus is also new territory, where the military itself is vulnerable and the disaster scenarios being contemplated -- including the possibility of widespread domestic violence as a result of food shortages -- are forcing planners to look at what are called "extraordinary circumstances". Above-Top Secret contingency plans already exist for what the military is supposed to do if all the Constitutional successors are incapacitated. Standby orders were issued more than three weeks ago to ready these plans, not just … [Read more...] about Exclusive: Inside the Military’s Secret Plans If Coronavirus Cripples D.C.
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 3 OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Railroad unions on Tuesday decried President Joe Biden's call for Congress to intervene in their contract dispute, saying it undercuts their efforts to address workers' quality of life concerns, but businesses stressed that it is crucial to avoid a strike next week that would devastate the economy. Biden and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said that lawmakers will be asked to vote Wednesday to impose the terms of the deals the 12 unions agreed to before an original strike deadline in September, even though four of those unions representing more than half of the 115,000 rail workers rejected them. Eight other unions ratified the five-year deals that include 24% raises and $5,000 in bonuses. Biden said he reluctantly agreed that it would be best to override the union votes because the potential damage to the economy would be too great. “Congress I think has to act to … [Read more...] about Railroad unions decry Biden’s plan to block possible strike
