DeSantis “in no rush” but Pence “strong” for 2024—Trump’s ex-campaign chief

August 8, 2022 by www.newsweek.com

Donald Trump 's former campaign manager recently said that he believes Florida Governor Ron DeSantis should hold off trying to become president until after 2024 while former Vice President Mike Pence would be considered a "strong" candidate should he choose to run. Paul Manafort, a key part of Trump's 2016 team who was jailed for tax and bank fraud charges , told Newsweek that while he considers both DeSantis and Pence potential future GOP candidates, neither of them would beat the former president should he choose to run in in 2024 as expected. "DeSantis is in no rush," Manafort said. "He's gonna get reelected, he's been doing a tremendous job as governor of Florida. His second term will end in 2026, and—if Trump is elected [in 2024]—he will have an open seat in 2028. "Pence has his own base he can build from and he's a strong candidate in many respects," Manafort added. "I don't know if he'd run against Trump. He would also be a prospective candidate for 2028. They're … [Read more...] about DeSantis “in no rush” but Pence “strong” for 2024—Trump’s ex-campaign chief

Trump beats Pence in Arizona as Kari Lake wins primary

August 5, 2022 by www.newsweek.com

Kari Lake, endorsed by former President Donald Trump , won Arizona's Republican gubernatorial primary on Thursday, dealing a blow to Vice President Mike Pence , who backed her opponent Karrin Taylor Robson. The primary in the battleground Sun Belt state became a proxy battle between Trump and Pence . Though Pence once served as Trump's second-in-command, their relations soured following the January 6, 2021, attack at the U.S. Capitol, when a mob of Trump supporters rioted in a failed attempt to force Congress to block the 2020 presidential election results based on unfounded claims of voter fraud. At the time, Trump urged Pence to join his efforts to overturn the presidential election results, but Pence refused to do so. The results and legitimacy of the election have become a divisive issue in the Republican Party—even though there is no substantial evidence that the election was stolen—as Trump attempts to hold his grip on power in the GOP. The issue became central to … [Read more...] about Trump beats Pence in Arizona as Kari Lake wins primary

General warned Trump’s actions could get admin tried as war criminals: Book

August 8, 2022 by www.newsweek.com

General Mark Milley once warned former President Donald Trump 's advisers that they could be tried for war crimes during a heated discussion about military activity against Iran, according to a new book. Trump appointed Milley to serve as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in December 2018, but multiple disagreements throughout his tenure quickly strained their relationship, according to an excerpt published in The New Yorker on Monday from the book, The Divider: Trump in the White House, 2017-2021 , by Susan B. Glasser and Peter Baker. The excerpt outlined the tense relationship between Trump and his generals , who often found themselves at odds with the ex-president over what they viewed as misuses of the military. These concerns included his plans to send the military in to stop protests in the summer of 2020 following the police murder of George Floyd , and concerns he would start unnecessary wars. After months of frustration, Milley eventually viewed his role … [Read more...] about General warned Trump’s actions could get admin tried as war criminals: Book

Patrick Leahy as the chamber's longest-serving member retires. In Minnesota, U.S. Rep. Dems look ahead to Barnes in fall race against Ron Johnson

August 7, 2022 by www.sfgate.com

This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 6 MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Lt. Gov. Mandela Barnes grew up in Milwaukee with a mom who was a public school teacher and a father who worked in a factory — both union members, an important credential in a state where the labor movement is still a force. At 35, Barnes is nearly half the age of the average U.S. senator, and would join a tiny group of Black senators — and be the first from Wisconsin — if he wins election to the chamber. That biography stands to turn Barnes into one of the most prominent Democrats in the U.S. this year as the party aims to defeat one of its top targets: Republican Sen. Ron Johnson. His ouster is such a priority that Barnes’ top Democratic rivals dropped out of the primary in recent weeks to rally around him, leaving Tuesday’s primary as mostly a formality ahead of what’s certain to be a brutal and expensive general election campaign. “I … [Read more...] about Dems look ahead to Barnes in fall race against Ron Johnson

Eli Lilly says Indiana abortion ban will spur it to hire outside home state

August 6, 2022 by www.newsweek.com

A major pharmaceutical company based in Indiana has spoken out against the state's near-total abortion ban, which was signed into law on Friday. Eli Lilly and Company, the pharmaceutical giant known for producing drugs like Prozac and Cymbalta, was founded in 1876 in Indianapolis, where its headquarters remain to this day. On Saturday, the company released a statement pushing back against the state's draconian new abortion laws, saying that it would be "forced" to pursue more growth and employment outside of its home state. "Lilly recognizes that abortion is a divisive and deeply personal issue with no clear consensus among the citizens of Indiana," the statement read. "Despite this lack of agreement, Indiana has opted to quickly adopt one of the most restrictive anti-abortion laws in the United States. We are concerned that this law will hinder Lilly's - and Indiana's ability to attract diverse scientific, engineering, and business talent from around the world." Trump wears safety goggles but not face mask to mask-making factory despite facility’s guidelines

May 5, 2020 by www.newsweek.com

President Donald Trump and his aides failed to wear a mask during their visit to Honeywell plant in Phoenix, Arizona on Tuesday, despite the factory's policy that requires all employees wear a mask at all times. The president did, however, wear safety goggles. "Please wear your mask at all times," read multiple signs around the facility that's currently manufacturing N95 respirations for the Trump administration. A White House official later claimed that the factory had given the president and officials permission to not wear a mask during their tour. Hours before the trip, Trump told reporters that he would only wear a face mask or covering if he is required to do so by the factory. "I think it's a masked facility," the president said. "If it's a masked facility, I will. I don't know if it's a masked facility." Trump has repeatedly refused to follow federal guidelines encouraging Americans to wear masks in public amid the pandemic. Faced with backlash, the president has claimed … [Read more...] about Trump wears safety goggles but not face mask to mask-making factory despite facility’s guidelines

Trump Facing Major Criminal Investigations as He Considers 2024 Presidential Run

August 10, 2022 by english.chosun.com

August 10, 2022 08:13 As he strongly hints at another campaign for the White House in 2024, former U.S. President Donald Trump is facing major federal and state criminal investigations into his actions in the immediate aftermath of his failed reelection campaign in 2020. Monday's unprecedented FBI raid at Trump's Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida was the latest indication that investigators remain focused on the country's 45th president. Reports say the investigators were seeking classified documents he may have taken with him when he left Washington last year. The search was court-authorized and was likely sanctioned at the highest levels of the Justice Department. But details of the search warrant filed by investigators and their justification for it are not yet publicly known, nor is the name of the judge who authorized it. The White House says it was not given advance notice of the raid. Under the Presidential Records Act of 1978, the official records of all presidents and … [Read more...] about Trump Facing Major Criminal Investigations as He Considers 2024 Presidential Run

Donald Trump just had his “worst day” yet: Watergate prosecutor

August 5, 2022 by www.newsweek.com

Former President Donald Trump 's "worst day" came this week when his White House counsel Pat Cipollone was subpoenaed by federal investigators, one former Watergate prosecutor said. Nick Ackerman, who served as an assistant special Watergate prosecutor, said that Tuesday's subpoena marked "the worst day for Donald Trump." Cipollone has been ordered to testify in front of a grand jury as part of the Justice Department's investigation into the activities leading up to the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot . He has already been interviewed by the House committee investigating the attack, but Ackerman said the federal subpoena will be much more damning to Trump. "I think that the Department of Justice is going to get a lot more information from Pat Cipollone," the former prosecutor told MSNBC 's The Beat on Wednesday. "If he thought that was his worst experience—going before the committee—he is in for a major surprise when he appears before that grand jury." So far, Cipollone … [Read more...] about Donald Trump just had his “worst day” yet: Watergate prosecutor

House impeachment managers slam Trump in pre-trial brief: ‘Most grievous constitutional crime ever’

The House impeachment managers accused former President Donald Trump of "the most grievous constitutional crime ever committed by a President" in a Monday brief before Trump's Senate impeachment trial begins in earnest Tuesday. Their brief – technically a reply to the Trump team's answer to the article of impeachment – follows the submission by Trump's lawyers of their full pre-trial brief earlier Monday. The House managers in their brief most prominently counter the two main defenses that Trump's legal team has put forth – that the Senate cannot constitutionally hold an impeachment trial for a former president and that Trump's conduct was protected by the First Amendment. The impeachment managers generally fall back on arguments they made in their … [Read more...] about House impeachment managers slam Trump in pre-trial brief: ‘Most grievous constitutional crime ever’
